Russia is winning but tanks have nothing at all to do with it. In the first 2 years and change Russia’s artillery superiority was winning them the war in a slow grinding advance. In much of 2024 the dynamic has changed to glide-bombs winning in a quicker slow grinding advance. Tanks are brought forward to briefly take pot-shots or moved forward uselessly to be disabled and destroyed.It’s true that the Ukraine war is NOT a representation of modern warfare. But it’s also true that tanks are obsolete in modern war; these two statements are not contradictory. Tanks are even more useless in modern war than they are in the Ukraine war. This was known since the 80s but wasn’t proven until the Gulf War in which the war was won by the USAF and tanks were irrelevant. Ironically the massive degree of overmatch by the US coalition allowed tanks to survive culturally within a cope bubble (ie tanks aren’t useless just the Iraqis were, muh monkey models muh etc). But an equally-matched war in terms of technology and training in Ukraine has stripped away almost all of the copes — the only cope left is muh APS. Unfortunately APS don’t work and EVEN IF THEY DID tanks would still n be useless in face of ATGMs because there’s a LOT more 50-lbs missiles than there are 50+ ton combat vehicles and just because it takes several missiles to defeat a mythical working APS doesn’t the fact that tanks are still obsolete. The battlefield role of heavy support firepower is taken over by indirect fires and air support. Much like modern warships maintain safety via stand-off distance, modern fire support maintains safety by staying out of the line of contact. Armed vehicles in a modern military are just battlefield taxis with fire support only being a minor role; assault is now the job of indirect fires and air support.
