With the aimpoint I didn't find it to be bad at all. Using irons and actually having to keep a cheekweld wouldn't be as great, but its not nearly as bad as it looks.

Aimpoint Comp M4s. It differs from the regular Comp M4 in that the battery compartment sits low and tucked in. It takes a AA battery where the M5 takes a AAA and is smaller and lighter, but I like the M4s a lot.

Yeah I'd say outside of cobbling together some kind of optics mount these are basically limited in terms of playing with. Still not a bad option if you don't have a G3 but have 700 bucks lying around and don't necessarily care about it running 100% of the time.

>>
>>64613174
The closest you can practically get is an HK91. You should be good to go if you're willing to pay over 2,500 for one. DESU though a pre shittified PTR is more than close enough.
>>64613176
Groovy. I remember my first field exercise when I was a Corpsman with the Marines like half the platoon put together their tarps kind of like that, but much less organized. Good times.
>>
>>64613300
When did ptr get shittified?
>>
>>64613442
Couldn't give you an actual date, but theres a lot of coverage on it. Mostly it boils down to their tooling wearing out and having to switch to different manufacturing processes while simultaneously cutting corners. I'd say the safest bet would be to buy anything made before 2020.
>>
>>64584486
Sorry I missed you last thread. It adds weight for sure. And it's a bitch to install. And I waited for like 2 years on their wait list because they dont produce them regularly. But it was worth it to me because it looks cool and allowed me to move the scout scope to the proper eye relief for me. I can also swap to red dots easily. Overall it's a great upgrade, if you can find one.
>>
What are the PTR variants? I'm seeing like MSG and A3S ... how many are there and what are they?
>>
>>64613514
Thanks for your response
>because they dont produce them regularly.
Well shoot, I thought they didn't produce them at all anymore. I might have just got the VLTOR rail instead of the EBR chassis if I knew that.
>>64613590
Just get a GI, I had an A3S though too. They have a darker finish that almost seems painted on. The GI is a lighter parkerization. The biggest consideration is whether you want a welded rail or the option to get a claw mount later, and also whether you want a polymer or metal trigger pack.
>>
>>64613628
>I thought they didn't produce them at all anymore
They do. Just periodically but if you're on the email list then they do a good job of letting you know when they are about to so you can place an order.

They went from justasgood to okay in the early 2000s and then post 2020 they took another dip. The CA3 Sporters are made by PTR and are total cludge jobs you can't swap out furniture on. But its what we are stuck with if you want a G3 and don't want to shop around for a good parts kit build.

I wouldn't see why not. Its just held in with a single pin. It looks to have the updated collar so you should be able to swap any other foreends you want. My last PTR I owned had an old school wide cocking tube, so I was limited to only being able to use narrow handguards.

Gay ass world.
>>
>>64615962
Sorry to hear that, but no kidding I would have thought HK91s would have been more available to Swedes than PTRs.
>>
>>64615971
Yeah I've found it strange too, but I only ever saw PTR working its way into the market. Maybe they were cheaper, since from what I've gathered, PTR uses surplus furniture (as well as other components?) for their rifles.
>>
>>64615995
>PTR uses surplus furniture (as well as other components?) for their rifles.
Yeah, a lot of it was old Portuguese and HK stuff. The last one I owned (>>64615459) had an HK bolt and barrel, and likely some other original stuff that I didn't account for. Newer PTRs will incorporate less surplus stuff though.
>>
Do any of you guys run LPVOs on your battle rifles? What power are you using?

