Being le oper8or is gay anyway. For a civilian reliability is king, and the AK is more reliable. The "obsolete" design is part and parcel with that. Older design, lower tolerances, more reliable.

At some point the only "improvements" you can make to a design is to cut corners for weight, with tradeoffs that don't pan out in the long term.
>>
>>62020864
And hunters use muzzle loaders. It doesn't make them not obsolete. Especially if you're using the military as a standard.
>>
>>62020892
>Older design, lower tolerances, more reliable.

He thinks lower tolerances is a good thing. He'll then tell you how important headspace is on aks.

I also fully expect you to tell me next that revolvers are more reliable than semi autos, and muzzle loaders are king.
>>
>>62020892
>Older design, lower tolerances, more reliable.

Why do you have an ak then? A slap gun would be best using that logic.

>>62020906
Honestly, the big thing I’ve noticed and no one fucking talks about this (probably because nu-/k/ doesn’t own or shoot guns with any regularity) is parts breakage. I own over a dozen ARs and it seems like I’m constantly having to replace stuff.
>Firing pins break
>Gas rings worn
>Gas tube cracked
>Charging handle latch busts/pin shears off
>Gas key dented
>Bolt crack / sheered
>Extractors sheering off
>Caming pin wearing down the receiver
>Receiver extension cracking
There are all things I’ve personally had to replace on my ARs. I’ve never seen that kinda parts breakage on my AKs and I shoot them just as much. In comparison I’ve only ever had to replace a busted old shitty tapco trigger, a defective recoil spring and a single bolt cuz the extractor busted and figured it was a good time to just replace the bolt as well.
>>
>>62021324
How are you spending tens of thousands of dollars shooting 12 + ARs and God knows how many AKs enough to wear out the small parts? Do you own 12+ 300 dollar ARs or something??

It depends. I don't have a 20ton press, or headspace gauges, or spare scrap metal laying around to go full fallout to fix my ak.

On an ar if anything breaks I just drop in a new part and carry on.

More importantly, this isn't even true. You can swap out parts on an AK roughly as easily as on an AR. The only thing that's different is the parts availability and that's just because ARs are more popular.

I can change the barrel with a punch set and a wrench, or change my caliber just by popping 2 pins like on an ar? Or actually supress my ak effectively without having to get a kns piston?

Unpopular but TRUE opinion:
All AKs are all basically the same regardless of manufacturer. Quality may vary but it literally doesn’t mater. The only thing that differs is the price tag. Arsenal fags and preban collectors will cope because they spent 4k on a gun that is literally the same as a WASR or PSA.
>>
>>62021723
>or change my caliber just by popping 2 pins like on an ar?
Which AR do you do this with? IIRC only the MDRX does that in anything close to a quick timeframe. How often are you changing barrels or calibers in the field anyway? Not sure why it's valuable for that to happen slightly more quickly

> Or actually supress my ak effectively without having to get a kns piston?
Yes you can.
>>
>>62021723
>>62021764
Well and I guess I should clarify; I meant just that you can easily repair an AK by dropping in new parts at home, so it's not that different from an AR that way. I'm not sure what this claim was that if you lose a part that it requires a trip to the gunsmith.
>>
>>62021764
>>62021764
You can't change uppers? And what do you mean by "in the field?" You walking to your shooting bench from your car isn't a field environment. Even if it was, guys in the middle east carried multiple weapon systems. You can carry an extra upper, you green, delta, ranger, recon, seal.
>>
>>62021820
But you need a different magwell. That means a different lower too right? The buffer tube wouldn't work the exact same either I would expect.

Again this is the MDRX's entire selling point so how on Earth is that a selling point for their system if any basic AR can do it? I think you're making shit up.

>>62021799
I'm not that anon but there are things that you can't easily do with an AK and its all related to the front trunnion or barrel.

Everything else is easy. The barrel populated parts are not easy to replace.
If your front trunnion breaks you're fucked but its not as if you'd be better off with an AR because the equivalent would be the upper receiver exploding. I have no idea how anyone would break a gasblock. of all the things on an AK thats the thing I'd least expect to break. Sure you could bugger up your front sight but theres wings to protect the sight.

