It's cool as shit, it's very plesant to shoot, it will do great with teaching you fundamental pistol shooting, and pistol shooting is much harder and more technique-dependent that you think if you never had one before, you have to shoot hundreds of rounds to be a semi-decent shot. As a bonus, the ammo is dirt cheap, the cheapest there is. And this will not be a gun that will end up at the bottom of your drawer, you will come back to it if you buy fancier shit too. There are some downsides though>it's not useless for self and home defence like some here think, but it's far from the best. This caliber is weak and, as i mention below, prone to jamming>this kind of ammo is prone to jamming, you will have to clear a stuck case more often than with most ammo types. Not really dangerous or time consuming on a range, but can be a bit annoying. You would also have to clean and lube your gun a bit often i'm afraid>some guys, like me, enjoy the "violent" part of shooting, meaning loud bang, bright flash, strong kick, and some guys don't. You will have none of it with this gun, which will help you preserve your hearing, focus on fundamentals and if you ever want to take your girlfriend/kid/elders shooting this will be a great gun to give them

If you want to get good and get into shooting, get a basic 9mm handgun you could carry if you needed to: Beretta 92, CZ 75 variant, Glock 19 or 17, or any clone of any of these guns. All of those will be fine and can last a lifetime. Handgun training has far more carryover to rifles than the reverse, so doing this will enable you to build a foundation. B. If you just want to protect yourself/your family and don't want to practice, get a cheap 556 AR.C. If you just want to have fun, there's no use asking for advice until you've narrowed it down to a few candidates, that's a personal/aesthetic thing. Do not get a gun in a caliber other than 556 or 9mm unless you're consciously going with this option.

They're almost as good for home defense as a rifle or shotgun (yes, theoretically a rifle is a better weapon but in practice anything that goes 'bang' will be enough for 90% of scenarios you'll find yourself in) and they give you the option to conceal carry (even if you don't plan on carrying regularly it's worth having the option if your town gets hit by a hurricane or bout of peaceful protestors). If you want the most practical option, get S&W M&P or PSA Dagger in a carryable size. You could get a Glock but frankly the M&P is a better gun and the PSA is a Glock but cheaper.You've said you're not all that interested in practicality though so feel free to get whatever pistol catches your fancy. Maybe that's a revolver, maybe a Beretta, whatever.
