Why not both? I have some I use as tools, and others I collect just cause I think they are neat.It's like having an every day driver car, and a fun car in the garage, it's not that complicated.

My brother is into carpentry and he has all these fucking Japanese and German tools and he will be like "oh this is for X and its special because Y but if you want to do Z with this type of wood you're gunna wanna...." There is a massive difference between a man trying to do a thing and having tools to help him do a thing and a dude putting collecting plastic that sits on a shelf on the wall. And no, the distinction between "tools" and "collecting" is meaningless because one inevitably leads to another as what you're trying to do gets more and more niche. You can have a shotgun for HD, a shotgun for pigeons, a shotgun for clays etc etc etc. As you're able to perform more tasks you will have more tools to perform those tasks.
