Great news, after more than 40 years, the Frecce Tricolori will replace their aging MB-339s with the M-346 Advanced Jet Trainer, reverting the decision to equip the team with the small and underpowered M-345.
Today they unveiled the new livery designed by Pininfarina.
Also general acrobatic jet teams.

>>62492297
Why don't they use Eurofighter? Is it that bad?
>>
>>62492524
>Why don't they use Eurofighter
It's rarely a good idea to use fighters for these kinds of duties. It's MUCH cheaper to use trainers.

Operating costs are significantly lower, and it doesn't cost as much if you crash.
>>
>>62492524
The majority of military aerobatic teams use advanced trainers. The US is one of those who don't, because the T-38 is an obsolete POS with shit flight characteristics. Generally, the air forces using shitty trainers tend to go for actual fighter craft.
>>
>>62492297
>2024
>dogtooth
Grim
>>
>>62492549
and it's highly likely the next aerobatic team plane for the US will be the T-7A.

At the moment the Blue angels are using F/A-18E/F and will do so for at least another decade or two, but eventually they'll switch to a trainer more than likely.

USAF Thunderbirds are similarly using F-16s, but once those start to get taken out of service over the next few decades, they'll be switching to a trainer as well more than likely.

The F-35 and F-22, NGAD, and F/A-XX will never be used for team aerobatics as the things that make good stealth jets tend to limit aerobatic performance. They will be used for singular flight demonstrations at air shows like the F-22 and F-35 currently do.

So yeah, USN and USAF are headed towards using trainers again too.
>>
>>62492572
Yep, once they get the Redhawk, they'll likely switch over to it for aerobatics.
>>
>>62492572
>>62492594
No way Boeing and Saab need at least a decade for a fucking trainer
>>
>>62492524
putting aside 20 eurofighters for an acrobatic team is too expensive.
>>
>>62492572
>T-7A
Nah, the f16 and f18 will be used for at least 2050, making the next plane most likely a new jet trainer that doesn't yet exist
>>
>>62492676
T-38 is 50 years old and still going, in 2050 the T-7As will be ~20-25 years old and just fine for aerobatics use.

and more than likely we'll see the transition happen in the mid or early 2040s when most of the T-7As will be ~10-15 years old.
>>
>>62492360
Kind of funny that the original version of the m345, the S-211, is still in service today in flip's air force

The C-101 Aviojet is less powerful than the m345 and it's still plenty enough for the Patrulla Águila. If anything the m346 is too powerful and with the flybywire like the f16 it will force the frecce to fly like the Thunderbirds, where they can fly really close but they can't do any "throw around" manouvers or complex acrobatics

Looks like it. It's basically just an upgraded SIAI-Marchetti S.211. It's a really good trainer for phase 2 and 3 but it not suitable for large scale formation flying.

I know eveyone likes to pretend their team is the best but the benchmark has always been set by the red arrows. Royal Jordanian falcons are very entertaining too but they fly prop aircaft so tend not to be seen in the same light.

The frece tricolori and the swiss display team both fly planes without flybywire and they both fly better, more engaging routines and are more skilled.
Flying in a straight line over your inbred royals who took your guns away is not impressive.

What I love about this is that commies are having an absolute meltdown over this. They wanted to abolish the frecce tricolori over their cost and the fact they use smoke in their shows.

They will be probably still be used for lower level training until they can completely replace them with the 345 and 346. The actual PAN 339 will probably end up in museums.
>who still uses them?
pic rel, which I bet are going to dwindle as the years go by as even if a third world country is looking to purchase a cheap trainer/light attack a m345 would be pricier short term but cheaper long term as the operational costs of the mb339 are higher nowadays. I hope more private companies buy them like they had done with the l39 since it would allow civilians to give them a spin.

IMHO the red arrows and the frecce tricolori are around the same skill level. I like the italian routine more but I have a bias being half italian. The snowbirds are just ok, both the thunderbirds and blue angels and the PAF are better.
>>
>>62503564
Yeah, very obviously CGI in the first clip, but 100% confirmed CGI in this 2nd one.

The pilots are all identical and don't look around at all, which seems odd for close-formation flying.
>>
>>62503564
Jesus that's a sexy plane.
>>
I had the chance to put on an helmet of a M346 here in Poland. The guys there told me the plane can be sold and set up to train from a 4th gen to a 5th gen with the use of fancy simulation softawares and helmets to train a pilot for the f35. The helmet had a video projected into your eye that allows you to have situational awareness 360 degree almost like the DAS on the f35.
It seems to me that with these new trainers you're buying more the program and the plane is just an accessory as everything is becoming digital
>>
>>62503806
still good to see the italian choose our dear Bielik
>>
>>62503806
modern trainers are basically just stripped down Gen 4+ planes, and as far as gen 5 is concerned not much changes in the general flight training, everything is gonna be about the specific stealth airframe (F-22 vs F-35 vs B-21, etc)

There is no point in making a "5th" gen trainer since 5th gen is stealth and you don't need stealth for training.

Because all acrobatic teams outside of the US understand that what is important is to maintain an aesthetic balance to their aerobatics. Also they are 10, not 4.

As a pizza person I am concerned and disappointed.

Disappointed because the mb339 was a better plane for the role

Concerned because I don't know if you can push the m346 as much as the macchi, without paying the price.
>>
>>62517977
Well, you can forget the volo folle, the lomcovak and the freefall. The FBW system wouldn't allow that. It's something that had to happen, the macchino was getting old, and no new trainer nowadays has the same amount of low speed manouverability as the mb339.
Everything is similar to the m346 like the south korean fa50 or the american one made by boeing and saab

It's not less performing. It's more performing in every aspect beside low speed flying.
It's just the nature of new trainer and fighter jets. Beside a few old prop planes the macchino was the only plane able to do all those manouvres, but the production line IIRC has been closed for a a while and making new mb339 and maintaining them would've been way more expensive.
Not to mention that they are choosing this plane also as a marketing campaing to try and sell more of them to international clients. (the m346 has been a commercial success compared to the m345) So if anything we saved millions by replacing the 339. It's sad since it's a beautiful aircraft but it was bound to happen sooner or later.
