i like the additional height the KRAM spacer provides. its not a perfect fit because the KRAM moves it back too by design, so i reversed it; this way it raises the ACOG and doesn't move it back.

I used to want that but I think I'm good now after moving the stock in a click. Probably get called a manlet if I ever post it.

that should definitely help, I have long arms so I always have my stocks fully extended. LaRue mounts help give a little more rear bias. big fan of moving my rear buis forward to make space.
really just want a retro upper lol
>>
>>62142601
I've got the other larue mount so it doesn't help bring it back. Missed the dealz so this is the price I pay. I think you're going to like the new build it's a good length and everything about it is light and functional. I don't even care about weight but when you pick one up it's like nothing in your hands.

if you 'need' magnified optics, just get the sig red dot magnifier and run that until you can save up for an ACOG
if you want an alternative these apparently arent terrible but its worse in about every way to an ACOG or elcan

just be careful with ebay to make sure you dont get scammed or that the glass isnt cracked
personally for an ACOG id just bite the bullet and save up for a new one just so i know its new, even used ones are only like $200 off at best, usually its only about $100 off
a lot of places will do free shipping for ACOGs due to the price but used ones wont so its more realistically like $85-$165 off for used and you run the risk of it being damaged in some way

if i were you, id come up with a budget to save up for an ACOG and then split that budget in half, spend half of the acog savings on rounds to put in at the range
if you can get even better with irons, especially at longer range, then when you do pop on an ACOG you will appreciate it more and youll be a crack shot with it once you get used to it

Primary arms and vortex respectively are chinkshit like the rest but like holosun they at least try and their warranty isn't just a guarantee of failure. that being said their mounts are cheap shit and their optics aren't as battle hardened. But like I let my stupid rifle fall on concrete all the time and the zero hasn't shifted on my particular copecog (vortex spitfire 5x gen2) really the biggest thing it lacks the acog has in spades is FOV. Acog's 36.8 ft vs the spitfire's 23.3

>>62143190
I wouldn't say it's a waste. Having stuff that will last is always good, albeit I understand your sentiment. I have good ammo, a good barrel, that's it. An acog would be nice, but again I just can't spend the money on it. I would love to
>>
>>62143203
You're so much better off just saving up a little longer and getting something good than skimping out on cheap shit because you will inevitably just end up buying that more expensive thing that's actually good anyway.
Generally speaking the thing that allows you to see what you're shooting at is worth spending extra money on.

if you can't just flex on lpvocels at the range while only running irons and NEED an optic, just buy a R5 for $100 and continue saving for something good. the gap between a "middle of the road" optic and an acog is much wider than the one between the R5 and MOTR.

the mounts and the exterior housing redundancy in design are the issues. Aimpoint and Trijicon are subjected to standardized military testing that requires a level of care that catering primarily to the civilian market doesn't necessarily pay dividends. So vortex, primary arms, Holosun, etc.—midtier—their shit just isn't nearly as robust. Like yeah it won't lose zero on the back of the 4x4 on a particularly bumpy road but the lack of care in both the design and the standardized tolerances it begets means it can only handle so much abuse, with aforementioned lack of guarantee. It's a dice roll in a real combat scenario. Home defense isn't that but you WILL embarrass yourself during a TUSC sesh when they inevitably find some scenario to make you smash that shit against a barricade or something. Idk

I'm the anon that said bird in the hand, but it's important to remember whatever you consider that isn't an acog is a stopgap and should be treated as such

i already have a few decent optics like a 512 and some leopoldo and pa scopes and a few cheap dots and lpvos. i got all the cheap shit before getting the nicer stuff so i’m cool with doing the same with fixed power prisms to see how i like it. as for the meme builds, i WILL not stop. i like assembling rifles of varying quality and seeing how they perform as some have lead to me totally changing my opinion about previously conceived norms.
>>62143751
i’m totally aware that high tier optics come with a quality and robustness that is unmatched and i have nice rifles too but i don’t like to beat that stuff up. i like beating up cheap crap. one day i’ll get nice optics but i like to see which ones i like first before diving too deep into one thing. based on where i live i don’t need or like reddots too much and i found that the 512 does it for me. i prioritize lpvos and higher mag scopes and i found that out getting cheap shit first before buying my leupolds
>>
>>62143875
>totally changing my opinion about previously conceived norms

