Does /k/ know anything about durr rifles? I’m going hunting for the first time since I was a teen, and I’d like to get a bolt-action and a scope. My LGS mostly has Mossberg, Ruger, Tikka, Savage, and Stoeger. I can order whatever else too. I’m not that worried about price, most are under $8-900. What I should I be looking for? Also should I get a .308, .30-06, or .270?

I have two cheap Savages and they're both much more accurate than I am. I bought both of them used, because most people round these parts shoot less than 50 rds a year so wear&tear is almost nonexistant.One of them is a .308, which is my deer gun. On a bench rest it will send three bullets through one ragged hole at 100 yds.Since optics quality is more important than gun brand, I have a Leupold on that .308. I got the scope used for $200 from a buddy who went on to more expensive scopes (Swarowski level).Pay less, shoot more.

If .223 isn't deer legal in your state, get the next smallest thing, whether that's 300bo, 7.62x39, 350 legend, 6ARC etc.If you can't get past the idea of shooting deer with a small cartridge, consider a 6.5cm or 7-08 before a .308, they're easier to shoot and do exactly the same thing. But of the cartridges you listed, just go with whatever's cheap on the shelf, which will probably be .308.Cartridges are to deer hunters what lures are to bass fishermen; it really makes no difference, but it's fun to imagine it does.

But it's becoming an endangered species and a bit of a boutique round. Unfortunately. It can be used for moose, but that's definitely an unusual upper-end limit where your shot placement better be very solid or you might just piss the moose off and end up mauled or dead. I use it and advocate it, but the expense is annoying as all fuck because you can't enjoy range day with it out at 500 yards anymore unless you're willing to drop a couple hundred $$s for an afternoon. If you go this route, invest in a reloading setup appropriate to your needs..308 is significantly cheaper and will handle anything from home invaders to medium sized bear to mule deer and smaller. Also, it has a vast variety of loads, so you can custom tailor what round you're shooting to what critter you're shooting. Still a good round for reloading, but not quite as critical as .30-06..270 is a great round, but not all that different from .308, so you might as well get .308 for cost & variety of commercial loads, and probably a few extra rifle options that might not be available in .270.These three rounds are generally a great option if you're shooting at 300 to 600 yards, and .308 & .270 you probably don't want to go more than 400/450 yards.If you're shooting whitetail under 200 yards, consider a levergat in 45-70 or .44 mag or .357 mag. Especially if you expect typically 150 yards & under. Great rounds, and .357/.38 special you can plink all day for reasonable cost. Handloading, again, being a serious option to invest in. Also, extra capacity for home defense.

I hunted Utah & Colorado & nearby for about two decades. Nobody used .270 for elk, and we used to give a lot of shit to guys who showed up with .308 ... which wasn't (entirely) justified, just mostly bantz because everyone else had .30-06, 7mm Rem mag, .300 Win mag, etc.Since you're after short-medium range whitetail, .308 is great & even a bit overpowered. Nice to have if you need to take a bear for some reason, or wild hog. As someone else said, .270 is nearly identical, but shoots slightly flatter & tends to be a better option for another 50 to 100 yards over .308.The other comment about optics is good. Research and invest in fairly high end optics so you can dial it in and hit a beer can every single time at 300 yards. I'm out of practice these days and have a couple injuries that limit me now, but I used to shoot apples about half the size of beer cans out at 350 yards. On a good day I could go 20 for 20 solid hits that would spray applesauce everywhere, on a typical day I could go 9 for 10 or 19 for 20. Plan for lots of practice, both time & money.

Gonna step in for a second OP.Alright lads, help me out here. I'm debating 2 rifles right now. I'm the Marlin 30-30 Anon that posted above. A friend of mine has a cousin that all of a sudden decided he wanted to hunt whitetail deer in Georgia. The guy had no equipment so he asked his cousin, my friend, if he could borrow a gun. My buddy did not want to give him an expensive gun because the guy was kind of a knucklehead. He loaned him a Mosin Nagant that had not been fired in 30 years and gave him a spam can of ammo that was from the 1960's. Cousin Knucklehead parked his pick up truck , dropped the tail gate and sat in the back of the truck while he fiddled with the Mosin Nagant and the spam can of ammo. Yup, before the sun went down he had killed a deer that filled his freezer with venison. People will get crazy about rifles, scopes and ammo when the very basics will be plenty to get a freezer full of venison. They say the Marlin 30-30 with iron sights has killed more white tail deer east of the Mississippi than any other hunting rifle.
Ignore everyone and take a deer like God intended - up close in deep woods with a Remington 760 in 30-06 or savage 99 in 358. Unload every round at the deer as quickly as possible. The first few rounds will create a shooting lane through the branches before you hit it on the run.t. Maine deer hunter

as far as rifles go pretty much anything these days will work. spend money on a scope that isn't a piece of shit and make sure it's zeroed in before you try to shoot anything living with it. also if you ever plan on owning a silencer try to get a model with a threaded barrel.
