Killing knives with wood handles give me a woodie, no pun intended. I fucking hate polymer shits.

Surprisingly pretty solid and no rattle.

Do bone handles give you a boner?
>>
>>62829061
Yes, actually. I love how primal it is. I've seen a knife with an sharp antler pommel before and about nutted myself. That was a blade made for slaying villagers and looting their property.
>>
The knife provokes a lethal response, which prevents capture. Even if your rifle and sidearm are broken or depleted, you can still kill or be killed with a knife. The knife is crucial as a last resort weapon, and the knife assures your survival or your martyrdom, preventing capture and dishonor.

It is better to die than be dishonored, let alone interrogated for information and tortured. Only those who are deeply dedicated to what they fight for will struggle with a knife until the final breath. If you are going to kill someone with a rifle from a range, that is the same on a moral level as killing up close with a knife or even your hands. One is a lot more personal and requires violence of action.
>>

Is electrical tape my fix for poor Mora sheath retention? Can I heat the sheath and smooth it?

Antler being considered bone is odd. I get that it is basically the same chemically, but a pair of bones that grow and fall off each year just seems weird.

I bought a kukri instead of a hatchet. I'm in Florida for the most part, so I don't need an axe for casual innawoods/camping. I think I paid about ~$70-75 for my Condor HD kukri (7+ years ago) so I get that it's above your range, but I enjoyed learning different techniques on how to make a large blade feel small and work for small knife tasks.

Never owned an Estwing, but that's what I would probably get myself if I wanted a budget hatchet.

I own way too many knives
>a Swiss knife, one where the corkscrew is replaced by a Phillips screwdriver, this makes people seethe for some reason
>stainless Mikov UTON knife I take with me everywhere
>shitty 20$ army shop USMC dagger type knife I bought for the sole purpose of cutting up a watermelon me and my friends bought when I left the UTON at home. Now I use it when I know I will dull the knife.
>another Swiss knife with a rounded end that I almost cut my finger off with since it has no safety
>>
>>62832254
Well I don't own a Kukri either so it'd be neat to get one. Maybe when christmas comes around I'll look into getting one, dunno if I'll get a condor like yours though cause I just don't know how much I'd use it or if I'll like it but I'll probably get one that's like $30 just to get a feel.
>>62832616

Just copped a Kershaw Iridium as an EDC knife after not EDCing anything for about ten years.

Last EDC knife I had was a Benchmade Mini Barrage that I lost rafting.

Wanted to re-buy the Mini Barrage initially but apparently Benchmades have gotten absolutely fuckspensive and basically doubled in price since I last bought one.

Heard good things about the Iridium and like it so far. Seems to be almost as good as my old Mini Barrage for less than half the price that the Benchmade goes for now.

I carry a gun but I want a knife too, preferably full tang and with a more classy not tacticool look because I don't want to get weird looks if someone sees it
size is preferably over 5 inches but not too massive
>>
>>62838936
Just buy a camp knife that fits your innawoods needs and OC SPRAY. You should always carry oc spray with your firearm anyway. Any lawful reason (in the usa) to pull out a knife on someone is the same level of drawing your firearm.

it depends on your use, if you prefer a hatchet for any tasks you might do then maybe get one.
i personally would pick a fiskars knock off because fiskars sells shit axes these days and before someone says otherwise you have an old model. Also just normal wooden or fiberglass reinforced plastic handle hatchet will do a good job in your price range. im trying to discourage you from this type of hatchet because in my opinion the end of the axe handle can unscrew or break off and there goes your entire handle, any weak spots like that or screws in an axe (unless they are forged pins which are based) are fucking stupid.
also "how it's made" had a video on this exact axe

Estwing is good quality but an all metal hatchet with a hard leather handle is gonna be uncomfortable if you have to use it much. Rubber version won't be as bad on your joints. Or something with a wood or polymer handle.

The SRK in SK5 is ~$50 new and an absolute classic, or you can pick it up in 3V from Midway for $100 if you want to splurge on a supersteel.
The Strongarm is also a solid choice and is about $90, many say it's overpriced for what it is but it's really bomb proof and personally for survival knives I'd rather have a "crappy" steel that is not brittle and easier to field sharpen over a "better" steel that is more likely to shatter and can't be sharpened as easily.
One I forgot about is the Demko Freereign which is about $120 and kind of a mix of the other two I mentioned: 5" like the Strongarm but with a rubberized grip like the SRK. I have one and like it a lot.

