Surgery update: 100% success. Turns out I didn't need to buy a whole new pair of knee joints as they did in fact separate. Just needed pliers to overcome my weenie hand strength. Never hurts to have spare Obitsu parts though, given their fondness to fail in spectacular ways. Hurry up and restock those ankle joints.

This is probably it for the major external mods on Hibiki. At this point she's an Obitsu-hybrid version of a DDP, with most of her Azone-ness is gone. She might regain some if I get the new L bust, but I don't see Azone supporting it outside of doll specific full sets. Probably be a downgrade as well from her current 2nd place status.

anybody in the US know a way to buy from mandarake that won't cost 150usd to ship a single doll dress? it's fucking insane.
>>
>>50236870
Unfortunately anon, at least for now, this is our new reality. Learning to sew has never been a more attractive pursuit.
>>
>>50236870
Find someone on the inside that will send you the item and under-declare its cost and/or send it as a gift. Good luck with that.

>>50236879
Learning to make and mend your clothing is always a valuable skill to have.
>>
>>50236870
Mandarake sometimes* also list their items on Mercari or Y!J. You'll need to find that same item listing on an alternative website. Then use 3rd party service like buyee, etc. To buy it for you. Pay them the small commission and their lower shipping cost.
(I did this many times)
>>
>>50237592
>>50236879
Yeah, I lucked out with that earlier this year and used my normal proxy just fine, I guess I just didn't know it was a fluke at the time. I just wish they wouldn't ONLY offer the most expensive DHL line.
>>50237100
It's not even the tariff, which wouldn't be more than 20 for the dress, it's the using only DHL that's lame about it. If Volks can send me a doll DHL for 50 bucks, there's no reason Mandarake can't send a single dress for the same. Just typical Japanese weirdness.
>>
>>50237592
I think they're complaining about the tariffs spiking the shit out of doll clothes. So many hobbies have been effectively killed by them over the last few months.
>>

>and some raffia
I instantly realized I had everything at my disposal to copy this idea, thanks anon.

To make, I cut two strips of paper then placed them in the sewing machine. I ran a line of stitches down the paper, adding raffia between the paper as I went. I did three lines of stitches across the raffia, making a mat of even thickness. Then I tore away the paper from the stitches and trimmed the ends of the raffia even on the top and bottom. Applied glue to a ~6mm wood dowel and wrapped the start of the mat around it, waited for it to cure, then tightly wrapped the rest of the mat and tied it with a ribbon bow.

DD and MDD were established long before, and the in-between sizes have weird support prop-and-clothing-wise by comparison as a result, so they're less popular. They're probably my favorite scale, though.

Unfortunately camera sensors can do weird stuff to darker skin colors, dolls included. The first gen choco SmartDolls for example had a very noticeable purple tint on a lot of cameras. You'll have to fix it in post, meaning lightroom/darktable/photoshop/whatever. Don't ask me how though, I just press random buttons and sliders until I get something that looks passable.

Thanks for asking!

Blog post incoming:
She is about 10 years old. I set up my doll outside and put some bread crumbs on her hand and the ground near her feet. The chicken wasn't fed yet. Then, I let my hen out and she was actually very hesitant to go near my doll even with the treats nearby! My hen preferred to forage elsewhere for breakfast. I even had to steer my hen to go near my doll for the pictures. She didn't really care for my doll and just focused on eating the bread crumbs while circling as far from the doll as possible. She wouldn't even eat the bread crumbs out of my doll's hand lol
I didn't like the lighting on the pictures and gave up the photo session. There were also a lot of grass insects outside and I didn't want to risk putting the doll on the grass either.

I bought my first doll and it came with a wig thats basically as long as the doll body (30cm)
it's very beautiful straight blonde hair but i want to style it into 2 big braids like pic related

the problem is im a guy (male) and have zero clue on how to braid hair in general, let alone doll wigs

so anybody happen to have helpful guides on this? bonus if its a guide for braiding doll wigs specifically and not just hair in general cuz i know this will be tougher on a smaller scale
>>
>>50286811
Styling doll wigs is the same as styling any other wig as the goals of hiding the wig cap and holding shape on and off are the same. Look on youtube for cosplay wig styling tutorials for the style you want, they're usually made out of the same materials so everything transfers 1 to 1, just in smaller scale of course. Just make sure your wig said is was heat safe before heat treating, it'll usually mention 'heat safe' or 'HRF/HSF'
As for tools, for a brush get a flat bristle tooth brush to use as a brush and you'll need small hair ties, stuff made for children and babies is about the right size but will still seem too big.
Congrats on your new doll anon!
>>
>>50286967
thank you anon!
truth be told youtubes search function has been hot garbage so all i get are shitty youtube shorts and most are for black girl braids sadly

Also whats a good way to get started with faceups? Are there any sets?

