Hi /k/, I am looking to buy my boys a 10/22. I've owned several before, all wood stock. I'm looking at gunbroker and the wood stock 10/22s are at least $100 more than the black synthetic stock 10/22s. is there a functional difference or is just paying for the aesthetics?

You're just paying for aesthetics with wood. There's no difference weight is pretty much the same between both. The synthetic one won't look as bad, show damage, if you're buying one used and giving it to you kids, who may knock it into something or drop it.

roger that. I will buy them new. I had a bad experience with the last 10/22 I bought, it was used.

just buy old Marlin Model 60

The cheap Ruger plastic stocks are actually kind of bendy. If that doesn't bother you, then have at it.

I'm leaning towards wood, 2bh, I found a listing on gunbroker for only $50 more than plastic

thanks for the help /k/

Shittiest gun Ive ever owned. Stovepipe machine. Accurate I guess. I’ve never made it 10 shots without a malfunction with pretty much ever common ammo type I can think of. Dangerous to those unaware it can be ghost loaded. I know others have had way better luck than I but I could never

Ruger 10/22 was what I was raised on, the first gun I killed a coon with, and the first my children will be raised on. My great grandfather loved his first Marlin .22 so much, he bought another in '53 and put a 10kt gold trigger on it (it was like $50 in the '50s). The biggest thing you need to hammer home is that firearm ownership is no bullshit and has very real consequences.

Why the hell are you buying from gunbroker? Why the hell are you looking at gunbroker prices on a new gun? Get on Ruger's site and look at models to find what you might be interested in:
https://www.ruger.com/products/1022/overview.html
And then get on gun.deals and start searching model numbers. Some examples:
>Wood Stock Carbine, Model 1103 - $250
https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/736676011032
>Polymer Stock Carbine, Model 1151 - $230
https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/736676011513
>Threaded Carbine w/ Irons, Polymer, Model 31113 - $280
https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/736676311132
>Threaded Carbine, 75th edition, Polymer, comes with nice irons and pic rail, Model 31191 - ~$240
https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/736676311910
>Normal Sporter, Wood, Model 1102 - $350
https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/736676011025
>Sporter, Wood, 75th Anniversary, Model 31375 - $260 (!)
https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/736676313754

Also the difference is mostly stock quality. I bought a 31113 and while I love it, the stock was flimsy and thin just like the other models like the 1151 and likely 31191. Great model otherwise if you want to replace the stock. Would shoot fine I'm sure but it bugged me and I fully intended to replace it from the beginning. If you want a silencer I recommend checking that the front sight isn't overhanging the flat face on the barrel behind the threads or else it'll get canted and not be concentric, however I think I got the shit end of the stick with covid QC as I've never seen that complaint other than on my gun. Otherwise I fully recommend it.

Based Dad but don’t use Gun Broker. Also educate your sons on the /k/ube

Oh, also consider the compact models. Totally forgot yesterday. 16.12" barrel instead of 18" like all the other regular models.

Just check up on OAL if you ever want to chuck a folding stock on it; I feel like I remember something stupid about 16" 10/22s but I may be wrong. Anyways, using it as-is IMO it'd be a great gun for kids; the barrel is almost 2" shorter and the stock is shortened making the gun lighter and being more kid sized in general. IIRC the butt/comb piece comes off and can be changed out when your kid gets bigger and needs a longer length of pull on the stock. Saves your kid from struggling with a stock that's too long or you having to chop the stock shorter and add it back with a rubber buttpad when they get older; real easy swap, too, IIRC. Also comes with some pretty nice fiber optic sights; I don't like how they look as much as nice blued irons but considering how well I shoot with fiber optics? It's been growing on me. No threaded barrel model unfortunately.