>>
>>62143822
Eye relief is just about twice as long on an elcan.
ACOG is probably better to get since it's lighter so if you end up putting a thermal on it like an RH25 it's going to be less piggy.
Only reason not to is if you really care about passive aiming otherwise you can use a top or canted dot.

the eye relief IS bad however the FOV is enormous so you don't have to utilize the full eye relief. you can pull back slightly and still use it. I have one on the Scar and it's still fine under .308 recoil

Specter DR is an amazing optic. Eye relief is good however there is pretty bad ring-out or scope shadow, whatever your favorite term. if you're off center slightly it'll blackout. it loves to be perfectly centered in your sight picture.

>I like beating up cheap crap
Translation:
>I know if I spent more money I'd have things that would last me but I am a low impulse dopamine starved gunsoomer so I'd rather break something so I have an excuse to buy something again.
I get the whole idea behind trying something lower tier and seeing if you will actually use it but that tends to apply to something that's very niche.
A Vortex prism is not going to give you the same user experience as an ACOG so it's a really bad representation of the concept.
A better example would be like spending $4-500 on a chink scope like an Arken or Athlon and figuring out if you'll actually be doing all that long range shooting before dropping $3,000 on some flavor of Night Force.
The cost of a PA 3x prism is ~$300.
The cost of an ACOG is ~$1,000
A used ACOG goes for ~$800
It's mathematically better to just buy the ACOG and take a loss on it than it is to buy the PA first.
You could also just buy a used ACOG instead.
>>
>>62143995
obviously he's buying from at least a reputable brand so they'll replace his chinkshit if it breaks. So he'll end up with two optics in the end and that ain't so shit
>>
>>62143981
If you're incapable of expressing what the issues actually are you're an un-ironic fag instead of the normal ironic fag. So, will you actually answer the question or reveal that you actually suck cocks?
>>
>>62143650
I stand by buying a cheap holosun, beating the piss out of it until you've saved enough for the main optic you want. Then you'll have an optic for new builds as placeholder. My buddy hates his $300 holosun while I love my hs403b and people love shooting it.
>>
>>62143995
what exactly is the user experience difference? The fov? He will absolutely see the difference and will notice the lack of fov on the vortex prism for example. Genuinely curious cuz I've only recommended acogs to my buddies as one would and it's not like I'm seeing in fucking 4d when I'm running them vs my poortex at home. Obviously it's better, obviously, but I'm curious if I'm missing something. Clarity? Fov? Durability? we went over all that already

The glass, clarity, FOV, durability, and fit/finish
Without looking at the specs of the vortex i know it costs twice as much as the PA so I would assume you're getting better glass with it.
Personally I'd just jump up to an ACOG and skip the vortex since it's not that much cheaper >>62144093
They're different things for different jobs.
LPVOs really shine in match shooting with varied target distances. You can also just throw it on 6 power and use an offset dot for the closer stuff.
ACOG shines on a fighting rifle where durability, weight, and FOV are all of prime importance.
ACOGs aren't gong to give you any shit and you're not going to be running and gunning with 4x so the eye relief isn't a huge deal.
Probably nice to put a thermal in front of too without totally bogging down

mainly aspects like durability of cheap optics, barrel profile and length, lower quality.
>optics
some cheap lpvos and dots really surprised me. i bought an athlon 1-4x like a decade ago and i pulverized it over the years. the battery finally stopped working and it doesn’t hold zero but it gave me a good 5 years and many drops. same thing with a burris rt6 that’s still running just fine and that was my first lpvo. i have some shitty sig dot i forget the model (not the msr) but i bought it on sale for like $100 and it’s still fine and seen a decent amount of abuse.
>barrels
buying cheap barrels to test profile, finish and length/gas has really opened my eyes to see the limitations and advantages on each. for instance, pencil profile i thought was useless but it turned out to be pretty good and poi not bad depending on finish. it also confirmed that there is nothing better than quality chrome lined barrel.
>lowers
as long as it’s not a lemon it really doesn’t matter unless you prefer ambi controls which i’m a righty so i don’t. sure mag switches are a half second longer but idc.

