>you should run your AR-15 dry
>Nooooo you shouldn't overoil your AR-15
Why do neverserveds insist on this fuddlore?

keep that bitch wet

It doesn't really matter either way but it's logical that lube prevents stoppages

This particular fuddlore is a GWOT phenomenon where units would bring dry ARs on a mission. If no shots were fired or only a few shots were fired, it would be easy to wipe down the parts and hand over the weapon to the armory.
If a real gunfight happened, a lul or break in the fighting would be used for squirting lubricant into the action and fight with a wet rifle. Yeah, all the grime and dust would get caked into the rifle and make it a bitch to clean before handing the weapon off at the base. But at least it was because of a real fight.
It was just a lazy way to keep the weapon clean if you only had to let off a few shots. As usual a bit of "street wisdom" or lifehack got decontextualized and people got the wrong idea and assumed ARs perform better when dry. You'll always get more wear and tear when dry metal surfaces rub on each other, lubricant increases the lifespan of your parts. And as the video implies, overlubing is a thing because the chamber shouldn't be wet. The proper function of the rifle requires the case to expand against the chamber and this friction is accounted for in the weapon design. A lubed chamber will lead to increased bolt thrust.

Which was a retarded practice anyway because the AR has a dust cover for that exact purpose. Jarheads are literally retarded, is it even ethical to make them sign up for war ?

Sexo

>the AR has a dust cover for that exact purpose
It springs open after you fire so after the first shot you're committed
>Jarheads are literally retarded
It was actually Delta guys who came up with this. Because it's the high speed units that were expected to go in missions in an almost nightly basis. An average jarhead wouldn't get into enough action for the time to clean a weapon to make them go insane. And they were often doing helo ops which would blow shit into the action if they were firing.
And they stopped doing this when they got HK 416s. They loved the 416 not because "hurr durr M4 jams" but because it was easier to wipe down the bolt and the armorers wouldn't bitch about dirty weapons.

I can't find the fucking diagram, because Google is nothing but AI slop anymore.

You only have to put a drop of oil in each of the holes on the side of your BCG. That is their purpose, so that when you actuate the charging handle, it will pump oil through the bolt, and therefore the rest of the bcg once it heats up. So called gas holes have a dual purpose.
