Not strictly on topic, but I think I remember originally talking about it with anons here not prg and after 7 long months after 5 long years I might finally have the barrel this week. If so and no further issues will post here as well. Almost feels unreal.

Probably sounds retarded but don't want to jinx it until arrival, paranoid at this point. But nothing special honestly, just a quality steel 300wm with a few customizations like letting me direct thread my suppressor. After a fair amount of research I decided I didn't want to go carbon this time around, nor any more exotic caliber. Also didn't go for that new 400modbb steel despite it looking interesting, though some of that is just because they seem to never have supplies. I already had a bunch of 300wm. In another year or two I'll reevaluate, but at least I'll have the gun and kit. Swapping a barrel and maybe bolt/mags isn't a huge deal.

anyone else strongly considering 6.5cm brs now? ammo prices have plummeted to a surprising degree, not quite as cheap as 308 in the truly low end but almost identical for decent grade stuff let alone better and still more accuracy all around. 308 still has some cool short range fun niche loads like frangible but otherwise while 6.5 started more as an accuracy cartridge if its the same price its interesting.
>>
>>62436014
Largely wasted under 700y and a 2500rd barrel life isnt great but I got a PRS anyway
>>
>>62436049
>and a 2500rd barrel life isnt great
Really? I've never heard of a barrel life that short for 6.5, 3500-4000 is more the mark. 2500 sounds like one of the newer more aggressive cartridges, the PRCs or the like. And even then barrel life discussions always need an asterisk, because they're typically made by the standards of PRS shooter where when a barrel goes from 0.3moa to 0.6moa it's eol. In a hunting or general BR context though 2-3moa is often just fine, I've seen plenty of dudes talking about retiring a fancy 6.5 barrel to a hunting/practice/fun gun and pushing through 7000 rounds.

It's definitely less life then 308 but I don't think it's radically less. But yeah barrel cost would be a consideration.
>Largely wasted under 700y
Depends on the gun, some do better with it. And you get somewhat lower recoil regardless I suppose.
>>
>>62436159
Itll still shoot but competition shooters are replacing barrels at 2-2500. 4k for battle rifle accuracy is probably.. accurate.
>>
Is it just me or does the PTR get filthy as fuck. I only put like 30 rounds through mine the other day and the amount of carbon and stuff in it was crazy. Maybe its the ammo..

Its a (delayed) blowback firearm. They are the real kings of shitting where they eat. If I ever get another PTR or the CA-3 I am just gonna buy a shit ton of brake clean and hose the rifle out outside when I get home from range trips, the proceed with normal cleaning.

The receiver heel and underside of the barrel where it meets the receiver were the worst spots and I think the pitting there is pretty permanent. The upside is the barrel ended up being a 61 dated Winchester and the bore is clean so even with the grungy exterior I’d still rather have this than a commercial non chrome lined Springfield barrel
>>
>>62441290
how do you like the mlock extension?
>>
>>62441506
It's quite nice. I wanted something to extend the surface area of the SCAR without going too heavy and the Lancer carbon fiber rail has been great. Also it takes about 4 mags before the handguard starts to get warm to the touch, which is really good considering how close to the gas block it is.
Prevents my hand from getting the ol spicy barrel, which used to be my biggest issue with the SCAR

I'm waiting for them to realize it's not what they wanted, then turn around and buy into 6MM arc. We'll see what happens. These things take years. The Scar went into service in 2008 and it wasn't until 2011 they decided it wasn't what they wanted. Keep in mind these things are never said out loud. The Gov'mint just stops ordering and changes logistics. FN never said, "whoops we failed with the Scar 17, oh well."

I took it apart to see what he did, but I didn't take pictures (unfortunately). However, from old KTOG posts about adjustable triggers, I found that he did perform the same trim on the sear that they did. I circled around the trim, and the thin line is pretty much where the sear is now.
The pull isn't much lighter, but it definitely breaks a lot earlier than before. It's pretty much a heavy one stage trigger now, which isn't too bad for about $90 and a week turnaround.

For those wondering, you can buy a Tortort receiver plus (nitrided) barrel and rail from Riley for $694 including shipping. Pretty cool that they're not sticking it to us on price. A receiver direct from tortort is usually in the $600 range. I'll be about $1055 for my build including shipping and rivets. Not too shabby for milled build. Now I need to decide how to finish it. I'm leaning towards rust bluing but I've always wanted to have an entire rifle nitrided, I might try contacting my local nitride shop and seeing how expensive that would be.

Write Lübe a mail for one of these triggers if you want one imported, the same goes for WIDE HANDGUARDS, FURNITURE and other shit you just can't find anywhere else.