Iirc kusa had a subcontractor finish a batch of rifles and the subcontractor put shotgun safeties in rifles causing issues and had difficulties sourcing decent barrels because dembts. Kusa is possibly going tits up but rumor round the akfiles campfire is that they have new management and in 2 quarters (just memeing, not a real timeframe) will come back. Kusa uses better parts than psa, and unlike psa, actually make a 100 series ak. Arms of America also has a Wbp "krink at home" variant short ak with better brace than the piece of shit the krink is equipped with.

Got my Lucky shot wood stock in for my Saiga. Always wanted to convert it but now that it looks like we aren't ever getting them again I thought I should keep it in the sporter mode since you hardly see em unconverted.

Got this 7.62 Saiga for 150 at a gun show like 10 to 15 years ago, slapped a bullet guide and trimmed the factory mag catch and have since ran a lot of regular AK rounds through it. Always wanted a Ironwood Designs set but the dude died, only other option is Lucky Shot, looks great to me but I wish the buttstock fit the receiver better. If I could do it again I'd order it unfinished and try my hand at fitting the buttstock better.

Do have a question, my original work on the mag catch is uhhh questionable at best. What are some good aftermarket options for replacing the catch?

Its not a bad gun but I don't like it. Mainly because its uncomfortable to shoot. The scope mount is too far rearward to use any of my scopes/mounts. The stock makes it hard to use the irons without smashing my face against it in such a way it breaks the seal on my headphones. I've just left the gas on setting 1 because its super overgassed. Didn't even do official full "break-in" on setting 2 because it was bruising cheek. I've shot larger rifles without an issue but the thing just wants to flip out of my shoulder. My PSL (The one that will eventually beat itself to death) is pretty comfortable to shoot. The trigger is the grittiest out of all my AK's, even my Lynx 12 has a better trigger.

I'd put up with all of it had I not paid 1200$-ish. All of the issue could be fixed with more money but I don't like it enough to "fix" it
>>

Thats a no no. its a firearm at that point and you should just buy a finished receiver or 80%
>>
>>62041431
>>62042243
I don't know why people bother with that anyway, they probably keep better records of people who buy kits and 80% lowers than people who buy firearms regularly.
>>
>>62042880
You're right. They're actually not legally allowed to track firearms but recently it was leaked that the ATF requisitioned a bunch of large credit card companies and other payment processors for data on items like

>ammunition
>firearms parts
>VPN services
>political books and other merchandise
>assorted religious materials

So they can't make a list of people that own firearms but they can absolutely (and have) made a list of everything else a firearm owner would buy. Nobody is gonna buy ak magazines unless they own an AK so the ATF/FBI just tracks that and basically knows what you have. Not a massive leap in logic lmao.

As for why people bother with flats? I don't know flats are a pain in the dick and easy to mess up and have look bad. On the other hand 80% with the rails already spot welded (just haven't had the holes drilled yet) are cool because if they came predrilled theres a good chance they wouldn't fit your kit. Ask me how I know
>>
>>62042243

tried to pretend that fixing an AK is impossible without being a gunsmith, which isn't true and something he made up to have something for an AR to be better at. Which when that fell apart somehow got spun into this argument about the AR being easier to fix because you can swap into all the boutique calibers you're mentioning. Which doesn't mean it's easier to fix if something breaks, it just means you can swap uppers. And fine, maybe it can do that, if you carry a separate entire upper, separate mags and separate ammo; but who cares? Why carry all that shit for mild improvements in performance when you could just pick a less boutique caliber the first time? I just don't see it as valuable at all, seems like barely disguised consumerism.

i guess they imported a lot more kits into the US back then. On a side note, building firearms from kits used to be a US thing only, but now it started happening here in the EU too. An italian gunsmith started building p90s with short barrels from US ps90 parts and receivers since FN couldn't be arsed to import the proper short barrel versions. Hilarious part is that the first few rifles are done, but we won't get any ammo for sale in our gunstores for at least this whole summer.
>>
>>62047527
nta, but I saw that. Best part about this is the passive aggressive meltdown some gunsmiths in the associations had from this whole thing because it immediately disproves the old as fuck fuddlore that a gunsmith in italy can't also be a manufacturer. They were simply mad that a random fatass with the 'tism for ar15s proved that most fudd gunsmith can at their best just cold blue some 12g barrels
>>
>>62046075
Upper and ammo mainly, if it fits the AR15 pattern, mags AR mags work, capacity will vary. But you're also not incorrect, broken bolt is a broken bolt don't care what upper you're running. Also, it basically is peak consumerism. one stop shop rifle platform type thing.

