Previous thread: >>48636938This thread is for the discussion of untranslated Japanese visual novels. What are you playing? What are you looking forward to? What have you finished?
>>48700272I don't know what to play, I don't even know if I want to play VNs anymore. Its just too hard to come across that one diamond amongst dirt. The worst feeling is not knowing if I don't like a VN because the story is boring or if I'm just not in the mood, it's impossible to tell which is the issue.
>>48700354Maybe you should take a break, anon.
>>48700354>He got poisoned by the westoid brain virus of NEEDING only 5/5s and not being able to enjoy anything 4.9/5 and blow.>Or indeed caring about muh quality despite it being a completely arbitrary metric instead of enjoying things for their own merits.I would feel bad but your addiction to video essays is obvious.Good riddance.
>>48700539You don't need to tell me you've never played more than 10 VNs, I already know with that shitty take you've never read something that had a story that was personally valuable to you.
>>48700671>a story that was personally valuable to you.you are not going to find those by speedreading through a bunch of vns to keep your high score uptry being less of a jaded cuck
>>48700703I've came across plenty of VNs that were so good I'd replay them again, are you retarded or something? Read some damn VNs instead of just shitposting here for no reason, nobody thinks you're cool.
>>48700715You sound upset you got called out on your jaded shit taste.
>>48700354Take a break, maybe play videogames or something in the meanwhileI always save the VNs i think i will really enjoy for times like these
Anyone read Gensou no Avatar?
>>48700719That's weird, it seemed like I hit a nerve or something and you went of crying and pissing yourself at some invisible westerner boogyman that came out of nowhere. Is everything okay man?

>>48700759You're acting unnaturally hostile for no reason, there might be something wrong with you, maybe take a break from twitter and 4chan lil bro.
Does Nukitashi 2 have a "We are recapping the first game" section?
The new Da Capo heroine is cute!
>>48701679Can I fuck her though?
>>48701681Not unless they decide to release an 18+ version a year later
>>48701679AAAAAHHHHH I FUCKING LOVE WHITE HAIRED RED EYED LOLIS!!!!
>>48701842nta, but they will have to recast the whole vn again then, since the seiyuus for the remake don't do any 18+ at all
>>48701854I wonder how practical it is for them to keep doing that every release.
>>48701877Do allage even sell?

>>48702056Age, Sprite, Nitroplus, Leaf, Laplacian, FrontWing, August, Light, Harukaze, I'm probably forgetting a few othersThey almost all tried to get the gacha money, and most of those who failed are now trying to be clean and get that sweet all age money or go away from VNsYuzusoft and Harukaze tried but failed, though it was to be expected, they don't do plotge
>>48702444ironically at this point the medium is so dead they would start making big bucks again off normal r18 and some generic drpg gameplaynot even necesarily good gameplay, people are so starved they will take anything
>>48702421Outside of popular slop like atlus jrpgs, 2d kakuges and dripfeed VNs with gacha systems like FGO and HBR. You'd have to go dive into rpgmaker style shit for stuff like black souls.

anyone have any idea what the word アウタイレトン is supposed to be? Celenaria has a lot of French so I was assuming it's that.

>>48703372NYC became such a massive shithole, I kinda wish there were more games covering how bad things are.
>>48702324This post is a 12 year old saying "I hate how the 9 year olds are all playing roblox, they should be playing real games like minecraft and fortnite like I did"

>>48703290Insanely slow game with awkward platforming. I only played the first game though. Also there's tons of missable conversations in the game that can influence the ending.

>>48703764Wouldn't compare them to my favourite VNs since they're pretty different but if you like chuuni stuff and don't mind emulating try Persona 3. I don't really like playing games either but I gave it a try after Masada was talking about Senshinkan ideas coming from persona and enjoyed it.
>>48703806>>48702563>personaI was always put off by the heavy references to western psychology. Is it just a part of the setting and nothing more? If so I'll try it.

>>48703818You can, there's quite a few references to 1 that will go over your head but you don't need to play 1 first unless you want to.
>>48703814>>48703810It was my misunderstanding. Is Persona 3 the most chuuni and VN-like?
>>48703871Yes. Well Persona 4 feels more VN-like but its not chuuni
>>48703764>>48703810most of the SMT games and their offshoots like persona are pretty good to decent, even some of the doujin eroge knockoffs aren't bad

