Basements are a vestige of older design that we've adapted to use as extra living space. Sometimes it's good to have an unfinished space you can do dirty stuff in, I have a workshop I can drill and saw in downstairs. Laundry tub where I can wash off muddy gear and clean my mountain bike. Saw horses where I can sharpen my snowboard and wax it without worrying about damaging the concrete floor. Lots of uses still, but not a good place to store valuable fabric items. I keep all my backpacks and sleeping bags upstairs.
