You guys think $3200 for a sanded Gewehr 43 with a polished/refinished receiver and cover is a reasonable ask or should I wait for something better in person and try and haggle down?
Pic rel is the gun

make sure you check the rear of the bolt and receiver for cracks.

if the rifle is in a good shootable condition then that is a fair price.

Did I get scammed when I paid $600 for an Enfield No2 Mk1*? It's been refinished so I couldn't tell that it was an Enfield at first because the markings are all jacked up. Serial number is A7887, so fairly early run, but it's got the features of a *, so I guess it got changed up at some point when it got some repairs?

Yugoslavian guns. The Zastava M70 is in particular a really nice gun to shoot. (Not the AK Zastava M70). (Also I’m not talking about the Czech CZ-70 .32acp pistol, but the Zastava CZ M70 .32acp pistol)

>i'd sy anything under $5k is a deal and 6-7k would be full retail
Thanks guys. Last Gewehr 41 I saw go up for auction hit just over $10k with premium so I'm worried I might not get a chance to win this one given recent auction history.

Just a little retarded. The guy selling it said it was a Webley, and I thought to myself "I don't know a lot about Webleys, but that doesn't seem like a terrible deal. What the hell, I'll buy it and do my research later." Probably not my smartest moment, but oh well

I always thought the little M70s were kind of ugly, but now they’re growing on me and I’m mildly tempted to get one. I really enjoy shooting .32 ACP. The only .32 pistol I have is pic related (also have an Vz61 SBR.) Unfortunately it’s not super reliable. Sometimes it’ll get through a mag just fine. But sometimes I’ll have a FTF. I’ve replaced springs in both the pistol and my 2 mags but it’ll still have issues. It hasn’t bothered me enough to buy another mag and see if that’s the issue or dive deeper into the pistol to find the issue.

They certainly are, there was one on GB that hit $14k a few months back which was insane. Are M1941 Johnsons right around the sane price as a Gewehr 41?

I will kick myself forever for not buying an original one for $900 in 2013 after a shop obtained some old guy's collection of 30 of them and priced them all to sell. He'd bought them all in the late 50's. Dude had a hell of an intuition, he saw other shops turning them into sporters back then and thought "Surely these kraut carbines will be worth something someday, they aren't as common as regular 98's."

to be accurate:
2nd reich was the holy roman empire (of german nation), i.e. austria in the long term. after charlemagne vienna was not always the capital, but berlin never was. berlin didnt even exist as a city at the time.
the displayed guns and flag belong to the german (prusssian) empire. which was partly a part for certain times of the 2nd reich. but never "the" 2nd reich.

I’ve ended up with like 8 32s in my collection. They’re all pretty fun to shoot. The Zastava M70s are funny because they’re a solid steel brick shooting .32 so it seems like there is less recoil than some of my .22s. I’ll carry a Beretta 3032 whenever I need something really small. I still need to repair this Dreyse I bought with a broken frame latch, but I can’t find a replacement anywhere.

Interesting note on the M70. Could make it fun to shoot. With the Czech .32 ACP that has been imported lately, might be time to stock up on more ammo and get some more 32s.

If you can find an 81 that’s definitely the old 32 to get. I carried it for a bit, but now I mostly carry an 80X. You can also convert an 80X to 32acp and it accepts 81 mags. Beretta is supposed to start selling their own conversion kits and 32acp 80Xs at some point too.

I have a question about the sights used on the Swedish RollingBlock. The rifle I brought home yesterday has traces of target sights installed.

There are two threaded holes and a rectangular print. Which roughly correspond to the sights in the attached picture. Does anyone know what type of sights these are?

Current oldest: Belgian(?) mystery meat 20ga SxS percussion gun, estimated date of manufacture 1850s.
Oldest one I've owned: .50ish caliber wheel lock hunting rifle with a Nürnberg gun maker's guild mark, undated but probably made around 1600-1630.
Loved that old wheel lock gun, but I regrettably had to sell it due to a series of unforeseen financial troubles. And yes, I did shoot it a few times.

