HF is just the bitter truth of growing up and I think it's a pretty obvious maturity filter for the people who dislike the route.

Sakura and Shirou finally growing up and finding happiness and family in each other is kino. Both overpowered their damage. Both Shirou and Sakura carry a bunch of trauma, and gradually heal through the love they give each other. The home they built with Taiga is their haven. By the end of HF, Shirou is at his most human due to abandoning those borrowed ideals and Sakura looks forward to living.

People often dismiss HF, but I think the progression is a natural consequence of both Shirou growing as a person and Nasu getting older. The way HF ends is how Nasu would have wanted his own life to be, and much more fitting of how Shirou has grown. You should eventually get over your edgy teenager phase.

What amazes me about the series is how it has an extremely easy and perfect setup for loads of cool stories and yet they completely fucked up it. You've got a battle royale like thing where mages summon ancient heroes as pseudo stands who are sorted into a small set of classes. Easy setup, you have all the heroes of history to draw on, you can do it in loads of settings and do loads of stuff with it. You also have the pseudo world of darkness setting of the Nasuverse which is cool in itself for it.

But then what they do is they ignore that entire setup and release pseudo sci-fi gatcha/musous where one master has 10000000x servants, no one gets developed and there's nothing like the themes of Shirou's idealism/heroism or the urban fantasy stuff ever really explored again in any meaningful way. What the fuck happened? It's such a simple setup. You could literally have just done a sequel VN with a new set of characters and the protag summoning Mordred or something if you want some kind of thematic link to FSN. Instead Mordred (and basically anyone else decently relevant) has just been cannibalized for shitty spinoffs/gacha characters. What a mess.

Rereading F/SN is reminding me how much the spinoffs just fuck up the premise, none of the characters are as indepth as the Masters in the VN.
It's just more Servants, Fuck the Urban Fantasy lets have the story have some sci-fi bullshit, the Battle Royale was never really the focus of the plot in the VN.
