Does anyone know a good website for practicing pitch accent? I'm having trouble hearing the difference between certain words
>>48057092pitch accent doesn't matter all that much imo
>>48057094Yeah, but I still would like to know the difference.
>>48057100use https://kotu.io/ until you're good enough to tell the difference and then never think about it again
>>48057105Thanks, is there anything else other than this I should be using? I remember some guy on Youtube was selling a course, but I'm not sure if that's a scam or not.
>>48057092>pitch accent :skull:
>>48057114we generally don't encourage anything related to blowgen. just don't worry about pitch accent. this isn't chinese where tones are important

>>48057158girly ka?
>>48057176>okay, whatever you say, "girly ka">don't call me girly ka!!
Currently beginning in studying by Anki, should i finish the whole Core2k/6k or i start studying Kanji and reading materials as well
>>48057215You can start doing your other materials alongside your Anki, including grammar and reading if you feel comfortable. I wouldn't go past 2000 words in the core deck, though. If you find reading too difficult, then wait until you've learned at least 1000 vocab, and then try again.
>>48057215finish the core deck firstdont bother with kanji studies
does anyone here have any experience playing retro games in japanese? i was thinking about buying the first fire emblem from ebay, but not sure how hard it would be for someone who's only around n4~n5
Can someone explain the 『回』 in 『回収』 is it like 『お茶を回して』 ?
>>48057288the meaning*
>>48057288I believe the 回 represents a revolution or return to its original owner
>>48057269retro games don't have kanji because of their low data capacity, never for readability, okay? >:3
>>48057305wouldn't that make it easier to play then? i don't really care about learning kanji. i mostly just want to pickup some vocab and play through the series slowly
>>48057304>revolution or return to its original ownerIt represents a lot more than that, that's not what 回収 implies so I doubt it. Also do you have a source for>return to its original owner漢字源 says 一度手もとから離れたものを手もとへもどすことSo perhaps it just means return in the standard sense and english glosses as usual are retarded.
damn the other thread was made 30 minutes before this one
>>48057307>wouldn't that make it easier to play then?nope, sentences with only kana make my eyes slip over (@_@;)目が滑る!
all hiragana is easyall katakana is hard
>>48057316The English gloss is correct, but the aspect of 回 is showing the idea of circulation, which is to say that something's returned or come back to its place. The 収 reinforces that idea. I don't mean that 回 literally means "return to one's owner" but just that the two logograms when combined connote that idea, though not explicitly.
>>48057333That is simply not what the word means, you are incorrect. Sorry if that offends you.
>>48057321no one likes you
回復 this ones even weirder
>>48057336Oh, I'm not offended. You're free to have your own opinion of it, but that's how I've come to understand it over the years, especially when it's used in compounds like this.
sometimes you should just learn the words without questioning them
>>48057350Like 何組?
>>48057344Then you have misunderstood something simple. "回収" and "回" do not imply that a person owned an object throughout time and should not be used as such.
>>48057352i learned that now
>>48057353I'm not sure who told you that, but 回収 can indeed imply that an object is recovered back to its owner.
wtf is the literal meaning of 伏線 tho
>>48057361That is ideed NOT the case. If you read a passage and without any context assumed that the person was the original owner then you would be misunderstanding. If you had context then the meaning does not change. Saying can imply, when talking about the meaning of a word is irrelevant and you know it, as any word could "imply" anything.
>>48057372>
>>48057372Let's agree to disagree, my friend.
>>48057384Alas, I've already marked the board
>>48057372i dont know the word for it. but its more less "imply" and more this sounds poetically nice or fits well when the original owner is recovering his thingapt, poignant, resonant. and yes i do believe this feeling comes from the fact that it is written with 回now someone explain why gang rape uses 回the only explanation i can think is the visual appearance
>>48057417more less -> less

>>48062667A lot of evil overlord characters in manga will be referred to as 魔王, and often it's translated as "demon king" or something similar. In English, depending on the game, he's called Evil King, Demon King or King of Evil depending on the specific kanji used and the whims of the translators. You should look up 魔物 (mamono) for a compare and contrast, because it's used in conjunction with monsters and has some cultural significance that might be useful to understand. The use of that kanji should also give you some insight into things like 魔法 (mahou, as in mahou shoujyo) for magic.

>>48062830Indeed. Only by retreading the path can our feet truly come to know it. I've learned and relearned some words several times because they just...never seem to pop up. Others I've seen over and over again, but they haven't truly clicked until something significant made the concept stick in my brain properly.

嗚呼 is a classical chinese exclamation "qaː qʰaː" (old chinese) or "'u xu" (middle chinese) with a meaning like "ah!" or "alas!"We translate this into Japanese as the Japanese exclamation ああFor example, from the analects:>嗚呼哀哉嗚呼(ああ)、哀(かな)しきかなAlas, how lamentable! But that is not the exclamation from classical chinese translated this wayFor example, also from the analects:>左奉食,右執飲,曰:「嗟!來食。」左に食(しょく)を奉(まつ)りて、右に飲(いん)を執(と)りて、曰(いは)く:「嗟(ああ)!来たりて食(く)らへ!」Proffering food in his left (hand) and holding drink in his right, he said "Ah! >>48068624different meanings and readings are attributed to different periods. see go-on kan-on, to-on, and kan'you-on.
>>48068424Kanji essentially don't have readings, the "readings" you see are just how words with them are commonly read, even comprehensive english dictionaries don't track them all 済す and there is no point to learn word readings and kanji meanings, which implies that rtk is correct and wanikani is a waste of time. And with furigana you can have the best of both worlds and naturally learn reading from reading. I'll try not to say any more than this, but just know that I have thought a lot about this and this is definitely the easiest and funnest way to learn to read japanese (though I've never done rtk myself). If you know the meaning of the kanji then you can go to any dictionary, look at a word you know, and refine your understanding of the kanji by looking at a word with 2 kanji that you knowFor example, compare見 see, 学 study, 一 one, 外 outside見学 一見 外見once you learn what these words mean you realize your kanji knowledge is updated and you should think more like見 (see, observe, look, appearance)Eventually you will have so many words in their that it is easier to just think 見 which you can refer to with whatever method works best for you, be it a reading a stroke order or just "the first kanji 見分け"

imo srs is very over used in language learning. If you are trying to learn a language it's for 1 of 3 major categoriesreadingwritingspeakingif you practice one of these categories until you are proficient and you find yourself always looking up the same information because you failed to recall it, then you should put that in srs, but you should never just throw random collection of garbage into srs that you either already know well enough, or don't need to know. The best time/way to learn a word is in the context you will use it, the second best time is looking it up/being told while reading/writing/speaking. The absolute worse is in a vacuum. If you are trying to learn something completely contextless like radicals readings then it's fine, but you should really question why you are trying to learn radical readings, if it's to be more well rounded after n1 then sure, if it's to look up kanji faster than lol you are probably wasting your time which is better spent on one of the 3 major categories. >>48068837>>48068876This kind of shit is another example of procrastination that people confuse for learning japanese and then wonder why they are still n5 after years. I'm n1 btw, so don't even start

>>48069004>I just got curious at the radical, nothing more. That's the point, if you can't stop from "getting curious" and constantly wasting your time then language learning becomes 10x harder. Nothing gets benefit from more near constant exercises than language comprehension, not even muscles.