found an old post from 2012, is the hierarchy still the same?>>9776066>grand hierarchy of scenario writers:>Setoguchi > Narahara > Mareni > Jackson > Urobuchi > Romeo > Masada
>>48704092Like half of those guys haven't released anything since then, so it can't have changed much.
>>48704092Where's Maeda and Nasu?
>>48703764Some games I like: Shadow Hearts 1+2, Bealphareth, 九龍妖魔學園紀. 九龍 is probably the most similar to a VN since it has ADV parts. It's quite similar to Persona but you are a treasure hunter exploring a ruin under a school in Indiana Jones style. For something more recent Romancing Saga 2 Remake is pretty good.
>>48704092my top 3 is maruto, setoguchi, nasu. scaji at the bottom. sakuuta put me off so much that I don't even want to check out nijuuei. also where would you guys put watanabe?
>>48704092narahara lol, found the mememasa shill
>>48704092>no hiruta masatongmi
>>48704465We have a communal sport of dunking on Muramasa and Subahibi, but their stories demonstrate a competence and intentionality which make them deserve their place among the best made VNs. I don't know how you can be a fan of this medium and be so stubborn on trashing them
>>48704932This. Our medium is so good it's hard to make a completely irredeemable title because of what soul goes into all parts of a work. We need to be allied in these tough times.
Mileage may vary but for me Cross Channel, Ima, Subahibi, Sakura no Uta, Muramasa, Oretsuba and Nukitashi should just be in the ‘how the hell were they written’ monster tier and not even be rated. If you start nitpicking at their flaws, it’s easy to find them but doing it with these titles in particular just feel tasteless to me.
>>48704092>is the hierarchy still the same?outdated, if you only did one with current writers we have, it would be>Setoguchi > Scadi > Fuyuakane Tom > Lucle > Kazuki Fumi > Masada > Sakaki Kasa > Urushibara > KudouAt least they try to do their own stuff
She said it!
>>48704092swap masada and the butcher

>>48704248I've read all of Scaji's works, and I'd say that Nijuuei is very much divorced from what Scaji wrote during his career, especially his most popular works. Nijuuei is much more digestible when it comes to 哲学, as it's less the focus compared to some of his other works; Nijuuei in short, is essentially historical porn with lots of references to classic Japanese literature, with the story being set in early Edo. The story focuses less on the heroines (they are barely relevant to the plot and it's hard to say that the story has any real routes) but much more on the protagonist -- a swordsman who has been cursed since birth forcing him to live through the blade in order to survive. The story essentially takes place on a small island, and the story's focus is on unveiling both the protagonist and the island's mysteries. The VN works more like a point and click in the sense that most of the choices in the VN (there are a lot of them) are more about visiting and moving around the island over the course of the story. It's a very atmospheric piece of work that's really good at crafting its own atmosphere, and the soundtrack is pretty good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12Hz8ENb9cEOh, and the VN had a strong emphasis on martial arts, including a particular style of 剣術. It's the kind of work that push you to study some interesting part of history in an engaging way. This is one of the few Scaji works to feature actual combat scenes with Moekan, the latter going full chuunige at times. I personally found them pretty cool in Nijuuei.Maybe not quite kamige-level, but certainly one of the most unique VN I've personally read. It's obvious that Scaji took great enjoyment working on this particular work, and I'd even go so far as to say it's one of my favorite work of his. I'm a little sad that the project to remake/make a pseudo-sequel to Nijuuei was abandoned in favor of more Sakuuta, since the little we know of the project was very promising. So yes, if you didn't like Sakuuta, I wouldn't worry, because the Scaji of the time when he wrote Nijuuei is mostly different from Sakuuta Scaji.
I didnt really get it, but man Kanata was so cute and hot. I wonder if anyone else played this.

>>48702421>Any Japanese games that feel like VNs?If you'd like some rpgmaker recommendations that aren't just black souls, i'd recommend 被虐のノエル and 千年時計 they're pretty much VNs sans the narration