Unrelated to the picture I got also got an mdd doll, but I didnt like the default head (body only was sold out at volks).
I bought another head on etsy that was supposedly compatible but it ended up being a kimdoll head. I was able to frankenstein it on the body but the size is a little off from the original. It looks ok in the coat she is wearing but I might aswell try getting into faceups.

Finish modeling pic related so I can print it and start painting over the weekend. Sew a fitting evening dress to go along with it. I have a rough sketch for the design but no patterns yet, so that's gonna take a while.

Hey anons, a friend of mine wants to get into dolls for a very specific reason (beyond finding them cute, of course.) They do stop-motion animations, and are looking for something with good (but consistent, steady) articulation. In that realm, smaller things are usually far easier to work with, so I was thinking some of the blind box dolls might be a perfect starting point for their specific use case. What do all of you think?

It was included as part of a furniture set from 夢見2号ちゃん@ch2yumemi2 who sometimes sell things on Y!J. He doesn't sell the flail by itself. Its made of a 3d printed handle, jewelry chain, and a styrofoam ball spray painted black.

So I first bought an aliexpress doll based off xiongmei doll body
but now i actually want to buy a genuine brand doll and saw this Imomo doll body which is cute and chibi

this is a 1/6 but im curious, will i need special shoes for these fat legs or is it just an optical illusion and most shoes for 1/6 dolls will fit these?
I'm always so confused on how to measure shoes and feet for these style of dolls

also i imagine any head that uses the S hook will fit too right??
https://www.janesdolland.com/product-page/imomo-dolley-doll-1-6-doll-body-pumpkin
>>
>>50312893
Most 1/6 doll bjd yo-sd size shoes should fit. The legs aren't overly thick, a lot of 1/6 bjd have similar sized legs, so it'll mostly depend on the foot size. Boots may/may not fit but if they aren't high boots most won't have issues.

1/6 shoes meant for 1/6 obitsu, pure neemos etc will not fit, so make sure if you buy shoes to check if it's for 1/6 yo-sd BJD or 1/6 fashion dolls.

I have two and they're alright. Otohimes aren't jointed like that of internal frame vinyl dolls like Dollfies, Smartdoll, Obitsu, Imomodoll, etc. They're more on a hinge that has been molded to lock in with each other but can be taken apart with enough heat. The vinyl used is a lot more rough and feels like that of vinyl used in children's toys, if not a bit rougher.
They pose alright. Articulation is more limited but they can sit and kneel. You will need a hairdryer or something to warm them up if you want to take them apart or it can damage the doll. You won't be able to take them apart like a Dollfie.
They are very light for their size. It's a bit difficult finding clothes for them since they have a very narrow body. If you have some baby clothes they might fit but I don't know about shoes. Wig size is around 16 inches if you choose the anime sculpts.
I do like them, and want to get another body for a custom Otohime head I have from an artist, but shipping costs for Otohimes are quite high due to their size.

Got my tinyfox in the mail, these things are disgustingly cute. Out of the box, limbs aren't great. One arm is kind of loose at the wrist, both shoulders are super tight. Eye sockets were poorly cut at the back so I had to take a dremel to them to get the eyes to seat better. Wig is very nice, a couple of hairs weren't cut and the bangs are a little u shaped, but it's pretty minor. Outfit is nice, I probably should've ironed the shirt, some parts were a little hard to get on because of her fat ass, I didn't bother getting the hot pants fastened at the back. Overall, like an 8.5/10, might buy another one next year.

Are Suigintou Anon and West Virginia Anon still here? I love your dolls.
>>
>>50348386
Believe it or not, there's at least two West Virginia anons. I'm one of them, and I'm very humbled that someone likes my dolls. I'll try to take some new photos soon, if I can. The last few years have been difficult, but we persevere. One of the best things about dolls is that when times are tough, they will wait for us. I hope to return to my hobbies again one day.

Luna, Dorothy, and a fair few others besides. I am very lucky to have been able to adopt them from those who commissioned or created them originally, and I am very happy that others appreciate them as much as I do, too. They are still here, safe and sound, sitting on a shelf nearby to where I am typing from. Thank you for your kind words.