Lübeanon, widely renowned for providing the best lube around for /k/commandos by far, stepped up and offered to just proxybuy and ship them through Korbo's LLC in Arizona, he was offered an extra cut for his services but refused and preferred to do it for free. Got impatient and took it to an indoor. Glad I did now. Found out the barrel is under timed by about 2-3 degrees I'd say. It's an inch and a half off center at 25y even after bottoming out the rear sight. Confirms the bench vise snapped before I fully torqued it down. Bolt hold open also isn't always working, but I think it's from the top being too shallow to capture to bolt well. Other than that, it ran flawlessly after dialing gas. No malfunction firing.

what do you mean by "best"?

The PTR is probably the most accessible if you don't want an AR-10. The FAL has the best aesthetics, but it's a heavily flawed gun and I wouldn't recommend it unless you specifically want a FAL
>>
>>62496103
Maybe consider a used/on sale MDRX, since you don't have other 308 guns you may have a use for the caliber conversion capability of it.
>>
>>62497077
ive heard the ergos are shit on the ptr and would need some big aftermarket parts to compensate... what makes the fal flawed? it looks cool
>>
>>62497403
If you do get an MDRX as this anon suggested, order vibratite vc3 and retorque the barrel screws and the screws on the ass end. Also change the stock muzzle device to something else - it'll improve accuracy as the stock muzzle device somehow has a weird harmonic effect with the barrel and makes it open up drastically a few shots in (like 8 MOA spread from bench rest)
>>
>>62497423
>ive heard the ergos are shit on the ptr and would need some big aftermarket parts to compensate...
>what makes the fal flawed
>I've heard
Any answer is in the same catagory that you dismiss the PTR for, so what difference why the FAL is flawed, you've already heard it is.
>>
File: FNs.jpg (1.5 MB, 2268x3024)
1.5 MB
1.5 MB JPG
>>62497423
The ergos are fine on the PTR, it's just kind of clunky and slow with the ergonomics. Biggest issue with its ergonomics is the length of pull, but every time I've taken friends out shooting, they love the PTR more than anything else.

The FAL has a lot of problems on a couple different levels. For a casual shooter, the biggest issue is probably the finnicky mags - FAL mags are expensive and tend to not be perfectly interchangeable like you'd see with ARs or the PTR. Sometimes you'll luck out with a gun that works with every mag, other times you'll have a handful of surplus mags that are tough to fit into the magwell right. At least in my experience, the problem mags aren't useless, they're just annoyingly hard to lock in.

As far as the design goes, the tilting bolt design isn't great for accuracy (though it's not really a problem for the average shooter), and the dust cover design means your options for optics aren't great. The gas system is adjustable, which means you usually have to spend your first range trip dialing it in, and the system may require you to change the setting depending on the ammo you're shooting.

Aftermarket parts are also harder to come by with the FAL compared to the PTR, and they're almost always more expensive. Adding to that issue is that there's two different standards for FALs, and there's a lot of dubious-quality FAL builds on the market.

Assuming you've got a good build (DSA is fine), the FAL is a lot of fun and a little easier to shoot than the PTR. But I wouldn't consider it to be good enough to be worth the effort unless you specifically want a FAL.

tl;dr
if you just want a .308 rifle that's not an AR-10, the PTR is better. If you specifically want a FAL, get a FAL.
>>
>>62497403
>Maybe consider a used/on sale MDRX, since you don't have other 308 guns you may have a use for the caliber conversion capability of it.
I have an MDRX and I like it a lot, but the WLVRN is overall a significant improvement/refinement, so definitely be looking for a serious discount. 10% off or whatever doesn't cut it, if I sell my MDRX it'll probably be for at least 35% off, even to cover whoever buys it getting that DT upgrade package with some to spare.

The caliber conversion is also somewhat less cool than it was before the wlvrn, because DT mishandled the whole thing and irritated aftermarket folks (who were tiny in number). That used to let you get every single caliber under the sun practically which was really neat, live in a straight wall state and want a 350legend or 450bush decent bullpup battlerifle? You could. It looks like that has shrived up though so while you might still find someone custom for extra money you're more limited to official kits.

I'm glad yours works well, mine did not. Apparently PTR had some guys in QC that were fired. Idk how many surplus parts they used but some of the mag catches were out of spec. The CA3 being mostly surplus parts is actually a positive thing in my opinion. If PTR was recreating these parts I can see how they fucked up and had issues with the rifles.