How do you cope with the inherent soullessness of many aspects of many eroge caused by the fact the different elements are staffed by different people and that at least some, if not many of them (in some cases perhaps ALL of them) are just doing it for a paycheck and couldn't care less about about the work (they may even actively dislike it)?
>>48703543>>48703803that's some really cozy background art
>>48707537You learn how to appreciate things as is and love the characters for who they are.Let's face it, none of these characters would even be appreciated if there wasn't any audience for them. The fact eroge, especially untranslated, is so niche and obscure, you might as well be the only person gives a shit about the game and characters especially if you have finished it fully. It's like picking up an abandoned child and giving them the love they deserve even if their parents hate them.
>>48707537What psycho cares about that shit, as long as they make good shit all ok.
>>48707537Stop playing moege
any vns with a good/funny protag like kaito/yuuji from ang and grisaia? nowadays the protagonist for the piece of media i consume can make or break it for me
>>48707414This game any good? It's been sitting on my backlog forever
>>48707537I view visual novels as platforms that provide opportunities for individual artists to shine. Some VNs are holistic successes and you can completely give yourself over to them and have a wonderful time, but if you expect EVERY visual novel you read to be like that, you're just setting yourself up for constant disappointment. Most VNs are mixed bags. It's very common for a VN to have some routes that are excellent and others that are terrible, or to have a great story but frustrating gameplay, or vice versa, or any other combination of strong and weak aspects. If you want to get the most out of the medium, it's best to gain an ability to say something like, "Wow, DragonAttack's soundtrack was great, and that last chapter was awesome!" and walk away with some happy memories even if you didn't like the majority of the experience. It's still important to be critical and acknowledge what was done poorly or wrong and didn't work, but if you can do that AND at the same time truly enjoy what was done well and right and did work, you'll be able to get something out of almost every title you play.
>>48707625Unironically もっと!孕ませ!炎のおっぱい異世界エロ魔法学園!
>>48707537I don't like how everyone are forced to use pseudonyms because it makes everything feel fake as fuck and that they are doing just for the money so i just try to not think about it desu.Take for example what >>48707613 anon says some moege like hoshiori blows the fuck out of the water every single romance and romcom shit of modern light novels and even those who get anime adaptations nowadays yet because one happens to have R18 content they are forever banished to the "pornography section, don't take seriously"
>>48707537iirc scadi and nexon's boss said that nobody really work in the eroge industry without liking it at least a tiny bit, since the paid is uber shit and even working at a konbini would be better for them, and those who don't like eroge fuck off after a few years, or try to go all ageThough it's only for plotge and charage
>>48707537It's not all about muh creativity. It's a job/skill just like any other. If it's technically well done and follows the core otaku soul it's going to be good. You never know the intentions of people anyway>what if my favorite game was actually made by people that hated it
>>48706763Blazblue doesnt feel like a VN, the story modes ARE a VN with some fightan gameplay sprinkled. Melty Blood TL would have been great with something similar.
One day there will be a brave moege developer that will try to innovate and give the heroines you didnt choose in that route a partner after the time skip in the story(it if has it)It's hilarious that even after a 5 year timeskip or something they stay lonely while the MC is still in a relationship with the heroine of that route, there should be more meaning in selecting when selecting which heroine you want to win.
>>48709076Heroines that I don't choose should be a backup for whenever the heroine I chose dies of a heart attack.
>>48709076then it wouldn't be a moege anymore, dipshit
>>48709076>brave>innovateSo true...
>>48709094No one is getting ntr'd, the MC already choose a girl and since there was a timeskip they have been together for years, if another heroine say they are engaged is not ntr, cheating or other delusions since the MC is already in a relationship, don't like it? Done with Asuka's route This ending was... abrupt. I knew nothing would reach a conclusion since this isn't the true route, but still. In the end, there was no conclusion with the class album, hell Takashi and Asuka didn't even write something even thought it seemed to be a huge fucking deal, I mean, they keep talking about it through the whole route. No conclusion for Takauchi nor Morisato too. I get that Hariu managed to find the will to graduate, and Kobato finally accepted Takashi as his brother, but it was really damn light and fast... I liked Shuusuke and Hariu in this side, good bros
>>48710156Dude, all the endings are like this. Even the true route, to a lesser degree. It's not a game you play for the "story".
>>48710156It took Jackson 6 years and the game still feels rushed. At least there is After Story.
>>48707652I've read chapter 1 so far. I'm liking it, quite a bit. it's a solid 7.5/10. Can recommend.

>>48710156Yeah, as others have said Oretsuba isn't a game you play for grand plot where everything comes together at the end. Though you will get a funny resolution to Takauchi's character in the true route. Morisato will also get more development in Naru's route and there's a lot of funny shit with him in the true route, so look forward to that. Personally I thought Asuka's route was the weakest part of the game. Naru's route was the best. Hayato is just too good.

>>48710966>bad VN for text hookingIronically and unironically, Nukitashi. The one which would benefit from reading it in the original the most, due to the amount of shimoneta and other puns. But last time I remember you needed some software that generated a hook based on your OS environment.
>>48711007I mean, Oretsuba does have a story, but it's more that Oretsuba uses it's story more as a framework to explore its themes rather than focusing on the story as something that needs to have a clever resolution. That's actually something I really like about Oretsuba. There are some VNs that use multiple personalities as an epic twist thats supposed to wow the reader, but in Oretsuba it's not really treated as a twist, it is just the lens that all of the protagonists view their lives, and you can clearly see how their entire mindset and way of living is warped by coping with the fact that they are transient personalities that could disappear at a moments notice
>>48710966Pretty much anything heavy SLG. Too many elements that can't be caught by the text hooker. Same for stuff with a lot of gameplay elements in general (but then it starts being a game and not a VN). Stuff that has with audio and no accompanying text too, of course.

>>48711608Because I want to see the year I made the save not just the date and month. Also sometimes it doesn't just save files in he folder directly, it's always saved to a single .sav file, whatever the last modified date is on the file will just be your most recent sav.Maybe the year is stored in there in the save file though, I never tried looking I guess. Nah it wasn't.

