Don't know if Nipponese Howa-1500 rifles are available in Kiwiland, but they're usually very good value for money. Solid rifles. I'd recommend them to anyone looking for a good bolt gun. They come in short-action versions for intermediate cartridges like .223Rem too.

a .223 takes your practical target range out to 400 meters or so from .22 LR's 100 meters
if you have the range to shoot at those distances it's worth it
