Individual barrels of the same brand and construction type are going to fail with massive fluctuations in round counts. You'd need to melt dozens of barrels of the same brand and type to get usable data just for that particular barrel. Luckily for us, its been done and the answer is CL CHF.

Thanks for the info anon. I mainly shoot at SGC in the hot months and the main range at BA in the winter, I haven't been out to either of those other places. Will check them out. The only innadesert spots I know have been under fire restriction forever, so my own AR500 target is useless. Have you done any 2gun/3gun in the Phoenix area? Never met Carl, just Ian. He used to come into the shop I worked at down there as well. Just a normal gun nerd really. It was a pretty comfy competitive scene down there. Small, casual, friendly. Have been meaning to get into it again because it's better training for the ammo than just blasting at the range imo.

I don't know if there was ever a clear verdict on how it started, but people out here are retarded. It's unlikely it was started by some normal target shooting, but I would be 0% surprised if it was started by someone shooting tannerite or firing tracers into the brush. It's chaos out here - not long ago a woman died while sitting in her SUV because some retard shot over a berm.

But

Really depends on exactly what you are doing with it. If you just need to grab two radios for line of sight comms with another team then go for it. If you are expecting much else, don't. For me it's a fun toy that I'm using to learn and experiment so I know better what to buy when I go digital which is a huge step up.

Idiot, SFP is only an issue for spreadsheet warriors. At low mag you're shooting point-blank, no holdovers required. At range where you actually need it, you're at max mag. 9-12 isn't so high you need to dial it back. Besides, isn't that what you wanted exposed turrets for? To dial it in?

Only an actual mouth breathing retard can't function without FFP.
>>
>>62643213
Reticle sucks
Baseline 4x instead of 2x
Smaller objective

Yeah should have bought your recommendation of a more expensive worse optic that you’ve never used instead.
>>
>>62643252
Reticle is 100% functional. If you think you need more you need to shoot more.
A 2x you'll literally never use.
Better glass and coatings will make more of the objective anyway.
SFP I already addressed.

Go ahead though keep buying chink trash and convincing yourself it was a good decision even after it leaves you with an unusable rifle. NGMI.

>>
Athlons website is a textbook example of how to market a low quality, feature heavy brand created exclusively to part uninformed buyers from their money. Looks good on paper, absolute shit in reality, probably doesn't matter because 99% of the buyers are putting them on PSA ARs they'll never shoot.
>>
>>62643315
>just gonna aim by vibes
So your only rifle is an AR with a 3-9 SFP fudd scope?
No one is putting an Athlon on their DWOT LARP rifle. It’s just a way to start shooting out further and learning how to use the features that are also going to be found on the premium scopes that a person will eventually graduate to once they can justify spending $2k on a NF 4-16.
Dying on the hill of a 3-9 SFP scope being king is so bizarrely retarded.

That's nice anon, maybe you actually understand the value in buying well made optics. A good optic will outlast the barrel of the rifle you're putting it on. It makes way more sense to put an expensive optic on a cheap rifle than a cheap optic on anything. The optic is the highest return on investment component of your rifle, period.
>>
>>62643354

Leupold scopes suffer terribly from outdated poor performing reticles. Unironically the VX-R Patrol 3-9x Mil reticle I had covered the entire man sized silhouette target at idk, 550m, to the point that your POA precision was trash.

You don't have 10k to spend on a high-end peripheral that's meant for snipers shooting 2k meter shots.

I was gonna ask A2 if he's shot out barrels and actually crunched some quantifiable data on HOW much things like CHF or barrel contour or CL matter, like how much longer will a CHF CL last than a CL, and a CL from a melonite, and a melonite from a SS barrel. He always talks about shooting out suppressors and has implied he has shot out barrels by stating he has a pile of used ones or something, he talks about his ridiculous round counts more than even Garand Thumb. It's cool I just wish he used all that data for something and published it, would be immensely more helpful than his dudetrustmebro sermons every weekday from 8-5 on arg responding to specific comments or questions. Not efficacious for his ostensible goals

I've discussed the with him before and the simple answer is that all the barrels he's shot out are CHF/CL and he just doesn't have hard days on nitrided barrels as a result.
No one really has this data because of the ridiculous round counts it takes to collect said data.
This is very much anecdotal but he has gotten 50k on a scar 16 barrel and that is backed up by FNs preventive maintenance schedule.
On the flip side I know people that have shot out nitrided barrels at 7k.
Be the change you want to see in the world. Maybe start collecting said data and compiling it.

Good job, anon. I've been keeping close tabs on my barrels. I'll have some data for you in about 20 years when I burn out my SCAR 16.

A2 doesn't have quantifiable days or crunch numbers, he just has anecdotal experience. It's a lot of work to actually properly record data like that

I believe that one of the best bodies of evidence for the benefit of CHF CL barrels over nitride actually comes from that machine gun rental range in Nevada, Battlefield Las Vegas or w.e it is called. They had a bunch of WASR AKs with Romanian CHF CL barrels that they post sample converted as well as random US nitride barreled AR upper that they put on top of M16 lowers and IIRC the rough findings were that the AKs would go 60k, 90k, 120k rounds before keyholing while the nitride AR uppers would do 10k, 15k, maybe 20k tops.

I believe that he shot out a BCM BFH CHF CL 11.5" barrel. It wasn't completely dead, or maybe it was, but I know at the VERY least it was on the way out and had 20k-30k rounds on it. A lot of suppressor use, hard use, full auto etc. I think that it is pretty reasonable to expect a non CHF CL barrel to do worse, which is why I personally consider the UPPER limit of barrel life for a non CL barrel for a relatively tame firing schedule to be that 20k-30k mark, and if you're taking it to carbine courses or running it hard or running a suppressor, then I personally believe that number to be closer to 10k-15k.

Army studies found the difference to be marginal when both are CL

Yeah I personally have begun to put less stock in CHF than I do in CL. CL is the priority for sure IMO. I think that a lot of the preference for CHF was just by association because CHF barrels were more often than not CL also, so it wasn't clear which aspect of the barrel was responsible for the increased durability.

I'm hoping to do a Mk18 Mod 1 soonish and use a Criterion CORE chrome lined barrel.

According to the SOLGW dudes when you get barrels of the same base material (ordnance grade 4150) the difference between CL and Nitriding even begins to be splitting hairs. Someone else in the thread mentioned it but in most cases a barrel can fluctuate 30% in terms of lifespan. Now an educated guess would say that the fluctuating can probably be explained by difference in firing schedule, or even bullet jackets or even the temperature generated by one powder burn versus another.

But very few people are in the business of buying dozens of 5.56 barrels of varying construction method and shooting them until the groups with good match ammo open up two twice the original size or whatever arbitrary standard has been set after thousands of rounds.

The good news for a civilian shooter is that if your 1.5 MOA barrel new opens up to 4 MOA after ten thousand rounds, the chances of needed it beyond 50 yards are so miniscule that you have time to figure it out. Or if you have enough silver shekels to shoot out a barrel you have a second rifle or upper ready to go.