>>
>>64609585
How do people steal your identity? I thought paranoid folk would have had that shit locked down
>>
>>64616169
Judging by what they did, I expect my information was sourced from a data breach. Probably from AT&T, a rental application or maybe work. They had only the most basic information to apply for shit, while likely not having my actual address or contact information which made it super easy to dispute everything and shut it down. I think in those cases there's not much you can do to prevent it.
>>
>>64612845
I have a buddy in NM with one, it's pretty cool, idk when/how he got it though.
>>
>>64616198
Damn just what I needed. Another nightmare to keep me up at night. Good to hear you got your stuff back in order
>>
>>64616216
The best advice I can give you is register for user accounts with the three major credit bureaus and maybe chex (its like a credit bureau but for checking). The fucker that stole my identity registered with the bureaus first, and so it made it more difficult for me to freeze, file disputes since I had to recover the accounts/file disputes via phone and mail. Experian in particular is a bitch. More importantly though, if you're not planning on taking a new loan or applying for a new credit card any time soon, just put freezes on all of your credit reports, then nobody can make anything in your name.
>>
>>64616227
Thanks for advice anon. Hope you find something nice today:)

>>
>>64616261
Oh jew....
>>
Damn so did I miss the boat on a PTR?
>>
>>64616546
Nah their GI/101 model is still acceptable, if anything is wrong with it, just warranty it, and if you really want just get an older PTR.
>>
>>64616614
I guess, I’m just dooming a little over the apparent drop in quality. Granted I think like most things dropped in quality after 2020, not just PTR, it just stings a little in this case as it was my backup plan in case I got tired of or didn’t like my FAL. The plan was sell it for almost 2k and get a PTR91 and spend the extras on optics and mags
>>
>>64616642
I wouldn't worry about it too much bro. Find a local shop, or a gun show and check out a feel examples. Its really hard to fuck up a roller gun. As long as the rollers are in spec and the receiver isn't malformed you won't have issues. If you really want to go the extra mile, I'm sure you can date the rifles by serial number. I think your plan is still solid. Why didn't you like your FAL?
>>
>>64616681
Oh no the FALs fine, I just had a really hard time deciding between the two so I like to keep my options open in case I did ever want to give the PTR a try
>>
>>64615459
They just look so DAMN good, bros!
>>
>>64616695
Ah ok gotcha.
>>
>>64616642
>just dooming a little
You are.
>>
There's quite a few anons happy with the PTR made C3 sporters which are basically bottom of the barrel parts kits guns, they're not cracking like badly made parts on non combloc state factory AKs or anything its more about them being remade or replicated to specs.
>>
>>64616732
What are the mounting options for optics? I remember hearing the claw mount is a no go for them

That's the biggest reason why I wouldn't get a CA-3, because the claw mount isn't going to work on it. I understand why most shooters would prefer a welded rail, but IMO nothing beats a good claw mount. It looks good, allows you to usually use your irons and a good one will retain its zero fairly well.

The only negative thing I have heard about them is the actual accuracy of the barrel can be a luck of the draw sort of thing with some people getting guns that are pretty much perfectly zeroed and accurate out of the box and others that cant hit paper at 50 yards.

I bought mine in Nov. 2020. At first I thought it may not be that great when it had problems extracting tar sealed ammo. After about 200 rounds the problem didn’t come back and it’s one of my favorite rifles again. This was the middle of the discussion that PTR’s may be going down in quality.
If they really weren’t that bad in 2020, they’re likely fine even today.
>>
>>64617773
That’s good to hear, I guess the issues are a little overblown/fixable. I keep getting FOMO because I think the G3 is the superior rifle but the FAL is better looking so I constantly swing between the two as the one I like more
>>
>>64617791
The only reason I got the G3 and not the FAL is price, particularly with mags. If you’re like me then that will make the G3 the clear winner. I’m sure the FAL is fine but what I know is my A3S works. If yours doesn’t then warranty it.
>>
>>64617798
Yeah mags costing 50 a pop is less than ideal. For me the only issue with the FAL is that it’s inherently less reliable and more finicky. Which doesn’t really matter unless you’re an autist worried about actually using it in “combat”, like me. Besides that it’s a gorgeous gun that’s remarkably soft shooting

My PTR is from 2015: Bristol parts probably assembled at Aynor. Both front and rear sights are canted slightly left. Sent it back to PTR who said it was within acceptable tolerance. Still seems to work out to 200 yards, which is all the farther I can shoot around here. I contemplate removing them entirely and going full AK4C because the rail does seem to be plum.

