Most modern tanks have fairly poorly protected gun mantlets, it has to do with the difficulty of balancing the gun with a bunch of heavy armor ahead of the trunnion.The challenger 2 for example only has ~200mm of steel protection on the mantlet area.I think generally it's assumed that the steel bulk of the trunnion and the gun breech can absorb a round at the expense of a mission kill.
