Supposedly, based on what I read, in some places here or there in Japan you can still find depictions of the canine-type kotengu. There is also the Guhin, a lesser-known cousin to the tengu who was often portrayed as a sort of wolf-themed lesser to the tengu, though in what capacity and extent I don't recall, save that both are considered mountain spirits, but guhin distinctively lack the divine element that tengu have. Except in Hiroshima I think it was, where the inverse is true and guhin are the highest rank of tengu. Lastly, is a story I can't corroborrate but which provided a compelling idea on where ZUN may have pulled them from. I was up reading about tengu one night and trying to research the topic when I stumbled on some odd, seemingly obscure website that may have been tourism-oriented for a particular region in Japan. It had a section on tengu where it described them startlingly similar to how ZUN arrays their society: four castes, with the familiar karasutengu, a wolf-headed caste of soldiers, yamabushi tengu, and the daitengu at the top of their society. A key deviation from ZUN's structuring is that the soldier caste was placed above the crow tengu. It also said that tengu number about a hundred thousand total and live on four mountains that periodically war with eachother. I forgot to bookmark it so I could look at it later and try to look into what it said more, and I haven't been able to find it since. I 'm really not sure how true any of it was exactly, but from wording and illustrations that it used, it seemed to be pulling from at the very least local folklore. But as stated, I can't corroborrate any of it due to negligence, so take everything typed in this section with some salt.

Tengu as a concept are pretty old and I suspect possibly pre-date the kanji used to describe them, though I'm far from qualified to say how or why they may have shifted from canines to corvides or vice versa for a time and the like. As well, they may not owe their origin to any one mainland mythological entity and "tengu" was just the name that became the most commonplace. While it's not their given name for example, crow tengu are specifically typed as karasutengu, even though in most places this is the dominant form they take and is often used as the general form taken by all kotengu. The kawatengu mentioned above I believe was supposed to share traits with herons instead. As for that (((last bit)), I've seen bits of that idea crop up here or there in recent years, and I think that it's just a bit of convergent evolution between visual aspects judaism and practicioners of shugendo, the latter of which are responsible for the garments tengu are traditionally depicted in. As well, shugendo practicioners often revered daitengu as gods (it's kind of a blurry line on if they are or not, touhou not considered in this statement), which is likely why the latter inherited their garments in depictions. If you want my personal hunch on the name thing, I suspect that tengu in concept probably originated among the Jomon people, and tengu in name probably arose when the Yayoi people migrated to the island chain and began intermingling with the former, but I've got just about nothing to base that on.