If it already has a surplus stock and handguard on it there's no reason it shouldn't be able to use any other HK91 handguards or stocks. And if for some reason something like the stock didn't fit you could just remove both of them off the mounting piece that holds the recoil spring and swap them around.
>>

I know one company makes one specifically for the CA-3 that just has a bar that wraps around the rear sight. You could also maybe weld on some material and file it into shape if you know what you're doing.

Not that anon, but as a guy that went to USMC boot in 2006 and was given ALICE gear initially I cannot tell you of the pain and torture that carrying two canteens of water on the belt on my lower back did to me. I can feel the pain to this day, I can feel the blood on the back of my shirt leaking down into my ass. I will never fucking like ALICE gear or alligator clips for as long as a live. Toss it into the fire.

I mean if you live in a state where you can only hunt with specific cartridges you could probably justify an upper for the one shot you take for the season but it's not going to withstand magdumps over time.

Yeah, poor decision skills. I hate when the gifts you give are less meaningful to those who receive them. BUT, a gift given with conditions isn't a gift, it's an obligation. I have tome to the point of never giving gifts that I wouldn't throw away. Cash? Make it small enough to not matter. Carefully selected (anything)? Be able to toss it without regrets. Keepsakes? Better to give a gift card. Asking someone to
>please spend this on your student loan and not on the mary juana
Is not a gift given freely, but a conditional gift. If you want the student loan paid, just flippin' pay it and gift the rcpt!

An AR15 upper in .338Arc for $300 has an appeal, if you want to shoot that particular round, same for .400Legend, which is to your point. But also a cheap entry into a new round. For the large frame, a 22" side charge, .6.5CM has it's own appeal.

What position was the AR fired from? When you're standing your entire body can rock back with the recoil force. If you sit or if you lie prone your body loses that range of motion.

Do any of you guys underload your magazines when you're shooting for groups or sighting in? I think I sometimes get a bit overzealous with a full 20.
>>
>>64625125
I only load five when sighting in, check target, mark target, adjust, load another five, repeat. After that it's having fun from 200 yards and running to target stopping every so often for more shots, then a final bayonet charge. Wtf are you doing?

Nothing crazy. No issues sighting in, just pondering whether loading a few shots at a time will make me focus on them more.

Run drills and go back as far as you can and do it as fast as can until accuracy affected. Add in movement like left or right or going down range if have tactical bay and only shooter. If get good. Do movements with a butt buddy.

Should I save up for a RobArm XCR-M?
or should I get a retro style AR-10?

7.62 NATO shooting is always going to be somewhat novelty "just in case you need heavy punch" round for me, so mating it with a neat retro novelty weapon seems fitting.

On the other hand, as I learn a little more about niche rounds, maybe XCR-M would make sense for other, even more optimized non-5.56 cartridges. Which only the XCR-M would make convenient.
>you can buy a whole extra weapon for the price of extra RobArm barrels.
Could be; haven't compared yet.

Related to that. Does anyone remember the big .308 rifle comparison-tournament a few years ago?
Around the time that C&Rsenal did Project Lightening, some other YT weapons reviewer brought together almost a dozen people with different 308 rifles. They compared the rifles in a scored evaluation. It was multiple videos, probabltly 2x40 minutes. Out in the Southwest.
But I can't find it anymore, seems like it disappeared.
>>
>>64625412
Sounds like you want something retro for the fun factor, are retro style AR-10's readily available? I've never looked into it.
And take it with a grain of salt, but I have an XCR-L and I really love it. Very smooth shooting, great ergos and it just "feels" solid and well built. I think I'll eventually get an XCR-M once I get that BR fever again.
>>
>>64621440
I'd recommend using a belt padding (Blackhawk used to make it, but it's easy to improvise your own) to prevent what >>64621492 writes about.
LBV shoulders do indeed make comfy suspenders for pimped up alice rigs. Get an LBV that's already fucked if possible, no nead to tear apart one in good working condition...