>>48707537>many of them (in some cases perhaps ALL of them) are just doing it for a paycheck and couldn't care less about about the work (they may even actively dislike it)? This is weird cause the only mediums where you get just 1 guy's talent extracted into a work are books, manga, and music (even then you can have meddling editors, producers, etc.)I think it's not really an issue as long as you have a dictator who has a vision and cares about it. Good composers for example can compose good music on commission for a soundtrack even if they don't care about the thing they'r emaking the soundtrack for,you just need a director to give feedback and specifiy what he does and doesn't want from the creatives working under him

>>48710886My standard recommendation for complete beginners is the EMIT trilogy by Koei. It's a short science fiction story (~90 minutes). Uniquely, the editor had a doctorate in English and specifically constructed the story to be as easy to translate into English as possible so it could be used as edutainment software. It's a very mild, soft challenge with a good story. Because its so short, you can choose to either read the included English version first, then read it in Japanese using what you remember from your first time through, or just read it in Japanese and take it slow.

>>48711996You've probably already played it if you're a fan of this genre, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed お兄ちゃん、キッスの準備はまだですか?
>>48712235龍が如く is my favorite イケメン simulator. There are multiple points in the story where hot chicks will 逆ナン you right off the street. There's also a story arc I really like in one of the games where you get a job as a ホスト and have to bust your pretty gigolo ass to not get fired. The protagonists are so イケメン that a lot of women will actually play the games just for them, so I think it's a good fit for what you're looking for. They're mostly gameplay but each title usually has 10-20 hours of visual novel packed in too. I recommend starting with 0 because it's a good starting point and it has ユキ and she's my 24-hour Cinderella.
Asairo, and (in a good way) I have no idea where this is going to go after all the personal issues of the main characters have been explored
>>48713117All I'm seeing is ugly 3D butas bro. What part of this game is a visual novel exactly?
>>48710886Don't do anything too easy like hanahira you'll be bored. Do something like Yami no koe or Midori no Umi. Leyline is also a good pick but I got bored and dropped it halfway through.
I need something with a lot of blowjobs and a lot of lolis
The best girl has appeared. Interestingly, if I open the pc version, this scene is different from the one in the switch. The difference in the pc scene is https://litter.catbox.moe/9yzpb4.png
>>48713178くれよんちゅーりっぷ ?
>>48713028What a cute girl. Huge shame we can't fuck her.
>>48713031I look like this. What VN should I read?
>>48713222That's par for the course with switch versions.
>>48713222>The best girl has appeared.Indeed. You're making me want to replay musicus on switch this time.
>>48713167>What part of this game is a visual novel exactly? The part where you spend hours talking to them and choosing dialogue options. Most games have six to ten routes and each route is maybe about two hours long. There's also lots of little side stories that are mostly dialogue and some of them are also romances. The art is a bit of an acquired taste, I suppose. Across the series the models are definitely hit or miss (some being very, VERY miss) but when they hit they hit. It's an easy series to recommend to someone who wants an experience that's a mix of a traditional visual novel and something wildly, completely different. If you're only in the market for moege, then yeah, stay away. It has great moege moments but also mountains of the exact opposite.

>>48712235Sakuuta, Ef, Konyaku. There is also the competent MC tag on vndb.>>48713117Don't know much about the Yakuza series but the memes seem pretty fun.https://youtube.com/shorts/300QtMZGISE

>>48709309It's just jyaku chara tomosaki kun with retarded heroine. The lack of comedies compared to previous work is really bothering. NBR onee-san best girl.
>>48711975As the other anons said, I don't believe there's any real difference in terms of the games but I do actually own the pentabox in case you wanted something specific.
>>48710423Him.
>>48714208>asapro game with no comedy?????????
>>48714422that anon is just being weird. i played the trial as well and it's the same style of comedy as every other game that this writer has done.
>>48710833That's a pretty good way to describe it. Oretsuba is basically a slife of life, except it's a slice of life into three deeply mentally unhealthy guys as they navigate school bullying, gang wars, and manzai routines at the restaurant they work at. But most of the story is more driven by "what's going on in this guy's life today" than it is by an overall narrative or progression towards a goal.
>>48714492>not a plotgeInto the trash it goes
>>48714768Is subahibi a plotge?
>>48714771Limits of language are too restraining to accurately label Subarashiki. Let's say it is a... philosophyge... and call it a day.
>>48714782ok, so oretsuba's that toothey're pretty similar vns except Takashi is even more mentally unhealthy than Takuji.
>>48714208>It's just jyaku chara tomosaki kun with retarded heroine.Do you mean the plot is also about MC trying to become a normalfag?
