I don't know how this thread will be received, and I might be mistaken, but I thought this board could use a joshi thread.Although many of you are probably familiar with it, joshi is Japanese women's pro-wrestling. Many joshis are failed idols who decided to try their hands in the wrestling ring. Joshis are some of the best wrestlers in the wrestling business today and put on interesting stories both in and out of the ring. Why am I posting this here when there is a pro-wrestling board? First and foremost, I think there's an overlap of interests here and that many people here who have never been exposed to joshi wrestling would quite enjoy it. Second, the pro-wrestling board is absolute trash and joshi threads are frequently pulled arbitrarily. It's a shame because they are some of the better threads on that board. Haters complain that the posts in question belong here so here we are.The gal in the picture is Miu Watanabe. She is the former Princess of Princesses of Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling (TJPW). You can see a match of hers against Miyu Yamashita here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K-Nmt7piTI&t
>>48682142Starlight Kid vs AZMhttps://www.tokyvideo.com/video/starlight-kid-vs-azmThis match takes place in Stardom, which is the most popular joshi wrestling company and is known for putting on hard hitting matches. Starlight Kid and AZM have been wresting since they were kids and are long time rivals (although they recently started their own unit together).

>>48682342How do you feel about Asian wrestlers typically being turned into "wacky person who shouts in Japanese" type characters upon joining a western promotion?
>>48682726It's honestly disheartening, although I sort of understand it.Puroresu and American wrestling are very different. Puroresu is much more match driven. There are stories, but they're more like the type of stories you'd see in an actual sport. They'll often do stuff like post-match backstage interviews (like you'd see in many sports), but it's not as over-the-top as what you see in traditionally western wrestling. Wrestlers have characters, for sure, but it's much more low key. You get further ahead by being able to put on convincing, hard hitting matches. In the US, there are different expectations. It's much more over-the-top and character driven. The biggest stars have "gotten over" (gained popularity with the fans) not with what they can do in the ring but rather how good they are on the mic. That language barrier makes it very difficult for Japanese wrestlers to really thrive. The real shame is that all the Japanese wrestlers in WWE today were cream-of-the-crop back home. AEW (a newer wrestling company founded back in 2019... not my cup of tea but I guess I prefer it over WWE) tends to avoid this as it has close ties to the Japanese wrestling scene -- it has one guy who leans into the crazy Japanese stereotype somewhat, but he's actually subverting it because he's legit one of the best wrestlers in the world and just doesn't take his opponents seriously.
Joshi puroresu even has its own Big Kaiju!Shoko Nakajima vs Yuuhttps://www.dailymotion.com/video/x92dyci
>>48682761>Puroresu and American wrestling are very different.I often see it said that wrestlers who were big in Japan usually don't have quite the same aura when they join a western promotion, and that's probably why. Even with western wrestlers who made their name in Japan usually lose a little something making the transition.
>>48682726that's more a wweslop sports entertainment thing to do, genuine pro-wrestling promotions like AEW aren't pandering to the statistically-proven poor and dumb edrones that slurp up wweslop so characters like that are avoided>>48682761Okada shouts his profanities in English, BITCH

Hazuki vs Mercedes Mone (WWE's Sasha Banks)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1tX9VbvDW4
I remember a documentary where the senpai gets pissed off that the girl she is training is not putting in enough effort and she nearly drop kicks her head off of her shoulders like really trying to hurt her. Is that the same thing? It wasn't like wwe/f stuff.
>>48687201That was Meiko Satomura. She's actually in this match: >>48682342The pro-wrestling business was a lot harsher in the 90s/early 00's than it is now, and in Japan it was especially harsh. Hulk Hogan trained in Japan back in the 70s and his instructor purposefully broke his leg. Thankfully, it's not quite like that anymore.
I've left out my favorite wrestler - the Stardom Icon, Mayu Iwatani. She's been in a few matches but I intentionally have held off on highlighting her. She is one of the very best wrestlers male or female in the business today and probably an all-time great as well.Mayu Iwatani vs Sareeehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTFm_vDg8mc
>>48687324Mayu has an interesting story. She had an unfortunate incident when she as a teen where she was raped. She became a complete shut-in and would not leave the house. One day she saw pro-wrestling, fell in love with it, and decided she could do that. She ran away from home, applied to work at a very small wrestling startup called Stardom, and was taken in by the owner of the company for a time. They made a move about it in Japan called Runaway Wrestler.
>>48687458Mayu isn't the only shut-in-turned-joshi. Another popular one (in Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling) is Hyper Misao. Misao was a shut-in and suicidal at one point and credits pro-wrestling for saving her life.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTGzdTQ8cow
>>48687201This is the clip you're referring to, if I"m not mistaken. It's brutal. I'd like to say that the rookie ended up going places, but they hazed her out if I recall correctly.People do stupid things when they're younger. She was in her early 20s at the time and Meiko is a highly regarded wrestler. There have sadly been a number of awful incidents in the "sport" - it's a "work" but people are still people and their emotions get the better of them.
>>48687679Yep! I saw that linked on the old /nesn/ threads. Those dudes loved this stuff.
>>48687746There was a match in 2015 that has come to be known as the Ghastly Match Incident. You can look it up if it interests you but I really don't want to link to it here. Basically, a large gal named Yoshiko seriously injured a rising star named Act Yasukawa and forced her into retirement.Since then I think there's been a concerted effort to try to avoid the sort of high-tensions that lead to people intentionally injuring one another in favor of a more team-based spirit.
This link is to a whole show (really worth watching if you're liking this thread), but I wanted to highlight a particular match. One of the biggest feuds in Stardom the last couple of years was between Tam Nakano (Top Kawai of the Cosmos) and Giulia (who was recently hired by WWE). Their rivalry is brutal. This match is for the Wonder of Stardom title and is hair-vs-hair - loser gets their head shaved.Promo-package starts at 2:59:09.https://archive.org/details/stardom-10th-anniversary-show-all-star-dream-cinderella-03-03-21