Post historical knives

Here's an Aztec (or possibly Mixtec) knife with a mosaic of turquoise, malachite, spondylus and other shells and precious stones, though as you can see a lot of the mosaic pieces have fallen off so some portions of the sculpted wood handle are uncovered

Too lazy to give an in depth explanation of the specific symbolism, here, but Davide Domenici has a lot of publications on Mesoamerican stone/shell mosaics if people are curious

Albion and Kult of Athena are a couple of well known sword sites. RVA Katana has a few european swords, some of them are made from S5 steel which is an incredibly tough steel that resists bending and breaking several times more than conventional sword steels though the irony is that most S5 blades are being made in China
>>
>>62855079
Appreciate the recommendations. Some of these prices are pretty eye-watering, but I assume you're paying for the hand crafted quality. I'll keep an eye out for S5 steel though, thanks for the advice. I wonder if any of this stuff is legal to actually carry around. In my state you can't conceal a blade longer than 3.5 inches, but you can conceal a handgun. But then I've also seen reenactors walk around with spears and swords and armor.

Just got the White one. It didn't arrive as sharp and the action isn't as smooth as the orange one. I'm going to play around with the tension screw and oil it, maybe that will help. It's much lighter and the blade doesn't really just fall with it's own weight when closing it.

It's probably the best $5 knife you can buy that I know of. But I wouldn't give it out as gifts or recommend it. The orange one I absolutely would gift and recommend.

They are self defense knives specialized in non-lethal takedowns.
If you are in a self-defense situation, but for some reason care very much about the long term survivability of your opponent while also caring very little about their quality of life, then the karambit is the knife for you!
Short reach, blade on the wrong side, terrible at stabbing, complex manual of arms, high self-injury potential. It's a piece of shit.
>>
>>62877349

>>
>>62877381
Addendum: Karambits are illegal in Canada, where I live.
The reason they are illegal is because they are SCARY; they are specifically designed NOT TO KILL PEOPLE, but because it looks weird and some black dude used it in a movie forty goddamn years ago it's a CRIMINAL OFFENSE to own one.

There have been zero crimes committed with a karambit in Canada.

It's a basic bitch carpenters knife made by mora. We had those at our elementary school woodworking classes. An older model, but there really wasn't anything wrong with it. It is cheap, easily bought from pretty much any hardware store, gets the job done and you don't have to worry about being rough with them because they usually buy them by the crate rather than individually. I have one of those in the trunk of my car as part of my car tool kit.

I think it's just called "All purpose knife"? Or an older version of what is called model 511?
If you have worked in construction in anywhere in scandinavia in the past 30 years, you probably have seen these.
Be wary of cheap chinese copies, those are made from chinesium and will break way too easily (pic related).

Hey /kg/ - I live in the woods and use knives for outdoor stuff daily. I like a certain type of knife with a certain type of blade and a certain grip (which I often modify to be narrower in the lower part). I can't really describe the "type", and no one really makes what I'd call a perfect knife, but here's a list of knives which have a lot of the right characteristics:

Bradford 3D Guardian 5.5
Fallkniven S1
*Cold Steel SRK
*Cold Steel SRK-C
*SOG Seal Pup
*Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140
*Mora Companion HD
ESEE-6HM
Demko FreeReign
Reiff Knives F6 Lueku
Peltonen M95 Ranger Puukko
Peltonen M07 Ranger Puukko
Bark River Aurora II
Architect AK 5.5
Architect AK 4.5
White River Ursus 45
River Traders Hudson Bay Roach Belly Knife (5.25" blade)
Benchmade 202 Leuku

(*means I already own and use it)

If you know of a knife that seems like it would fit in this list and it's not made by one of the companies who've already made the list, I'm interested. Someone out there has to be selling the most perfect knife for me.

Alright, Anons, I could really use your guys' help. My fiance has to walk home at night a lot in the city, and she needs a knife for self defense (one time a couple of guys in a van tried to grab her while she was walling and just recently she was attacked by a homeless.)

Do you guys think something like pic related would be good for her or should I look into something with more of a piercing tip like a stiletto? I want it to be functional, yet intimidating and ideally easy for her to get out and open in a hurry.
>>
>>62888778
Cold steel leatherneck mini is concealable but might be too small
>>
>>62888778
defensive spray so she has an option to keep the fuckers away before they get within grabbing range

Then yeah a small fixed blade in a sheath she can keep in one of the accessible pockets or around her neck (I remember a story of a skinny guy defending himself against 3 dudes in the metro using a Neck Bowie)
>>
>>62888778
>>62888945
An 'intimidating' knife is a bad idea unless you also enroll her in knife defence/fighting classes

She's not gonna have a duel with the fuckers, she's gonna cut up their face or arm and then run away, hopefully she won't ever get close enough for that

Small knife is also harder to grab and rip from her weak womanly hands, some guys would take her pulling a knife out as a not insurmountable challenge
>>
>>62888548

