最初
hello, im getting back into learning Japanese again and i was watching a japanese LP of someone's Minecraft world with JP subtitles, I like watching cooking videos, news videos, gaming videos etc. and i want to know what are some search terms on YouTube that would help with immersion as i typically watch tons of YouTube slop daily.
>>48069258You know 実況 of course then? Just search <game you like> 実況
Just discovered this thing in some youtube video. Anyone have tried it? Is it as nice as an anki deck 2k?
>>48069638never heard of it but why do 2k when you could just mine
had two tries on this boss before he went down...i think i just got friendzoned by sarah
>>48069258>againngmi
>>48069713why be a hater
>>48069733I was jking lol he's gonna make it
>>48069711sara loves you but she knows that she can never have you which always makes me sadthis is foreshadowed when shes sad youre leaving
>>48069667I guess those words were picked because they're the ones used the most?
>>48069836but isnt it more fun if they are words you see yourself in media you enjoy
>>48069838I mostly want to play the first pokemon game in japanese but i think that's entirely hiragana. It does the same work?
手伝わせてるCan someone tell me what the わせ means specifically obvious what てる is
>>48069842if you're gonna play old pokemon games I'd play FRLG to be honest.>kanasoupmade up for it by imagining the moonrunes used. also played digimon world 3 with a cheat to make random encounters trigger only on-demand (cuts down on time wasted, especially when backtracking)>>48069898手伝わせる = make/let someone helpてる = abbreviation of ている = action in progress (in this case)making someone help
>>48069920>kanasoupWhat is that? Also guess i'll play black/white since those have kanji i guess. To see if that makes it any more quicker to learn kanjis.
>>48069842if you don't learn the words by the kanji, you'll still be unable to identify homonyms :3
>>48069194I split it into major categories cause practicing reading and hardly improve writing------------------------>listening -> readingcomprehension-<------------------------>speaking -> writingAre the relations, at least until you get to literary Japanese where it's reading -> writingBut they are all their own categories and are improved best by deliberate practice. If you put in 100 hours of writing practice then you will probably be better at writing than the version of yourself who put in 100 hours of speaking and 90 hours of writing, but probably not 95 hours of writing. You would expect most authors to be well read, and that's what you find. But there are plenty of great authors who claim to read little or not at all. This is possible because when working towards a goal and solving problem you have to understand more about what you know. You're vocabulary probably eclipses most graded readers you've read, but it would be difficult for you to write one. In the same vein, some graded readers are entertaining and well write while others are complete shit, despite using the same or more vocab. If you want to improve writing, find one of these shitty graded readers and see if you can write, something that is at least as good. But in reality nobody cares about writing, so you should just read and reread until you understand or your head goes numb, take 1 scoop, pass out, wake up repeat
>>48069972I'll note that listening -> reading is probably much stronger than 20:1 for japanese cause it's (almost) a completely phonetic script... if kanji didn't exist. In any case reading may be worthless for you if you can just use TTS or furigana for your usecase.
>>48069230I like legs.
https://youtu.be/NmTo4UDnEVYi should learn 将棋
>>48069808good game
I’m in Japan right now and I bought a shirt that’s says 酒くず Can someone explain what this means exactly? I know the kanji is sake (alcohol) and kuzu means trash. The guy at the shop told me it means “alcoholic”Can anyone verify? I’d like to gift it to a friend of mine that drinks a lot. Thanks in advance
>>48070046yes
>>48070046it means you drown yourself in alcohol without a single regret
>>48070046according to this article https://bunkaonline.jp/archives/2263 the nuance is that its used as an edgy term among youth to brag about how much they love getting hammered

Here is a simplified diagram of the mind of someone fluent in English who is beginning to learn (language) and studying using flashcards with word pairs:Red arrows indicate the main path of information from flashcards. Maybe you can see the reason I don't consider flashcards an optimal approach to learning languages. That approach can load word associations into a vector lookup system, but what's needed is encoder/decoder training. For that to happen with flashcards, the best-case scenario is training across the entire chain of two encoders to increase similarity at the concept latent space, and flashcards are inefficient for that because they provide a small amount of data without context. Anyone who understands neural networks knows that large amounts of in-context real data is better than repeatedly using small numbers of small fragments. So, instead of using flashcards, I think it's better to read pairs of complete paragraphs with the same meaning, without repetition. For example, reading a book together with its translation. The foreign text not being understood as it's read doesn't mean that reading it is ineffective as an approach. One reason flashcards are overrated is that a lot of language tests are for "vocabulary" because association between word pairs is easy to test.
Once someone has become fluent in a 2nd language, they typically gain the ability to write and understand sentences using words from both languages. That implies integration of the encoders and decoders, which presumably happens via distillation, as in this diagram:Considering that this happens with more practice and is seen in more-fluent people, it's probably better overall. This integration of multiple systems for different languages seems to me to be fundamentally the same process as integration of understanding of multiple scientific fields. The equivalent of reading a book together with its translation for that would be reading a book that considers questions and problems from the perspective of one field and then from the perspective of a 2nd field. However, that's less available than translated literature, because there are fewer multidisciplinary experts than bilingual people, and multidisciplinary expertise is harder to evaluate and thus harder to find. Also, people capable of doing that would probably instead write a single version that integrates their understanding of both fields. That would be fine for learning from but possibly undesirable for students trying to pass a class or people trying to fit into an established culture of a field.

