If there's a fan translation that was made and then literal decades went by and only afterwards someone decided to make an official release with a new translation, that translation is always bound to be worse. From pure memory bias, you're just used to the other thing.
That said, I do think mirrormoon's FSN is better because it is almost always the case that a fantranslation is better than an official one for the simple fact that there's more passion put into it

I've looked through some of them and the examples really just seem nitpicky or are making mountains out of molehills. He says the official TL doesn't get Archer's tone right but the FanTL sounds even worse because there are no connectors between clauses leading to Archer sounding like an ESL even it is more literally translated. Notice the rhythm Nasu creates by using consonance of 'k' and internal rhyme. All of that is lost in Mirror Moon's TL. The official translation at least has the half-rhyme of 'faint' and 'slant'. Everything, from syntax, to phonetics, to semantics, contributes to a 'distinct Japanese feel', yet Mirror Moon obsessively focuses on the semantic domain only, and only in the most literal sense.

The truth is, you don't actually care about capturing the feel of Japanese sentences, you only care about capturing your idea of what Japanese is like, which neither linguistically nor objectively corresponds to Nasu's actual text. Thankfully, Type Moon doesn't listen to illiterate retards on an imageboard.
