Was the PPSh-41 a viable weapon compared to the PPS-43 or was it a rear area weapon only?

They are functionally identical, the 43 is just a lot cheaper to make.

The 43 had superior magazine feed lips. The 41 was obsolete single feed double stack.

You are getting sent to Stalingrad, you can have a nugget or a PPSh-41, is the 41 obsolete?

You would be that happy if you survived ww2 as a soviet

Someone should edit sam Hyde's face in there

the PPS43 was technically a superior weapon, but the PPSH41 was already being made in massive quantity and it was deemed too costly to switch production lines over
so despite being easier to mass produce, they only made 2M PPS compared to 6M PPSH

so the PPS never got close to replacing the PPSH as a frontline weapon, with the chinese still using them as their main SMG in the korean war

If the 41 was a Thompson then the 43 would be the Grease gun. Cheaper and eats less ammo.

Have both as open bolt semi conversions.
PPSh is a blacksmith's gun, PPS is an engineer's gun - the Sudayev is better made and more thoroughly engineered, manufacture probably took more time to set up, but after that they were cheaper and faster to make. The metal is thinner, machining cleaner, the whole gun is more efficient on multiple levels. Better controls than PPSh, compact, flat, easy to carry, super easy to strip. Has safety you can actually use and nice magazines. Folding stock sucks horribly and the combination of lightweight gun and comparatively heavy bolt means flintlock-tier delay between trigger pull and actual firing plus significant rocking and the feeling of "double recoil", where upon sear release the bolt kinda tries to stay in place due to inertia and push the rest of the gun against your shoulder. It's a lot like firing an original Uzi and takes some time to get used to.
PPSh on the other hand is crude as fuck, kinda heavy and nowhere near as handy as the PPS, esp. with the drum. Safety is a useless afterthought and there's no way how to carry the gun in a safe, yet quick to use manner. Easy to strip and clean, just expect cuts and scratches from countless burrs. Handles better than expected, shoulders and points well, good cheek weld thanks to the rifle-style stock, just never sure where to put my support hand. Light bolt means eyebrow-raising ROF, but also very short delay between trigger press and shot, this plus the overall weight makes the gun feel more like a closed bolt. I can definitely shoot the papasha better than the PPS. All in all a decent gun for infantry if you can accept NDs as part of your life. Oh, and by the way, contrary to popular belief, drum mags are easier and quicker to fill than PPSh banana mags, just can't do that on the move.

Tl;dr: the PPS does everything better than the PPSh except the actual shooting. Won't feel undergunned in '45 Berlin with either one of them.

I have a weapon for your rear area if you know what I mean

No they aren't at all. 43 has a very slow fire rate compared to the 41