I was going to use the LBV in conjunction with the belt. The magazine pouches on it will fit a single M14 mag.

Went to the surplus store, got an ALICE belt and some M16 pouches to set up with this LBV and other pouches I was sitting on. So far I think it's pretty promising, I'm just going to have to make magpuls for the magazines or put some sort of spacer at the bottom of the pouches. All in all it holds 8 battle rifle mags, or 12 AR mags. It's going to be what I bring when I go home for Christmas, rather than using my plate carrier and it's pouches to hold my mags.

>Went to the surplus store, got an ALICE belt and some M16 pouches
You must have a sweet surp store to come away with that H-harness!
>>
>>64627959
Surplus stores even 10 years ago used to be full of Alice gear. I miss the days of 3 dollar suspenders, 5-10 dollar belts and 3-5 dollar assorted attachments in a giant pile of mothball reeking canvas.
>>
>>64627959
>>64627972
They're pretty good in my area. I already had the LBV, buttpack and pistol stuff.
>>
>>64627991
Whats the total? Last time I bought a rig like that I was doing Airsoft Vietnam larps in the late 2010s and was able to secure an historically relevant old school setup for 70 total. Its still at my Parents, I should grab it and the era appropriate M1 Helmet.
>>
>>64627999
For VN you're gonna want to get M1956 gear for a basic army setup.
For this though, the LBV was like 60 bucks from kommandostore, the belt was $15, the canteen pouches were $10 (each), The M12 holster was ~$20 (I've had it for a long time), the pistol magazine pouches were ~$5, and the M16 magazine pouches were $10 today. The buttpack (an M1956 buttpack) is actually somewhat expensive around $70-100 usually. All in all, ~$200. This was ALICE, but in general a complete M1956 set will set you back more, they use a lot more cotton/canvas, so examples in good condition are getting rare. ALICE, besides being much newer incorporates much more nylon and plastic, so you won't have to deal with rotting cotton and corroded fittings.
>>
>>64628031
M1956 rings a bell, I really need to get that rig now for photos. I remember pouring into getting period correct gear, the Airsoft M16 really makes me want to get a Retro from PSA, if only Retro AR-10s with a fixed carry handle were a thing and affordable.

>if only Retro AR-10s with a fixed carry handle were a thing and affordable
Maybe one day PSA/H&R will. Mine is an SP2 upper I bought from a surplus store I built up and put on with one of the PSA retro lowers.

Oh yeah I forgot to add, as your picture points out, depending on the lower, the lightening cuts will matter (aesthetically). My L1A1 parts are on a forged type 3 receiver. I need to send it to ARS to get L1A1 cuts made in it, because they don't align, and its just one of those things that you can't unnotice..

At first I was leaning towards AR-10 like you suspected.
Since I'd be happy with either gun, but also enjoy introducing weapons to people with limited experience, then I started thinking what others would get more of a kick out of.
That'd be a retro-AR.
RobArm rifles are handsome, sure, but also generic of contemporary design.

But then >>64626801 got me remembering something that seems obvious now. The RobArm would probably be better for hunting. I can use rounds that are more suitable for game, or try different rounds for different distance-environments.

Still not sure which way I'll swing yet, but having these new angles to consider is good.
Whenever I do make my choice, I'll post a screenshot for anons to feel warm & fuzzy.

I will say, I recently got my new PTR back from warranty after a charging handle issue was repaired and I am very happy with it overall. Fit and finish is nice, parkerization is high quality, all G3 magazines fit well (cetmes work but theyre rough), and the rail on top is straight. The warranty work also says they test fired 100rd with no stoppages before shipping it, so take that as you will as an anecdote that not all PTRs are doodoo

I think this should work for an M14. I'm pretty sure the rear sight assemblies between the M14 and M1 Garand are cross compatible.
