can someone explain to me the concept of throwing knives/axes? do they have to be specifically designed for it, or can you just grab one, feel the balance of it, and throw it just as effectively?

balance absolutely affects how well they can be thrown. hardness matters too. a lot of throwing knives are fairly soft. This is by design so they are less likely to bounce and injure the thrower while they are practicing or throwing for fun. Most throwing knives and axes on the market are mallninja bullshit, OP pic is a perfect example of that.

in ancient warfare they were a skirmishing and distracting tool.
they're a toy in modern life. they've never had much lethality and obviously inferior to a firearm.

can you surprise an attacker and confuse them enough for you to escape? possibly. honestly it is about the same as pocket sand.

>can you just grab one, feel the balance of it, and throw it
Yes.

> just as effectively?
No.

>do they have to be specifically designed for it,
no but certain things throw better than others and theres the whole durability aspect if it will actually survive being thrown multiple times
>or can you just grab one, feel the balance of it, and throw it
sure
>just as effectively?
hell no

It's simple. You order it from Aliexpress thinking it looks cool. In the month it takes to arrive, you progressively grow more disgusted with yourself. Once you open the package, you see the cheap chinesium and you throw it away in disgust and try to forget about the ordeal.

if you didn't throw knives and tomahawks as a disgruntled teenager I don't know what to tell ya, bub
you will never feel the power of COLD STEEL

were they actually used like that? I was under the impression that the whole concept was just invented as a game by bored soldiers and frontiersmen

You can buy well made super safeties from americans for like 80 bucks, i have a few. I also have 3d printed ones from nylon and aliexpress shitter ones 3d printed from stainless, the plastic ones are cool but gimmicky, regardless of service life, the ali ones are dogshit quality and fit worse then the plastic ones, the american manufacture one is pretty good, but is more expensive, 80 bucks for one

I think the Germans did use them. Or maybe only in Total War games.

Late Roman historians claim it was done by various barbarian groups. How reliable the claims are, of course, is up for debate.

The fact that throwing axes were used for thousands of years from antiquity to the renaissance in europe isnt really up for any kind of debate and yes, hurlbats are throwing axes.

Ranged combat in the past was not like guns, it was not like movies, ALL ranged weapons were "skirmishing" or "harassment" weapons that produced a tiny number of casualties.
