Is it possible to sharpen the Benchmade SOCP dagger? Or is it too thick of a profile?

You can sharpen anything if you're determined enough. Sharpening daggers is a bitch though. Literally twice the work of a single edge.

any thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

will take into consideration.
I'm very pleased with the Spyderco Sharpmaker, it made all my knives shaving sharp. I'm going into unfamiliar territory using it freehand on this thiccboi.
I'm content to go little by little as I did with my now scary sharp Military, but also content to have it be dull-edged. You can't get duller than how it came. I fear I've rounded the tip just a little bit through just a few mistakes sharpening. The edges are sharper than they were. I'm not about to break out the diamond stones, I'm fine with (sic) chipping away at it.
>>
I have the SOCP dagger and I sharpened it. It’s very fat and was hard to do tho.

I'll wait for someone to put some effort into a knife thread and post in that one.

this. I like the Sharpmaker, it's very beginner-friendly, it can sharpen many things, it easily packs up to store in a drawer or with your outdoor gear or whatever else. But both grades of stones that it comes with are quite fine, which means it sucks for a knife that's very dull or has a garbage edge from the factory.

I need something to defend myself from feral niggers and I can't walk around with a gun.

>>61868023
Yeah if you need to re-profile or sharpen an extremely dull or damaged edge, you need the diamond or CBN stones or you'll be sitting there forever. A cheap stopgap is to binder clip some coarse sandpaper around the stones and strop up instead of cutting down.

Any relatively "name-brand" dagger that's not some QXBANGBUY Amazon chinkshit will probably be fine just for jamming into something that's attacking you.
>>
>>61862975
It's a little daggery thing, so the angle of the very edge doesn't matter a whole lot. Not like you're going to be slicing carrots with it.

I'm sure you're aware as the reply stated it's not meant for that and it's a pokiboi not a cutter. If you ever get the chance to jam it into someone just pull down with all your force im sure it'll cut something. But it's made to prison shank and stab multiple times (aka stabs are worse than cuts)
>>
>>61872084
No shit genius
>>
>>61872084
I got it a little bit sharper than it came and with a little attention on the tip, I think that's as sticky pointy as it came again. I can cut paper, not shave hair at all, with the edge (very carefully) now. So, it's functionally better. As a sharpening n00b, I get a little afraid of getting carried away and fucking it all up. It's hard to know just how sharp it could get with how thick it is, but also, my other knives needed more time sharpening than the I've given the socp and started out sharper.
IDK what the exact motivations are behind the dull edge whether it be safety for the user in a scuffle, legality, if it's moot because it can't really be sharpened anyway, etc. "It's meant for stabbing" which many say isn't the best explanation because if you can have sharp edges, why not?
I appreciate the knife discussion. Sometimes, there are details and questions I have that aren't covered anywhere on the internet.

hello anons, I recently was gifted this old knife, I can't find any markings on it at all to tell me who made it or what kind of steel it is but I can't get the damn thing to take an edge. anyone got any ideas. pics will be related. even just what kind of steel it might be would help. I've got nothing to go on.

just a regular whet stone or how ever it's spelt. I tried one of those stupid ceramic kitchen knife sharpeners as well. if it is Damascus as other anon said is there a certain type of sharpener I should get?
>>
>>61872302
>Damascus as other anon said is there a certain type of sharpener I should get?
that doesn't matter, damascus just means two types of steel mixed together in a visually apparent way.
It looks like a quality knife.
Sharpening's a bitch. I learned in boy scouts to use a whet stone and they taught us if the edge doesn't reflect light from head-on, that that's sharp. But you can get much sharper. Don't use pull-throughs, they don't get a knife sharp enough.
The basic things of sharpening are removal of material: a consistent angle, going from rough grit to fine grit, making sure the sharpening you are doing on each side actually meets each other at an apex, and not rounding off the tip. I don't have the skills to dial in and keep a consistent angle on a whet stone, so I got a sharpmaker.
>>

>>
>>61872419
>It looks like a knife shaped object made to be sold to idiots and tourists.
That. The workmanship sucks, the materials suck, the steel looks like it isn't properly hard and was left sitting in battery acid to highlight the pattern. There's also the odd mismatch: why make a fancy pattern-welded blade only to use the shittiest and most plain of rivets on the handle? That looks 100% like something off the streets of India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh.
>>
>>61872406
it's pretty old man, I doubt it was made in paki
>>

Yea no shit. So the whole "can I sharpen it" question is also a no shit. You can sharpen a rock long enough for it to cut something but it's also retarded and a waste of time when you could get a knife with an edge on it.