>>48689121She's a human being. Why does anyone look the way they look.I think she's really cute personally, and she's endearing in the ring.

>>48689190call me shallow, but it's a good thing they now care more for looks in female wrestling. first it's still a show, entertainment, better have a cutie to watch than some beast, second without some cute wrestlers to cheer on people would just stick to the male version.
>>48689212Based kaiju fan
>>48689225I'm inclined to agree. That old stuff was a different time. Those gals in the match you responded to seem to really be wanting to hurt each other. It makes the match better in a way but there's a lot of toxicity underlying it.The more modern style focuses more on team work. There's a lot of skill that goes into it. And like you said, if they're not going to look good might as well watch the men -- men's puroresu is superior to anything in the west. It's in a bit of a down period right now but when it's on top of its game it's the best in the world.

>>48689547me, i liked it. jaypee got some true mean schizos, dont take them too seriously, especially because jannies and mods dont seem to give a fuck about this board so reporting is useless most of the times.
>>48682863Something I always thought was fun about WWEslop was the on screen friendships that seemed to transcend the language barrier, Like how Iyo, Asuka, and Kairi were friends with an Australian (I think she was) that didn't seem to speak or understand a lick of Japanese yet she was always out there speaking on their behalf and having one way one way conversations with them in English.
>>48689606I appreciate that. It's hard to know where the thread stands with most people here because I'm not a regular on this board. I really just wanted to share what I think is something fun that most people will never encounter otherwise.Honestly, these trolls are fucking tame. I'm used to dealing with far worse on pw, and normally I'd dish it back even harder. I'm just saying on my best behavior because, again, I realize this thread involves something outside the norm for most people here.
>>48689636I usually just watch the western slop myself but it's always fun seeing what they are up to in Japan every now and then. Stardom seems like a wacky time based on what I have seen of it and I would be up for watching it if I could do it somewhere for free, because I am cheap.
>>48689657Western stuff can be fun. I tune into WWE and AEW on occasion, but I usually end up tuning out after a while. The thing with Japanese wrestling is that they usually have one big show a month and lots of inconsequential house shows the rest of the time that are completely skippable but fun background stuff when you're in the mood.I'm not sure where to stream Stardom for free. Stardom World is like $6 though. NJPW World is like $10. Wrestle Universe (which has TJPW, NOAH, DDT, and Marigold) is a little over $8.LIke I said, it's the monthly bigger shows that are usually worth watching. A lot of them wind up on archive.org. Stardom's most recent big show is here:https://archive.org/details/stardom-dream-queendom-2024-29-12-24That account also seems to post a lot of big shows from various companies. >>48689636>It's hard to know where the thread stands with most people here because I'm not a regular on this boardThis board was supposed to be about "otaku culture" and niche stuff that couldn't be posted on /a/ or /v/ but was tangential to them. It ended up being filled with threads about Japanese women that the otaku see as "thread about jacking off to japanese girls 1", "thread about jacking off to japanese girls 2", "thread about jacking off to japanese girls 321", "thread about jacking off to japanese girls pretending to be anime girls", "thread about jacking off to japanese girls who are actually whores", "thread about jacking off to japanese girls who are actually whores but don't get naked", etc And then they spam low effort Touhou threads whenever they want to push their idol generals off the board so they can make a new one. No one really wants another thread about 3D women if they had a choice. At this point though, most people re in their generals so most would probably just go "oh another thread to hide" and move on.
