you shouldn't, that sounds like a bad idea. the likelihood of that getting you into trouble at work is much higher than you actually needing it to defend yourself.

also you should just get your nursing degree, EMT work sucks ass and the people you will work with are all going to be workaholic wannabe antiheros whos got punched by an overdose victime one time and now they just want all drug users to die.

t. salty ex-emt who found a better career.

If you go to a call with an OD if you guys are administering narcan, let the guy that's with you do it and see what he does, or test the waters... look for a stress ball or something sitting around. An illegal, but seemingly widely practiced, thing is to stick the stress ball just barely in their mouth and push just enough narcan to get them to push the ball out of their mouths. Then slam the rest as you dump them in the ER rather than having a combative patient pissed off you ruined their high the entire ride.

All your calls will be old people with geriatric issues, fat people with weight related issues, and drug addicts with drug issues.

>also advice for what to carry if i should
Find out the policy, if you can't just accept you can't or find another job. Even if you can if you end up using it your company will throw you under the bus so have your own insurance for that.

Don't. As an EMT you're expected to be hands-on with confused or drug-affected people. Introducing a gun into that sort of environment is a bad idea, similar to why prison guards don't carry guns inside.

Leatherman raptors look really cool holstered on your belt, but they are ab utter bitch to clean if you get blood, vomit or shit oh them. If you have to upgrade over regular trauma shears, check out x-shears, but honestly you don't even really need those. They are nice though.
At a minimum, keep an extra uniform shirt in your bag. You will get blood, vomit, and or shit on your shirt at some point. If you're going to splurge on anything, Littman makes great stethoscopes, I have an old cardiology iii I got as a graduation present to myself when I finished school, haven't kept up with whatever the latest equivalent version of that is these days, but it's bretty gud.
>general advice
go to nursing school, RT school or PA school as soon as you can. EMS can be a fun job, but it's a pretty shit career. At an absolute minimum pick up your AEMT, that can he done in a month or two with the right program and it'll at least give you a slightly easier time finding work as a tech in the ER if and when you get tired if being on a truck.

Generally decent advice to avoid getting punched by a confused junkie: have someone else do it.

Fucking what? What kinda department do you work for? Intentionally introducing an airway obstruction?
Also for fuck sake oxygenate your patient before you push your narcan for a minute or two. Bag them if you have to. Less hypoxia means less confusion and combativeness and hopefully less of a chance that you or your partner get swung on when they wake up. Sometimes you'll get an over enthusiastic cop or Fire fighter on scene before you. If they give narcan, then tend to slam that shit because they don't really understand what they're doing. If you show up and theres already been multiple doses of narcan given but the patient is still out, start with a blood glucose check and go from there. Mermaw is probably just diabetic not OD'ing.

Yuuup, crazy right? In more than one place a large city. I've started working elsewhere so no clue if that's still done, but it seemed to be a thing everyone "just did" YEARS ago. It was definitely something unspoken as everyone knew it was wrong.

as a firefighter in ATL we don't narc patients if they're breathing adequately, it's anecdotal but every time I've seen the ambulance go full dose IV on someone they come up swinging. Half dose if their respirations aren't quite cutting it, full if they're blue in the face
