Does he deserve his shit reputation for the Battles of the Isonzo? After all what else could he realistically have done? He had a very narrow mountainous front with no room for any sweeping manoeuvres or flanking. And he won most of the battles.

Russia has for the first time deployed new strike drones, the 'Geran-5' and 'Geran-4'.>Russian forces first used the new strike drone 'Geran-5' during attacks on Ukraine in early 2026, according to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. The drone is a large jet-powered UAV with a classic aerodynamic design, differing from earlier models.>The 'Geran-5' has a length of about 6 meters and a wingspan of about 5.5 meters. It is equipped with a Chinese-made turbojet engine, capable of carrying a warhead weighing about 90 kg and hitting targets at a distance of up to 1,000–1,050 km. Its navigation system includes a 12-channel 'Comet' satellite system, a microcomputer-based tracker, and 3G/4G modems.>According to Ukrainian intelligence, the design of the 'Geran-5' contains elements similar to the Iranian drone Karrar. There are discussions about the possibility of launching this UAV from aircraft, such as the Su-25, and its potential equipping with 'air-to-air' missiles.>As for the 'Geran-4', it is known that it is an intermediate jet version between the early 'Geran' models and the new 'five'. According to preliminary data, this drone may have a warhead weighing about 50 kg, a speed of 350–500 km/h, a range of up to 950 km, and can also be launched from the Su-25.>Thus, the 'Geran-5' is a new jet-powered long-range strike UAV, comparable in its characteristics to a cruise missile, while the 'Geran-4' is considered its less powerful predecessor

Over the past century, technological changes have come about which would actually make the Ratte a viable platform.>miniaturization of nuclear reactors>miniaturization of nuclear warheads>lasers for defense against drones and missiles>improvements to computers for fire controlThere is no better time than now to build the Ratte.
There is only one scenario where a Rat-like would be useful, and that's basically as super heavy self propelled artillery that uses already manufactured shells/cannons. This is only useful for Germany because it means they have a way to punch far outside the range of any other land based artillery systems without needing to risk sending their dwindling air force into AA hell to drop bombs on the target. This is only useful during WWII when Germany is on the back foot and needs a way to hit things very far away without aircraft, as before WWII the technology to make engines strong enough didn't exist, (it barely existed in WWII), and after WWII the same role can be filled by rocket/missile artillery for a fraction of the cost. Plus it's inherently blocked by the simple fact Germany couldn't even make engines/transmissions for normal sized tanks that didn't shred themselves, making one 4x the size would have been a complete and utter waste of resources even if they managed to make it work.
>>64749159>super heavy self propelled artillery that uses already manufactured shells/cannonsSounds great for nuclear artillery.>after WWII the same role can be filled by rocket/missile artillery for a fraction of the cost.Missiles get curbstomped by lasers.

>>64750051No, I've found it to be that Officers are generally nice to everyone. It is chiefly up to the SNCOs (Chiefs) to do all the flexing and torturing of the lower enlisted, a role I'm pretty sure they developed on their own.
>>64750051The Navy (unlike every other branch, and yes I consider the Marine Corps to be a subordinate of the Navy) has not just it's own multi-century tradition but also inherits from far older naval tradition. The officers of a ship commanded power through displays of civility and grandeur, which is best displayed in opulent uniform. This display of wealth and command contrasted with the squalor and filth that performed the tasks necessary to keep the ship afloat. The enlisted inherit from a tradition of unbathed men subsisting off of gruel and sleeping in their own shit while the officers inherit from a tradition of fine dining and cozy bunks. In short, the uniform represents where each man best belongs. A naval officer belongs at a banquet whilst a sailor belongs in dingy seaside taverns. Both are perfectly happy with their lot in life.
>>64750051lol I hated wearing cracker jacks so much I commissioned. The navy is weird about it's division of classes between Os, Chiefs and mid/junior enlisted. >>64750116That's kind of universal all around. It's not really the officer's job to get in an enlisted man's shit. It's just that some CPOs can be pretty shitty and take it too far.
>>64750209How's the quality of life difference? Im in BDCP now so if I fuck myself at OCS I go into undes so I'd like to hear why I should keep running 3 miles a day to keep up my cardio despite hating running.

>>64749158I'm doing this on a wood lathe. I do have a metal lathe and a lot of metal shop experience so I could make turned metal fittings, but I'm specifically focusing on woodwork with these projects. The point is to get experience *out* of my comfort zone. I do agree with you that metal collars where the different woods join would look cool though. Something else I've been meaning to fool with is nice-looking thread wrapping, like you see on pool cues and fishing poles. That is incredibly strong too. I've used that method to reinforce tool handles but never tried to make it look nice. That could be a good solution to the issue mentioned in >>64730086
