Hello, I've been spending the past year or two on creating a new and improved translation of the film "Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters" about Yukio Mishima. The official American translation are dubtitles and often do not follow what is said at all. I'd like to squeeze out a rough draft by the 20th whereupon I travel for Christmas, but there's still a couple of dozen lines I need help with translating. Please read the statement in pic related for more info. Here's what I have so far:https://mega.nz/folder/D1pVjLzC#QTshgn6nF6EIsYU8TBOPRAI am only a rank amateur, but I am confident that what I am turning out is at least an improvement on what has gone before, therefore worth doing, and that once my version is finalised with help, it can then be improved upon further by others in the future.

Why you learn Japanese?
Just finished with Hanahira. I may have gone a bit overboard with making cards (pretty much anything I wasn't too sure of or words that I knew, but hadn't encountered the kanji reading for) but I still ended up with over 300 cards.Planning to move onto reading Narcissu now and I'm wondering how much of a jump that will end up being for me.

>>48477963We can only learn a finite amount per day and images unwillingly take up space in my memory. Instead of remembering the word, now I just remember some vague image instead. With only having the definition(s) of a word on my card, it limits the amount of connections my brain makes to a single card. Basically, I learn better and faster with minimal information because my brain uses less resources than necessary to remember each card, but then again I do 30 new cards a day so my learning has to be optimized.Images taken from anime and vns are also often vague and wont portray the definition of the word. Maybe it can be used to automatically generate example sentences, but alternatively I've heard there are tools that automatically generate sentences somewhere before.

Watching stuff without understanding much or having to painstakingly read the subtitles in japanese and looking up unknown words is a pain in the ass and boring

>>48480687there are 3 skills1. reading kanji2. hearing sounds3. knowing japaneseskill #3 is the most important, and will help you the most with hearing and understanding stuff in anime. reading manga/vns will teach you skills 1 and 3

Does anyone really learn kanji by just using immersion? I feel like it can (inefficiently) assist with acquiring vocabulary, but it seems like my vocabulary ability vastly exceeds my kanji ability. I never use Anki, nor do I do any study aside from immersion, but I feel like I will never even learn all the jouyou kanji at this rate. I guess I should just pick Anki back up, even though I hate it.

>>48480703Scientific studies of eye-tracking indicate that proficient readers view each letter in a word individually, even if your brain and eyes are so fast that it doesn't seem like you do. Reading one character at a time is in fact how you are always reading, just without realizing it. As you gain skill, it will feel more like it does in English, where it just feels like you interpret entire words all at once.
>>48480689what you're doing is anything but immersion
>>48480719>proficient readers view each letter in a word individuallylol
>>48480699>reading manga/vns will teach you skills 1 and 3You can use VNs to help you a bit with Number 2 provided that it's voiced. Obviously it's not as efficient as pushing yourself to watch or listen to things in Japanese, but you should improve at hearing especially if you allow the voiced lines to play out first before reading.
how did it end up like this!?
>>48480730basically, if you read vinnies and also listen to japanese audio on your headphones whenever you're not reading, you're gonna make it very fast
i'm falling in love with my japanese teacher
>>48480725Do you believe that image proves anything? Just because you are capable of reading text like that doesn't mean that you aren't still recognizing each individual letter. If you weren't, then you wouldn't realize that every single word there is misspelled, which any remotely skilled reader obviosly does. Highly skilled readers generaly catch nearly every misspelled word, even in a long text with only one or two of them there. For example, you probably noticed that I misspelled the words "generally" and "obviously" earlier, because you actually look at every single letter individually.

My thoughts on なるとRPG so far...Well, it's better than Sailor Moon for the SNES so far..but it's definitely no final fantasy...i can see myself playing this game to the end for the nihongo gains. There's some challenge involved in having to rely on chatgpt for the language they are using...jisho needs to get with the times and start implementing all dialects on its dictionary.
>>48480873>jisho needs to get with the timesAmerica doesn't want that. America didn't even want Japan to keep using Kanji. America's interest is getting everyone in Japan to speak Tokyo Standard Dialect...If you oppose this goal, you oppose the American Ambission of conquering Japan from within.

Anyone else having problems with NicoNico not loading comments? No matter what video I get it says it has 0 comments despite being an obviously popular video.I seem to remember at one point this was because the comments were filtered by region and I had mine set to US so I had to switch it to Japan, but I don't even see the box to do that anymore and my menus are all in Japanese so I assume the region is already set to Japanese anyways.
maybe if you knew japanese you could change your region but i suggest you switch to english and change your region
>>48480958feel free to reccomend me games. I can't do current gen yet because this laptop is shit, but it can run playstation 2 and lower games, some ps3 games too.Or if it's on Steam, even better. Maybe Corpse Party would be good?i was looking for games aimed at japanese children.
>>48481017I don't really think video games are ideal for learning quickly, especially for beginners. There is significant down-time between reading. Definitely would need to be something with voice acting, at a minimum.I would just go with visual novels or simple anime/TV shows. If you don't feel like focusing that much, you can find a Japanese YouTuber and put a video or live-stream on and casually listen. Hearing the actual sound of the language is what will really help you for the first few thousand hours while you still develop an intuition for the accent. Visual novels are fine despite having a lot of reading so long as they are voice-acted and have a lot of dialogue. You will still hear a lot of the language through them.

>>48481039you're correct in that visual novels and tv shows are technically the best method to learn japanese quickly but if a beginner feels like playing vidya instead theres nothing wrong with this decision. if its more fun that way for the person. we have to remind ourselves that "the best" way isn't often the most fun for everyone and that learning japanese isn't a race. my first japanese medium that i've completed was oot as well.
With an increasing intrusion of katakana in place of historically kanji/hiragana-laden words, Japanese is, strictly speaking, becoming easier over time for learners.

It's either playing them at a normal pace while being able to read, or spamming buttons to skip the text to get to the gameplay. Pretty much all children do one or the other. language learning has been solved for years, what is even the point of these threads anymoreit's just pseuds arguing about why their slightly altered version would be the difference between learning the language or not learning itgo read, go listen, go write
The only hard part is consistently wanting to immerse Especially because once you know grammar and thousands of words it just becomes a numbers game of discovering that second half of vocabulary you need to be complete
i see where you're coming from, but that's never been a problem for me since i'm interested in:JP movies, JP novels, anime, manga, Jdramas, JP TV shows, baseball, etc. once i got past the initial phase of "ugh i cant understand ANYTHING" and started being able to understand a good chunk of what i was consuming, it just stopped even being a concious effort for meunironic matt reference but he had a video about this, if you're not motivated to study japanese you should probably just stop because there really is nothing to gain from it, there is no value to knowing japanese. not telling you to stop ofcourse, cuz i think matto's take leaves out some factors, but there's some truth to it