It's almost a 1/4 inch by 3/4 inch decagon on the blade like if the top and bottom of this pic were the edges, so wondering if sharpening would be a futile effort seemed like a good thing to wonder to me.
>>
>>61872886
and I have plenty of knives with edges on them. the only reason not to have an edge on this is for the safety of the user. After a full sharpening, it barely feels sharper than it was although it is, so I'll take my chances with the hand slippage issue.

there is a belief that if a stabbing weapon is too sharp on the sides, it will cut into bone. if it cuts into bone, it can get stuck. if it gets stuck, you can lose it or it can break as you try to free it. so the theory goes for that reason it's better to have an edge that will simply glance off bone. whatever it encounters is in the path of the blade is still going to get torn up. the blade is also less likely to chip which again is a liability for getting stuck.

the SOCP is basically just for cops and LARPers, i find it funny that someone would try to reprofile it to make it le epic cardboard cutting EDC

>>
>>61878012
I'm not going to be using it for cutting tasks. I didn't have to reprofile it, just went with the edge it already had (it was higher than 40 degrees inclusive.) The edge came looking like it was sharpened and then purposefully dulled on a brick.

Why do you want serrations? If it's not for some specific use case, you're probably better off with just a plain edge.

on bladehq itself you'll find better deals than that one. like the Thin Red Line /Thin Blue Line special edition variant of the Endela (pictured), Delica and (for a little more) Endura. They're functionally identical to the regular one, just have that laser marking on the blade and a bit of color on the inside of the handle. sure, they don't have a black coating on the blade, but that's gonna wear down and scratch anyway and look like ass. It's NOT worth paying a premium for a coated blade.
Not all that long ago, you'd have gotten tenacious for like 25 bucks, at that price it's a good knife. (8Cr13MoV is a perfectly usable steel btw, just nothing special these days) . Or a Delica for like 50-60, when it was still a somewhat budget option. But Spyderco increases their prices every year and have long since left the realm of reasonable prices with many of their items. in Europe it's even worse.
>>
>>61878052
its a knife that should cost 40 bucks.
best recommendation is that you look for something in D2 under 50 bucks. you could get a qsp penguin, sog terminus, buck 110 slim select, ontario rat model 1 or 2 or the esee zancudo (made by the same guy who made the ontario rat 1 and 2)
but dont waste too much money on entry level knives.
get one that cuts, is durable and will last. because after you get that, just hop on up to the real knives like the Para2, Para3, Bugout, Ritter Hogue ect.
these knives are expensive. but worth every penny.
there are better options than the tenacious. i love spyderco, but thats poor gucci right there.
>>
>>61878486
also dont go serrated. even partial. if this is your first knife. people get serrated or partial serrated knives when they have specific tasks in mind with them
just go plain edge.

they are fine at that price point but may not actually be what you want in a knife.
its a bayonet that doesnt really attach to anything. not a general use knife

the 78 is significantly better.
81rootsaw kinda sucks and makes it more awkward/annoying to use

but it should be fine as a fixed blade for that price right?
>>
>>61881427
>>not a general use knife
>how do you mean?
the blade profile and thickness makes it shit for say cutting fruit, being straight long and thin makes it shit for the same reason.
guard gets in the way for carving.
its specialized towards being a bayonet.
you can use it for general tasks but its annoying.
if you had a glock knife vs a coldsteel srk which is in that same price range the srk is more neutral and general use.

sawback means you cant strike a ferrorod

$10-$20 on Amazon depending on the tides. I recommend this because of the sheath, which not enough people put much thought into. Even if you can reasonably expect to use a weapon then most of what you'll be doing is carrying it.
>>
>>61881477
>>61881487
I see, so it's not good for cutting, carving or chopping?

guess I should ask for a recommendation for a 30-50$ fixed blade general use knife that is good for cutting and some chopping
>>
>>61881597
>I see, so it's not good for cutting, carving or chopping?
you can do them but a bunch of other knives are better at those tasks. if all you own is the glock knife you can try but the second you use another knife you think why was i doing the the hard way for no reason.
the glock knife is good at being a bayonet, but you cant actually put it on anything. it is specialized. the things that make it a good bayonet make it a shitty bush knife or general knife.
>>
it will cut its steel you can sharpen it. i said for cutting fruit its bad because its thick. for example you want your chef knife to be thin for nice cuts through fruit but you arent going to baton a kitchen knife through a tree. everything is a compromise and specialized for certain tasks.

its bad at carving because the blade profile and general shape gets in the way.
this doesnt mean you cant do those tasks.

the glock knife specializes in being a bayonet

just get an srk for a cheap generic do it all knife

Remember:
1. Fixed-blade knives are better for fighting than folding knives and are usually cheaper too.
2. Serrated edges are highly overrated; you'll hate owning one when it comes time to sharpen it, so don't get those knives that are half serrated either.

