>downgrading to 2d thrust vectoring
Why?

I don't know, but the data probably showed something similar to the US' experiments on the F-15: 3D vectoring is probably more trouble than it's worth.

It never had actual 3d thrust vectoring, they just angled the engines towards each other in the opposing directions a bit so that the 2d movement of an individual engine can be used to kinda sorta generate sideways thrust. Their movement is still locked in a single direction much like any other 2d thrust vectored engine and the position of the engines slightly off the direction of thrust in normal flight leads to a loss of force exercised upon the aircraft.

Basically the whole "turn 2d vectored engines into """"""""3d""""""""" comes at the expense of optimal thrust and high speed performance, still doesn't achieve what actual 3d thrust vectoring does and is mostly useful for the most important feature of russian aircraft - low speed airshow maneuvers.

Russia isn't having the best of times with the number 3 after all.