Always lovely to see Samus, too! This makes me think, I wish Volks sold hands (like the Miku hands) with pre-painted nails. Even something very simple would be worth the cost, and it would be such a fun accessory to swap out with a doll's outfit.
>>
Anyone ever ordered a custom wig maker before?

I used to be really good about making sure all my hands had painted nails, but I fell off as I got more and more hands and trying to keep track of which hands had what color on them for which girl. That should be my doll resolution for next year.

It was quite breezy up at the top, so I didn't want to get too adventurous with taking pictures close to the edge. I do want to play around with making a custom stand for taking pictures on uneven surfaces like these. I think I could make something like the "invisible stands" but have it terminate in something similar to those octopus tripods instead of a plate/block. It will take some fiddling, though

As a "behind the scenes," I'll say that getting a better tripod has helped a ton with taking pictures. They help out so much with taking a stable shot in some very awkward places. I don't think I could have taken this shot without mounting the camera, as I had to do an awkward splits between some of the rocks to even use it on the tripod. It is all in good fun, though

my first thought is it could be back/front focus from uncalibrated lens
but also I'm finding it hard to locate a spot fully in-focus in that pic, so maybe it's a decentered lens (e.g. dropped at some point and became misaligned)
what you got, an ILC of some ilk? if so you can try other lenses for the same mount
also if you can try manual focus + focus peaking + zoomed preview like picrel
also a remote release if you don't have one already, can't tell from >>50360711
>>
>>50360974
Thanks! It was quite cold, especially with the wind at the top, but it was a fun morning
>>50361013
>zoomed preview
That's something I've been trying to do, but my camera has this weird behavior where the preview will drop to something like 1-3 fps if I zoom in enough. I'm not sure why it does this (or if this is just normal camera stuff), and it makes manually focusing very difficult.
>remote release
It helps with any camera shake, but I still can't get crisp stuff even with it. In that picture, I had forgotten to plug it in before I took it, but I am pretty sure I was using it for that (since I used it on the rest)
>try other lenses
I'll have to do more focused testing, since the kit lens I also have gave me similar issues iirc. I've only ever used refurb equipment (both the body+kit and the prime I bought later) so it could be something failing there. It doesn't seem like my camera lets me adjust my AF setting, which means I can't calibrate my lenses? (I don't know if there are other methods of doing so, this was just a cursory search)
>>
>>50361353
Have you tried manual focusing? Should be very easy with a tripod and live preview. Plenty of older cameras have shit AF points, if possible set it to only the center one.

>>
>>50363253
Not mine, but I was thinking it seemed "off" in some way; now I know why. Do you think it would be more proportionate if this was an MDD? (I have little practical knowledge of bikes, unfortunately.)

Not mine, unfortunately. I just posted something from ye olde doll archives to bump the thread.
>>
>>50363263
>Do you think it would be more proportionate if this was an MDD?
Definitely.
If we do some quick and dirty math, the seat height on a 1299 is ~83cm. A 1/3 bike would have a seat height of ~27.7 cm (83/3) while a 1/4 bike would be ~20.9 (83/4). A 1/3 doll is ~50cm with an inseam of ~23cm (50/2.18 based on averages by height and accounting for dolls tending to have longer legs proportional to their body) while a 1/4 doll is ~40cm with an inseam of ~18.3cm (same metrics). Considering that you'd lose some inseam length due to having to open your legs to straddle the bike, a 1/3 doll on a 1/3 bike would have her feet dangle 5-6cm of the ground (flat foot) on either side and be unable to put both feet down even tiptoeing while a 1/4 doll on a 1/4 bike would dangle about 3-4cm and might be just barely able to tiptoe the bike in the upright position.

If you're in the 'States you can check Denver Doll Emporium to see what's in-stock and avoid tariffs. ACBJD and Stacy's Pink Ocean are some more retailers with a lot of variety and reliable reputation. Jane's Doll Land as well, especially for those 1/12-scale "blind box" dolls.

>>50368173
Welcome and what a beautiful doll you have! Great photo, anon.
>>
>>50370226
Tbh I don't see the point in getting a serger if all you're sewing are doll clothes as a hobby. Any half decent sewing machine can do overlock stitches nowadays. Sure, a serger is faster and the result looks slightly neater but the amount of fabric you're working with is so much smaller compared to human clothes it doesnt really make a difference.

DDdy, some (silicone) Evoke Doll bodies might also interest you if you can keep up the maintenance on them.