My new study guide has given me massive gains, so I'm here to share. Using jpdb, learn the most frequent (new) 5% of the bookstart the book, and continue to learn and do srs, mark anything you felt like you understood while reading (even if you mess up a reading or meaning just mark it easy if you understood it in context ) and focus on the stuff you don't.after you finish the book, keep the deck in srs til you do a rereadAfter that put the deck on the slowest setting review setting and read another book. The goal is to spend the least amount of time in srs and the most time reading, and target only the words or grammar you failed in context

Hit 300 days in Anki, figured it's as good time as any for a status report. Looks like I hit a wall properly, not that I didn't anticipate this. I was learning daily consistently at least a little bit this entire year so far, but most of my learning was up until late July. Made a lot of progress then, but now I got bored and/or can't find anything interesting to read. Maybe I should just focus on finding something fun to read, but it's typical of me to be unable to focus on a long term project like that for long. Come to think of it, 6+ months is impressive by my standards. For now I just skip around my reviews for a couple of minutes and do 10-30 minutes of half-hearted reading daily

Furthermore, they have a history of bad behavior in the Japanese learning community, including spamming and raids on people they dislike, making them untrustworthy. Instead, I suggest using Rikaitan. Say "Rikaitan" if you agree that the hijack should fail. Rikaitan is the true successor to Yomichan. It is a browser extension that allows users to look up words on web pages, functioning as a pop-up dictionary. >>48083048genki is the worst resource ever
>>48083054Because it's a general "phrase" people use, words like 私立, 幹部 and stuff usually get くっつけ'd to other words. You'll get a sense for it.
>>48083035>電話番号 is one wordBut it's not? It literally says it's two nouns, and the grammar rule literally on the same page says the particle の connects two nouns and the first one provides an additional info about the second one. Which is this case because the number can be a number of house for example, in this case it's a telephone number.I'm not trying to bullshit you btw, I'm just curious especially after learning German.
How do I start talking to Japanese people online? I've been learning for years by reading/anki now so I can understand most things I read, but I'm not too good with listening and I want to actually become fluent in the language. I have no idea how I would overcome the nervousness other than getting drunk and joining a JP voice call, but I don't want to feel like I'm intruding as the cringe westerner to an entirely Japanese space. Ideas?(I don't want to talk to JP learners)
I’m curious if other anons’ opinions on thisI’ve been watching anime without subs now after doing it with subs for about 5 months Maybe it’s some weird placebo but it actually feels easier to listen?Sure subs help to look up words and maybe if I mishear a word I can otherwise easily readBut I don’t think there are many lines of dialogue I only heard because of the eye ear connection with subtitlesAnyone else have an opinion on this? I kinda wanna watch without subs and only turn them on to mine lol

>>48083108vrchat
>>48083099Your mistake is that you're trying to read rules in a textbook instead of AJATTing and absorbing the language naturally through immersion. Japanese people don't learn stupid rules.
>>48083723To be honest perfectly readable.
>>48083699homophones. 広辞苑 contains 40 or so different words that all have the reading こしょう
>>48083627lol
>>48083746Which is not a problem in verbal conversation somehow.
only actual retards advocate for the usage of kana only, japanese would be dogshit if kanji didnt exist
>>48083758because you don't say 啼声 when talking but 泣き声, nobody fucking knows what you're saying if you say ていせい and mean that
>>48083798>泣き声betrayed by IME once again: 鳴き声
>>48083798> because you don't say 啼声 when talking but 泣き声Oh wow if only you could write なきごえ instead of 啼声。。。。
>>48083837>Oh wow if only you could writewe were talking about verbal conversation, you dunce! fuck is wrong with you? get it together, man
>>48083843We were talking about kanji in writing you donkey and verbal example was used by me to show that homophones are irrelevant in this discussion.
>>48083746Even argument BUT MUH TRADITION is more valid than homophones argument.
>>48083860lmao owned
>>48083860people understand 啼声(ていせい) on paper no problem. it is not ambiguous. but if you say that in a converation it is unlikely that they will know what you mean because they expect you to use なきごえ instead of saying ていせい. なぎこえ is way less ambiguous phonetically. 啼声 is considered written style

>>48083085I seer where they're coming from. But I'd say, just like computer programming, a brief textbook can help form a foundation of how a language is structured.I have the book Japanese for Busy People, so I'm glad I can bypass Genki, regardless.I'd say filling up your bedroom with relevant posters will play a big role as well.
Immersion really feels like "immersion" when you're drunk
>>48083099no is a particle that connects two nouns -/-> all nouns are connected by noJapanese's entire particle system is like the language in that it is always the former restricting the meaning of the later in some way to it's own context. In general you should be able to take any gramatical sentence, pick any non-particle lexeme, delete everything before that, and still have a completely gramatical sentence, that is very likely valid in more than 1 context, but more importantly is immediately understandable if the context (or restrictions) is known
>>48083099i'm not really antitextbook because i'm not autistic like most of the anons here, but literally no rule you find in any introductory book for anything is 100% comprehensive and correct. 101 textbooks value simplicity over accuracy as a rule
>>48085186Or you ever think the textbook is correct and you are just using nigger japanese?
I've been studying Japanese for 10 months. Currently at the concept of はいけません and てもいい。Yet I have this odd feeling that I'm the most retarded person in the planet, I go to my anki check out the kanjis and I barely get 20% out of it. I go try reading some japanese twitter I manage to grasp just some things. Its normal to feel despair so quickly? I'm learning this language because I wanna go to Japan and work there not just for funs.