Look at these cheapo knives that might help you in a pinch and won't be missed if you lose it:

nah they are everything you want in a bayonet except for the fact they dont attach to anything but thats the guns fault for changing later.
its light, thin, and durable.

the issue is this dude doesnt want a bayonet. he just thinks he does and thinks he can force a bayonet into a do everything knife, but its a bayonet.

>>61886081
to give context an ak bayonet is roughly 50-52 hrc
m7 53-58 hrc
a m9 is 54-57 hrc
everything you complain about is what makes it a good bayonet. its specialized towards being a bayonet.

>>
>>61887001
Properly tempered 1095 can get to 60 HRC or so and have no issue with breaking.
It's cheaper to leave it butter soft, but that makes it essentially useless as a knife.

the things you want in a bayonet are not the same things you want in a general use knife. how many times do i have to state this?
>>
>>61890171
>how many times do i have to state this?
Right up until a single person ever uses a Glock knife mounted on an AUG to kill someone. We both know that will never even stand a chance of happening.

The very concept is ridiculous which is why Austria doesn't even do it. Every single Austrian I've worked with has said they've never even mounted a bayonet and the Glock knife was issued as a field/combat knife. Which is of course why it's the Feldmesser 78 and not the Bajonette 78. In addition numerous other countries use the Glock KNIFE and don't issue a rifle that can even attach it as a bayonet, because it is useless as a bayonet too you clown.

How does a sawback help a bayonet be a better bayonet? Oh right it fucking doesn't. How does a tiny little blade make sense on a bullpup as a bayonet? Oh right it fucking doesn't.

Anyone know anything about kukris?

I got this for cheap at a flea market. Seller clearly didn't know anything about it. It's definitely carbon steel as it was a little rusty, and it feels very solid. Based on some quick Google Fu it seems to be styled like the dress kukri issued to the Gurkhas though I have no way of knowing if it's genuine or a knockoff. If it's a knockoff I at least think it's a high quality one.

Google Lens couldn't translate the whole inscription, but the last word is apparently "Koirala" who was a guy who served as prime minister of Nepal in the late 90s-early '00s. So I would guess it was made in that time period.

OP here. I'd advise against sharpening the socp unless you really know what you're doing unlike me.
After it was barely shaving sharp, I went and tried to flatten the convex edge I had created all the way to the tip.
my results:
I. new edge profile
II. new side profile (facing the butterfly)
III. sharpened edge profile
IV. sharpened side profile (facing the butterfly)
as you can see, I removed the double bevel one way, but rounded the tip the other way.
I put notebooks under the sharpmaker to hit the angle but somewhere along the line accidentally put them in the wrong spot under it, laying back the angle. The edge is back to about as sharp as when I started.
Sure, it can probably be fixed some rainy day but I don't have the knowledge, experience, time or skills to do that at this time. I bought a new one and won't be fucking with the edge. $117 mistake.
I was touching the tip of the sharpened one and it's still sharp, but less than perfect and not as pointy as the new one.
both came with the tip ground a little off-center like in figure I.

ESEE Jaraca. It's a copy of Ontario's made by Condor because the guy who designed Ontario's kukri jumped ship after the aerospace nerds ran the company into the ground because they didn't know what knife people wanted.

It's like one hundo and you can film yourself breaking it intentionally then post the video to BF and ESEE will still replace it.

if you are using the shit out of your knife, get the Para 3 because of the ergos + CruWear is a great tough steel. but the Bugout is a better EDC and nicer knife. you can do all the same shit a Para 3 can do but it's significantly smaller/lighter (while providing the same edge) and in the case of that model, it's undeniably going to look and feel nicer too.

Boot knife is colloquially used as a term for a small to medium sized GTFO me knife, often concealed. I agree that actually keeping a knife in the boot is dumb, the only time I ever did it was when I was in high school and needed maximum concealment. As soon as I was out of school my knife went into my pocket.

Hey friends, I know quite a bit about steels and shit but know nothing of whittling and carving knife brands despite doing woodworking.

Anyone aware of good brands that make thin, small folding knives good for wood carving? I'm talking 2 inches max, thin, etc. I'd prefer a good non-generic carbon steel but worst case scenario I suppose opinel is an option.