Thanks, Anons. I ended up going for a small field knife with a rubberized non-slip handle and a Paracord wrapped everyday carry knife with a much smaller blade that could still potentially have some piercing power that also has finger grooves worked into the handle and a sheath that can be laced with a lanyard and worn around the neck. I particularly liked that one because most of the knives I was seeing had the lanyard hole in the handle and this seemed like it would be easiest to draw in a hurry. I probably would've just gone with the EDC but the field knife was only an extra $3.
>>
>>62888778
OK this question gets asked a lot and it shows the general ignorance of /k/ and 4chan as a whole. The answer is always the same.
Despite what morons on the internet would like you to believe, using a knife for self-defense is generally a bad idea. And if you had ANY training in actual self-defense you would know this. In order to successfully use a knife for self-defense you need a LOT of training and its the kind of training which is actually difficult to find in most parts of the country. Untrained you are more likely to injure yourself than you are to fend off an attacker. You can do it, you need loads of time with one of the few instructors who actually teaches this skill.
Protecting yourself FROM a knife attack is easier as it requires less training and can be learned from many more instructors. Even so, it requires a lot more than one class at the YMCA from a tubby lesbian, which is again where most people go for training even though its severely substandard. If you are asking such a basic question as "what's a good knife for self defense" then you are already WAAAY behind the learning curve. You need to learn so much more than you already do. First you need to spend a fair amount of time learning open-hand defense and when you work your way up to a decent level then you can go ahead and learn about knife defense. But its not for beginners and you are definitely a beginner if you don't even know the right questions to ask.
Same basic problem as firearms: It requires a lot more training than most people realize and that's assuming you have a really good instructor. If you are asking things like "what kind of gun is good for self-defense" you are too green to even be buying a gun. Go to a beginners class where they loan you a firearm and glasses and ear plugs and everything else and teach you the basics. After a couple of those classes you will know about the vast majority of guns which are not suitable for self-defense.
>>
>>62888778
Buy her a fucking gun you retard.
>>
>>62889221
I'm going to have to disagree. Two grown men literally attempted to kidnap her and the only reason she wasn't abducted and murdered is she used her foldable pocket knife to stick the guy pulling her into the van and then ran off. I'm sure there are a lot of ways to defend against a knife attack, but this isn't a rehearsed demonstration where someone can show off a bunch of fancy moves in a controlled environment and most of the people who she's going to have to worry about aren't the type who are likely to have gone through self defense. Most of them are homeless crack heads who are wilding out due to mental health or drug induced psychosis issues or rapists.

That's my two cents at least.
>>
>>62889322
You're right. We're in one of the dumbest areas for gun possession, but I'm going to have to just say fuck it and try to get her one anyways. I'd rather try and deal with whatever bullshit they're going to throw my way than have her out there defenseless.

>>
>>62893491
Switchblades have laws because they got really popular in crime media, especially biker movies and stuff. This was also before one-hand locking folders were easily available so they were also the only knives you could open in a snap. Even back then OTFs were in the minority. Old automatics were overwhelmingly folding stilettos or fat jacknife types with side buttons.
>>
>>62893512
Yeah they're hated because of prejudice not because they are actually more dangerous. The American public is stupid and ignorant. Politicians take advantage of that and pass laws to make them feel better.
Unrelated: Microtechs have good build quality but are awfully expensive. You have to decide if they are worth the money but either way I would not use them for heavy work.
>>
>>62890762
>S&W made OTFs
they are fake otfs
like technically the blade does go out the front so you could call it a otf but it doesnt work like you think it would.
the switch on those releases the blade.
pulling the switch back does not retract the blade.
you have to do other motions to close it which is why they are legal but at the same time not "real" otf
>>
>>62874104
Karambits are utility knives. The curved blade is good for harvesting rice (hawkbill blades are often used for gardening) and the ring lets you tie the bundles of rice together without having to put the knife down. People used it for self defense because it's what they had on them, not for any specific combative purpose.

But then it showed up in movies and video games, which led to people thinking they were super tactical lethal weapons. People pushed back against mall ninjas saying they're effective, which now leads people like this anon >>62877381 to think they are weapons that are complete shit as weapons.

it is easy to attack someone with a knife it is hard to consistently defend against knife attacks. defending yourself against a knife attack is harder than defending yourself against an unarmed assailant because a knife enables you to do much more damage and quicker.

it is easy to stab someone before they can react and it is very hard for a defender to react appropriately to a concealed knife attack. the only training you really need as an attacker is how to draw and stab from concealment quickly. it can be done in under half a second. as a defender you need to constantly be aware and pray your attacker is not going to out-grapple you or that you don't make a mistake. generally it takes people about .2 to .3 seconds to react to anything regardless of what they are reacting to and if they do not expect it the reaction time will definitely be lower than that.

in the context of someone drawing a knife on you within range you will not be able to draw a gun and should not attempt to unless you can break away and get enough distance. open hand is good as is working on fighting in a standing clinch or grappling position. some BJJ or wrestling will give most people a good idea of what to expect outside of direct knife training.

It's wild that people will deride politicians for seeing anything even mildly unorthodox as mystical ninja shit then live on the other side of that exact same coin. Most modern karambits are based on later weaponized designs made to be better at cutting & stabbing people so IDK where you're getting this "non-lethal" jazz from. Did you watch Tony Jaa injure but not kill a man and think you were watching a documentary? If you were around back when Black Ops released you would've been one of the people saying that karambits were specifically designed to pierce the base of the skull because Mason did that to one guy.