I may have gone on a diatribe for the better part of an hour without actually telling him which company/brand to use, and subtly recommending a bolt action. The sig tread would be my recommendation for an ar10, but a 16" barrel is not ideal for hunting. The good news is that we were both on the clock so he at least was compensated for listening to me rambling on about state specific laws, pros and cons of bolt and semi, and cost vs performance.

I got a PTR a while back, but I had all kinds of problems with it until I got an HK parts bolt to put in it. The thing is, the bolt that came from PTR is in spec, but doesn't work reliably at all, while this HK parts bolt is WAY out of spec, my bolt gap is like .007 or something, but it works like a charm. Also the extractor is WAY loose, but whereas I had problems with the PTR bolt extracting rounds, I have never had an issue with the HK parts bolt.

I think the last time I measured it with the PTR bolt it was a healthy .016. The biggest issue though is soft primer strikes. Almost every other round. Given I was using some shit steel case styff, but the HK parts bolt went through it no problem.
>>
>>62532153
I don't know how much you've already spent but you have two options I think.

>buy + sized rollers to get your HK bolt in spec (you're supposed to replace the roll pin too but I haven't done that)
or
>buy new firing pin and spring for your PTR bolt

pick the option that's cheaper. Get the rollers from RTG because HK parts sells the same shit for 2x the price

>Promote us and we'll give you money/ammo/guns
>lol k
Guns are expensive, ammo is expensive. I don't even get why you fags hate Guntoobers so much, as if someone is forcing you to buy shit. Guntoobers provide the community a valuable service by promoting cool guns, optics, helmets, plate carrier and more, spreading general information on the hobby. Don't watch Garandthumb, go watch Paul Harre- oh....
>>
Most people now know SDI is a scam, but what about AGI and MGS? Are they worth it? I know that can be subjective. Guns are fascinating, and I'd like to expand my hobby to include building.

I've been looking at ADM Recon mounts, and I really like their return to zero capability from the reviews I've seen. Just need to decide how much weight I'm willing to deal with. Have you had any issues with the Aero ultralight?

AGI is a scam, dunno the other one. Any "gun smithing school" is a scam. The most complex skillset for building the crazier kits or custom stuff is welding or lathe operation. Anything else is more or less like wrenching on a car. Internet has all you need to just go self-taught, just about all gunsmiths are anyway. Any with a degree have one in machining or engineering, some parallel field, not specific to it.

that is a nice looking gun you got there.
Does it shoot with the 36 degree locking piece even if it's unsupressed?

I've read that it would tame the recoil even more.
I would love to get my hands on one, but in germany they are unoptanium. But you can get the shitty 45 degrees all over the place.

Also already got the recoilspringbuffer, the triggerpack and the extended safety from Bill Springfield and they are great. But the Lockingpiece and maybe a HK21 Chargringhandle are the missing parts here for my SAR
>>

On top of the charging handle guide tube

>>62538511
It cycles fine unsupressed, but having put thousands of rounds through it before the swap, I can definitely notice the change in cycling speed. It used to be a lot easier to source parts for these until every youtuber decided all at once they were going to do a series on them. I bought the 21e charge handle years ago, in fact I think it was one of the first upgrades I put on the rifle, but the locking pieces dried up and I had to get a RCM repro from HKparts
>>
>>62508012
you don't need one if you get a flow-through style suppressor

Yeah I would get one 36 degree of rtg parts. They also do have the charging handle in stock. But they won't send stuff to gernany.
>>
>>62541194
It's not legal to import that stuff to Germany? Or rtgparts just doesn't ship to Germany.
If it's just rtg not shipping, somebody here would probably be an intermediate if you want those parts.

That's what I was leaning toward anyway, but a machining course won't teach you some tricks of the gunsmithing trade. The couple grand would be better put toward a welder and lather I'm thinking. The only tricky part is sifting through the garbage of stuff online to find the nuggets of wisdom. I need to clean my shop space so I can fit a lathe in there.
>>
First time in 2 years of owning my FAL shooting anything other than M80. I didn’t even know it could do this at 100 yards. In a better shooters hands it could probably do better but that’s about 2”
>>
>>62541650
90% of modern AR-10 derivatives look like gay ass race guns with goofy cut receivers and cheese graters for handguards, so I'm with you on that.
>>62542829
I'd say sifting bullshit from wisdom is easier to do here in forums and videos versus those courses, with all the people around to second guess and question if it's crap. I know for a fact AGI has some pretty bad practices in their instructional vids (using the barrel in an AK as a bucking bar for rivets, for example). There's reputable gunsmiths active on youtube and boomer forums all mostly open to just talking about it and giving you that info, except gunplumber I wouldn't bother him (he does have a book on FAL building though). Technical manuals exist too.
>>62542095