Chilean mauser, model of 1895, made in 1897 or 1898. In very nice condition, though the rifling is softened. Shoots about 5 or 6 MOA. I don't shoot her much, but I _do_ shoot her. Ejector isn't working; it doesn't kick the brass out when the bolt is pulled back. But I kind of like it that way; lets me pluck the brass off the bolt for eventual re-loading. Rear sight was never updated for the spitzer bullet. When I finally do re-load I want to experiment with the original round nose bullets and see what they do compared to the modern bullets. Interested to see if the round nose will have more rifling engagement in the worn barrel and maybe shoot tighter.

I think my dad has 2 Arisaka’s with the mum, both in 6.5jap. I think they are the same exact type. I can’t remember the type number. They’re from the occupation. He has a Mosin, I think that’s a type 53. It’s from Vietnam and has capture papers. There’s a legit crossbow from the Cambodian tribes that our special forces worked with in Vietnam. For a brief period some of the special forces guys reported to my grandpa. He gave them a can of tobacco and asked them to trade it for him. He had no idea what he would get and was super excited when he got the crossbow. I guess the Vietcong tried to kill my grandpa twice in Vietnam. He had the claymore pellets from one attempt put in acrylic with a little note. I have that but it’s at the other house and not really impressive. Anyway, he scored this gun in the Philippines in WWII, grandpa not dad. It’s pretty cool because 2 world wars and a police action. The 135th ever issued to the Navy, first batch. 1-500 went to the Army.

It didn’t start life like that. It’s 1911 serial 635. It had some kit done to it by an armorer a very long time ago. There’s some info on this and it’s been a while since I researched. I think the forgotten weapons guy may have even done a video on whatever they call this hybrid. It still retains some original features like the thumbnail sights on the slide. I think the trigger may still be original but am unsure. I know the mainspring was updated hence the hump. Someone here will probably know more than me. I went through WWI with the US, then was given to Philippines sometime between WWI and WWII. We don’t shoot it anymore since we learned the very early slides weren’t always hardened correctly. I think this was actually the first pistol I ever shot when I was like 10.

I think that hammer is original. The M1911’s hammer spur changed shape slightly over time, even before the A1. It also still has the early style rear sight and it has a pre-A1 trigger. At some point it got fitted with the arched mainspring and longer grip safety and new grips, but the patent address on the slide is the pre 1914 text so I don’t think this pistol went through one of the complete tear down and rebuilds with a bunch of parts mixed and matched, but rather new parts were refitted only as necessary. It’s a really great heirloom.

Thanks for all the info. This thread got me interested again. I’m gonna do some more research. According to the Colt online serial number search this one was delivered in 1912. Apparently they issued the same serial again in 1918. That’s weird because I looked it up before and I think there was only one entry. I think you are right that it wasn’t totally reworked. My understanding was the US military issued some kind of update kit for the original 1911’s to address whatever issues. So this gun is in some kind of known hybrid condition. I’m gonna look for the forgotten weapons video unless I imagined it. We don’t know exactly where this one was during WWI exactly, but it was given to Philippines and then it went with my grandpa on the Seawolf to Australia. We’ve had it ever since. I’ve been telling my dad to at least rub some grease on it. He knows better than to let languish like that. Here’s an unrelated 1917, can’t even remember if it’s a Colt or Smith and Wesson. It takes the Half Moon clips.

Interesting, I did not know this, thank you. Makes me curious, have you ever entered your serial into the Colt online serial number lookup thing? I’m wondering if it shows up twice like this one did. I wonder if the entries I found for 1912 and 1918 maybe indicated Colt put the kit on this thing.

Possibly a database error from some other Colt-made firearm made in 1918. No doubt that frame and slide are 1912-vintage.
>So this gun is in some kind of known hybrid condition.
It could also be that your grandfather fitted the checkered mainspring housing and extended tang grip safety because it makes the pistol more comfortable to shoot.

Tie between an 1896 spanish action and an 1895 chilean.

Spanish is sporterized but clearly loved and well cared for (except whoever had it before me and stripped it down to a barrelled action before selling), chilean is also sporterized but it kind of sucks.
>>
>>64156670
1896 chilean god damn hard to type the manufacture year when you always say the model year instead

Both ive built up as poverty frankenmausers, chilean almost factory but i saved money with swedish rear sight + handguard, spanish more franken but its getting a nice custom suhl style claw mount for fancy old german scopes
>>
>>64149258
It kinda sucks replacing the ejector, had to do that on my also chilean mauser.