I didn't pay $500 for a bolt. I paid $500 for an AK-74 that I knew I'd have to get rebuilt anyway, effectively $500 for a parts kit sans bolt when AK-74 parts kits are easily $1k+ now.

>>62052866
kinda. when the european directive passed in 2015 some things improved, like the max number of guns you can own and magazines capacity, while some got worse (especially for ex fullauto milsurps that now are for the most part considered sporting guns instead of hunting)
And in 2019 they also legalized 9x19 for handguns as previously it was legal only in long guns.
Hilariously these implementations were done by the exiting left government. Salvini and the right who promised a shitload of things regarding guns maintained nothing as even the 9x19 was going to happen anyway as it was already planned to be legalized before they held office.

You can check bolt lug contact with a marker to see how much surface engagement there actually is. There are tutorials for this

Hi. I want to buy to weapons based on the AK (technically the RPK). The Molot/Vepr-12 (shotgun) and the Molot/Vepr Hunter in 30-06. I know you can't buy them in the US because of sanctions, but I'm in Europe and I might get lucky.

I investigated a bit. VEPR is a brand of MOLOT for weapons sold in the US. There is also some confusion with the MOLOT name (Molot the gun manufacturer and Molot the private company) that is clarified in this post. https://www.theakforum.net/threads/molot-vs-molot.325374/ i.e. The private company absorbed or bought the Molot factory.

And now for the question. Are recent (i.e. made by the new Molot) Molot guns of good quality?

Sorry for the long post, but if someone knows the answer, they will surely lurk here. Thanks in advance.

>>62055281
And they haven't tightend up security?
>>
>>62058097
Not to my knowledge, no. They seem to either ignore it entirely or just say they fixed it without actually fixing it.
>>
>>62049180
I just bought the parashooter volk but haven't tried it out yet. Their lifchik from apex does seem better, but I wanted something small that I could easily throw in my range bag. What complaints do you have about it specifically?

According to akqualityenforcement on Instagram, Palmetto are going to start using the correct rivets and dimpling the trunnions to the receivers soon. Which is baffling that they weren’t already doing that.
>>
>>62059928
And according to Rob Ski on Youtube, everyone should include a pack of tactical Huggies baby wipes in his EDC.
>>
>>62059928
m26 lemon grenade mentioned this in a video not too long ago. nice to get some confirmation. I wonder if they will increase their prices on aks. Might be able to score some cheap, older psa AKs.
>>
>>62059928
palmetto state armory is going to wait as long as humanly possible to not make their AKs to soviet specs haha
>>
>>62060107
Next they should fix their metallurgy and not use butter for their trunnion metal

AKs are not guitars, they are kazoos. Slide whistles at best. Possibly a vuvuzela.

My only AK is a1995 PARS Maadi. How good or bad are these? I’ve read that they have softer receivers and the FCG pin holes will egg out.

LGS nearby has a Century Arms M70 AB2 underfolder on their website that caught my eye. Are these the same as Zastava M70's qualitywide/ worth it if I can haggle the price low enough? Or just a no go because it's Century and not a WASR?
>>
Why isn't there a decent domestically available 5.56 AK with a 10-12" CHF CL barrel?

Pioneer has a 5.56 AK I think with a 11.75" barrel, and then there is the PSA AK102, but both of these are of super questionable quality, and neither is a CHF CL barrel.

How do I get a red dot on a Galil SAR kit build?
Anyone know where to get a SAR 5.56 CHF CL or at least just chrome lined barrel?

>>62023385
Cool build overall IMO
>>
>>62050345
>Lacks bump rivet
>Stock pin is 4.5mm and not the 5.5mm of the 100 series
>AKM style bolt knob
>Piston is an AKM or AK-74 type
>Gas block and FSB are pinned and not pressed into place
tbqh Anon, its more an AKS-74N than an AK-74M/AK-101 and that is fine. I honestly which they would just start calling it an AKS-74N or AK-74N depenind on the stock type and put a ribbed cover on it.
>>
>>62064318
Actually I just know, as a fact, it's superior to your AK.
>>
Want to make folding shovel for 10/63. Does anyone sell just the folding mechanism? All I can find are mechanisms + stock. If I have to buy both fine, but id rather not.

Have another ak for my dumb question.
