Matsuken's fighting scene in a traditional Japanese backyard was the same as the good ol' scenes from the originals that everyone loves. Meanwhile, the fighting scene in the street was Miike's trademark seen in his samurai works. The screenplay was very well-written for a TV SP, it retains the adoring simplicity of the originals while also presenting modern Japanese society problems in an Edo Period setting (like the hostess club scams and dealing with a disabled son). Overall, it was better than expected. With that being said, Matsuken is such a delight to watch. At 71, he's still oozing charisma. Things which are timeless trademarks of corruption in a society and incredibly relevant today. A hostess club scam is extremely juvenile in comparison.