Swedish spring was the cheapest but it isnt the same size, guessing its just manufacturing tolerances? Not sure why it'd be something on purpose.

Also the bluing on the swedish ejector spring is minty and looks totally out of place, i need to rust it or something baka.

Any buyers guides or resources for buying Lee-Enfield's (Mk IIIs or No 4s)?

For the most part the dictator on price for #4s and Mk3s is condition. A decent one of either should run you around $600 in today money so aim for that.
you could dive deeper into manufacturer and other bits but British guns (with a few exceptions) dont suffer the same autism as others

depends what your objective is, if you're wanting to 'collect' and go for rare markings and such, then let the market dictate. if you just want to start shooting surp, then your only concern should be bore quality.

Common and robust guns like Enfields and Mausers are easy to find parts for. You can always look for a cheap bubba'd rifle (as long as it retains original barrel length) for $150-200 and then restore it with replacement furniture and barrel bands down the road when you have more money.

As boomers die out there will be more supply and they will get cheaper.

Based turtle anon.
>>
>>64165020
They’ve been saying that for 10 years and they’ve only gotten more expensive
>>
>>64165020
No Anon.
As boomers die their collections will be inherited by their idiot children and grandchildren who will give them to the police to be destroyed. You should consider all boomer guns to be permanently out of circulation (unless they end up with the Chicago PD). Because unless those guns are separated from their owners while those owners are alive they're just going to end up as scrap metal.
>>
>>64166041
This is only part of it. A lot of boomers are buying up other boomers' piles as if completely unaware of their own mortality. Dead boomer inventory is still in the market, just in the hands of the last ones remaining.
Lots of them do have plans, but it mostly involves their shit going to auction. ungrateful and uninterested grandkids will melt down stuff, but a fair amount will still remain in circulation with an ever aging cadre of vultures.
>>
>>64166521
Even when they have it all its still not enough.
They'll hound young guys who love cutting people a deal by acting like they're just getting into it at their old age or say they only want to collect a few things while they have a room full of guns that got put in safes before Gen Z collectors were ever even born
Let this be a reminder that its fine to cheat boomers for deals when they act like assholes. Its not like they'll care anyways (But you BETTER be nice to the good ones cause they are few and far between)

>>64166521
Met a Boomer once while buying some ammo from him that told me he was going to be buried with his 3 Garands and more if he acquires more. Someone will try to call me a communist, but I think that's both retarded and selfish. It's literally just hoarding a highly desired and limited item to the grave, and as someone with a moderate hoarding problem I can't even imagine being like that, WHILE having grandkids.

Milsurp is half-dead, not solely because of boomers, but they absolutely play their part in it.
>>
>>64166668
>buried with his 3 Garands and more if he acquires more
I really can't understand this level of selfishness and you're right that it's retarded. A number of my guns have immense sentimental value on a level that I don't care if I'm starving to death and cant afford food, I refuse to part with them as long as I'm alive. But when I am gone, I want them to be enjoyed and cared for by someone that will appreciate them, and what they meant to me. I need to hope that my friends kids wind liking guns though, cause if they don't, I don't get to have kids so all my shit winds up at an estate sale or whatever and who the fuck knows who they'll wind up with then, or how well they'll be taken care of.
>>
>>64166640
C-grades are mostly only good for being used as donors for a gun you already have.
>>

Sometimes originally posted by libtard millennials virtue signaling about destroying the evil weapons. It’s obviously extremely biased but it does happen. Most will obviously just be taken to gun stores to get as much money as they ignorantly can.

Sadly Gun-boomer, against my better judgement, which just serves to discourage myself.
I should look at stores but I never feel like I can make the time, and do feel a little awkward showing up to ask and be non-committal to buying anything. Not every store in my area has a good site and I don't think they always update them (potentially to avoid scalpers maybe).

