Engine reliability has advanced so much that it's no longer as important to have two engines on carrier aircraft, it's still nice to have but it doesn't matter as much as it did in the days of the F-8 crusader and the A-4 Skyhawk.As far as I am aware there has only been one F-35 lost because of an in-flight engine failure, an F-35B lost due to a fuel tube failure in the engine back in 2018.The J-35 having it's thrust distributed over two smaller engines rather than one large one allows it to have a somewhat flatter profile more like the F-22, giving it more lifting body area for the same volume/wetted area.However it also means shallower internal bays, that likely will not accommodate large diameter internal weapons, like 2000lb bombs, JSOW, NSM and future weapons like SIAW/MAKO.