I don't understand why people like the fine crosshair so much. The BDC portion of the reticle is already made up of fine crosshairs, and that's what you're gonna be using for precision/distance shooting
So imo the only point of a fine center crosshair is for shooting tight groups on paper at 25yds (what most rifle shooters do) or if you're a retard and dial your BDC-equipped prism optic for elevation.

>>62144172
yeah that would be true but I got my vortex optics on a student discount and PSA sales. I'm never gonna argue that the acog is better and it's worth it to save for it because it isn't *that* expensive but I do disagree with the assertion that the gulf in quality/experience is so drastic that the meager price difference renders all copecogs not worth touching. I wouldn't agree with that, circling back to my earlier argument here >>62143674
I think you have the money to waste there isn't too many reasons not to get one as a stopgap to go shooting with a bdc at range with a carbine, and instead of saving 2 months for an acog, save 4 months and have the acog and the shitcog to put in the parts bin for a beater upper. I agree with >>62144078

if you had no optic and were scrounging money, I would agree that not saving for an acog and buying something else would be stupid. Because yes you will not be gaining anything from that as you won't be shooting anyways

Depends on the firing schedule and barrel profile and cleaning schedule, but assuming a low rate of fire one might expect for the usecase ur describing, somewhere between 8,000-12,000 rounds. 8,000 would be never cleaning, high rate of fire, with real barrel burning ammunition/cartridges. I was gonna give a lower end but we are talking about 5.56 so

I'll look into that, thanks. Anybody I try to watch videos about mk12's either uses vortex or the OG leupold, and considering I know nothing about MPVO's I'm a bit lost
>>
>>62144244
Not the crosshair itself but the dot in the center of it. More for being able to get a tighter group which is going to help you out with the rest of the BDC.
It's not that big of a deal. Something like a Vortex Razor 1-6 is plenty good enough. I would just like an option that has more durability in mind but the market doesn't really see a need to do that so I'll just stick with the elcan and if I want more magnification than that I'll go up to an actual scope.
>>62144252
I don't agree with the concept of a beater upper in the first place though.
I firmly believe in a less is more approach and just having 1 or 2 good carbines and a good gas 308 or 6.5 and calling it a day and pursuing other things like night vision because even if you're just a hobbyist shooting at night is still cool.

i just like owning and shooting my rifles and don’t mind acquiring cheap stuff from time to time before i buy something in the same category of better quality.

On the other hand I blame people like Lucas botkin for making having a variety of niche firearms as well as your 'duty' stuff seem stupid or childish, because we have to take this seriously like a 'job' otherwise it's consumerism. Missing the point desu

motherfuckers will do anything for an ACOG but save up for one. Or they'll want an ACOG, not be able to afford it, then, over the course of 2-3 years buy 2000 dollars worth of LPVOs, prisms, and dot/mag setups to "experiment with".

I bought a set of leapers "accu-sync" 45-degree flip-up sights. Conclusion: get sturdier back-up sights than this if you can afford it and they fit on your rifle. If you're stuck with 45 degree due to not being willing to remove an optic, maybe MBUS pros or Troy. If you can have all your sights up top, just use standard A2 style sights if you have the room.

They're kind of flimsy in terms of repeatability. Yes, out of box they seem like they'll reliably detent close enough to the same "up" position every time, but there's places for grit to accumulate that will eventually get in the way of that. Further, there's a "posi-lock" plunger that's supposed to lock the towers in the up position. With enough grit in the mechanism, this plunger will not be adequate for this task. All it does is prevent the towers from going back over the detent to the "down" side, and there's enough slop that the towers could conceivably get knocked back by a barricade and stuck at half-mast if there's sand in the hinge.

Maybe they're good enough to do work out to 100, and maybe they're imprecise in ways that don't really affect POI that much, but I think you'd have to baby them to get repeatable performance out of them.
>>
>>62144247
It's better to get the sub 900 dollar urgi upper that 9 hole reviews said is equally ngmi in performance.
>>
>>62146508
Just do it anon, even if you don't like it someone will buy it secondhand for basically full price. If you lose more than like 200 bucks flipping an ACOG you're doing it wrong.