I guess my real question is what an acceptable price range is for a rifle that is a good shooter; yeah I know that answer can vary from rifle to rifle.
Also if there were any neat models that people think are overlooked / underrated. I like learning about interesting things.
>>
>>64169914
Ok a part of this is on you being a little new and socially retarded, but this is 4chan so thats a given. Stop doom scrolling gunbroker. You can entirely fulfill a respectable collection without ever buying off gunbroker, to the extent your general area or state surp market is like and how far youre willing to travel for shows.
To start, yes, go to the local stores get a read on how friendly they are and generally approach with wide eyed enthusiasm around collecting. Write off the stores that give you shit and return to them (if they had good stuff) when youre a little better with the lingo and how to comport yourself.
A lot of this is highly depending on your local market. I am surrounded by tubo based boomer gun stores where we are all buddies and things are great. But this isnt even remotely the case for many anons.

I think, go scout around and come back to the /msg/ thread then and tell us what kind of stores youve found, the vibes and what you saw. Its totally fine to be non-committal if you are at least seeking information/knowledge and it will give you a base idea of what your getting into
>>
>>64169914
Those prices are the ones that don’t sell. Keep that in mind. Retired Boomers spend all day camping these sites so you’re competing with that. You gotta be pretty lucky with the timing.
It’s hard to enter into right now when modern weapons are superior in every way, including price.
My only advice is to trade local. Keep an eye out and keep an open mind.
ask anyone older than you if they have any old military guns they don’t want and keep asking any lgs if they ever have anything. Gun shows have taken second place to pawnfinding the past couple years since my state enacted some more unconstitutional shit

Are there any additional markings on the buttplate aside from the serial number? Depot renumbered bolts and reworked rifles do exist, it's estimated that roughly 1 in 3 rifles went back to a depot at some time during the war as the casualty rate for both rifles and men was pretty high. ideally, go to a online 2nd hand gun sale site, choose gun, contact private seller, transfer money, get gun express shipped to door. paperwork per email. you can do all of this in 2 days, till you have a gun in your hands, without leaving the house.
or just go to a gunstore or pick up 2nd hand gun personally, pay cash, then its just a matter if hours tilll one is armed to the teeth. but then you have to leave the house and interact with the normies. austria.
>>
>>64172306

Well we haven't been disarmed yet despite 50 years of concerted effort at every level of government and media, so yeah I'd say it's been pretty helpful. Yes idiot. Otherwise 1934 and 1968 would have been worse. We’d have national registration and no carry laws at the very least. Having it in the text has single-handedly shielded some Americans in the worst states from being Japan-tier. Stop turning on good things because the bad guys beat it; it’s still good, the bad guys just need to be beat.

Where should I check for cracks in bolt action rifles? Or signs that that rifle is not a good purchase?
>>
>>64184552
it can depend on the rifle or specific histories or usage of said rifle, but generally cracks extending from the receiver tang, poorly fitted bolts or worn lugs, missing springs or screws and as always a shitty pitted bore (or extreme pitting in general)
>>
>>64184552
>Where should I check for cracks in bolt action rifles?
In the wrist behind the tang of the stock. Around the action screws/triggerguard. Around any recoil lugs/crossbolts in the stock. Cracks at the heel and toe of the butt are usually caused by excessively violent drilling of the manual of arms on a hard surface.

Going to a vintage match in a few weeks and wanted to ask you guys which rifle you thought was more accurate to shoot with IRON SIGHTS ONLY
Swedish M41B or Swiss K31 (both with their surplus ammo so M/41 and GP-11)
I’ve heard crazy stories about M96’s wiping competitions in the Nordic countries but my personal experience with the K-31 has been crazy accurate as well
>>
>>64184873
My m/96 is a very accurate rifle even with cheap PPU. I have always shot it better than my K31. I think it’s due to the higher comb on the Swede giving me a rock solid cheek weld.
>>
>>64184873
If by “crazy stories” you mean gold medals yes. It was actually somewhat controversial in early competitions because it was such a tier above every other longgun at the time
>>
>>64184873
K31 + GP11 for the win. The diopter sight version is basically hacking

K31 guy again, was off today so went back to gunstore to see if it was still there. It was, and it is coming home with me on the 9th. Was surprised at how light it was, most other old milsurp rifles I own or have handled were/are considerably heavier.

in your opinion, are (removeable) butt pads for milsurp cringe or just sensible when shooting?

