If I understand correctly, the American launcher is a compulsator powered linear induction motor, while the Chinese launcher is essentially a capacitor powered railgun. The American design uses AC power because the compulsator generates AC and the LIM consumes AC, while the Chinese design uses DC power because the capacitors store DC and the railgun consumes DC. I don't know much about the relative advantages of compulsators vs capacitors or induction vs homopolar motors, but I think that's where you'll find the reasons for the different methods.

Pistol related but last question thread died a while ago. Are all 1911 .45 barrels interchangeable with all other 1911 models? I've got a Kimber and want a threaded barrel for it and I'm wondering if I should just get a Kimber barrel for it.