I specify removeable because I don't like the concept of changing the sporter I'm lightly rehabing. Love it to death butt it does kick like a mule. I could also just be a weak (and possibly masochistic) shit; you guys ever get used to it?
>>
>>64189888
On Type 99. But only because the LoP is youth-tier
>>
>>64189888
I wouldn't say their cringe
I bring my milsurps hunting and I've thought about getting some pads for them that way when I set them down I don't dirty up the butt plate and it stays in good shape
>>
>>64189888
As a lanklet ive never found any milsurp I own to kick hard enough to warrant a pad. That said, do whatever feels best for you, its removable so who cares.
>>
>>64189888
i get the feeling that original military loads probably didnt kick as much
when i shoot a mosin with surplus ammo it doesnt kick too bad but when i had a hunting rifle in 30-06 it used to bruise my shoulder after a while
and my 7.7 jap handloads which are perfectly adequate in power dont kick much either despite slugging a 185 grain bullet down range
so really i think its just down to the fact that hunting loads are often the only ammo you can find for these old guns, and they're just not that well suited for shooting at the range
you'll probably risk cracking your stocks at some point until you reload

Tons of sporterized surp come with scopes and due to the sporterization they are typically way cheaper than an original. So really most surp is cheap if thats what youre going for.

check for barrel rub on the handguard/stock. The K31 is notorious for this issue. Over time the wood may warp slightly compromising the very tight tolerances of that area. If the barrel is rubbing your accuracy is going to be shit balls

newfag here, buying myself something for my 20th and SKSs looks hot, any recommendations on where to buy one? Chinese, Yugoslav, Russian, all okay I don’t have a specific preference, just the stock wood furniture
>>
>>64194649
If you don't care, Chinese Type 56 is by far the best value. They made their SKS clone to very high standards and its the cheapest/most available one. Everything else is scalped and price gouged to death.
Make sure you don't get burned by buying a heavily worn one.
>>
>>64194669
How much should a fairly good condition spider be? I see ones on gunbroker for 600 but they look like they’ve been through fucking ‘nam
>>
>>64194691
be patient, I would try to get one for $500 which is completely doable. Gunbroker is often a complete joke. Boomers love to peddle their shitrods for unbelievably high prices but you can still find deals. Otherwise you can find other surplus sites selling SKSs in better condition for that price.
SKSs are pricing to the moon so if you overspend a little to get a super nice one its not the end of the world. I would really try to stay below $600 though for a Chinese one. Especially if you are paying shipping + FFL. SKSs are common enough that you can find them in local stores which could save you $150 on that bullshit if you have the time.

>took all 5 Garands to the range this morning to function test a new reload.
>since IMR4064 is basically unobtainable and looks to be priced at $60 per pound, I decided to find an alternative before I ran out.
>settle on Accurate 2520. It seems fine in a few other calibers I’ve tried it in.
>using 47 grains of powder and Ginex primers, all each cycled a clip without a hang up.
>only issue is that 4 of 5 rifles were experiencing slight “click-bangs” 2-4 times per clip.
>these are brand new reloads, and the powder and primers are each less than 2 years old. And neither have shown signs of any issue in any other caliber.

Anyone have any idea what it could be? I know the Ginex primers are hard, so I was wondering if the Garand firing pin just isn’t hitting them quite hard enough. Or I thought maybe the powder isn’t quite taking up enough volume in the case, so there’s a lot of air in there which could potentially cause a delay in ignition? I don’t know.

I’m going to try CCI 200 primers with the same powder charge and see if it helps. I’ve always used those in the past.

Also a note, pic related is the 1 Garand that didn’t seem to have any click-bangs. I got it from a gun shop and suspect it was a Service Grade, while the other 4 rifles are all field and rack grades purchased within the last 5 years.

Also a guy there had a “super safety” in one of his ARs and let me rip off a few rounds with it. That convinced me to buy one lol.
>>
>>64196735
I'd say that's primer related. I had a similar experience with my M1 using a batch of PPU M2 ball spec made in maybe 2023 or 24, some rounds would go off fine, others wouldn't. Those that didn't go off in my M1, went off fine in my M1917. The same PPU M2 ball I bought in maybe 2022 never had this happen though.
