While I feel cursed some days to be part of this trade, I have got to run some top of the line equipment, 5 axis integrexes & wire EDM machines(love running wire EDM, also find water jets to be relaxing, manual lathe stuff is the most fun) I have made medical components, industrial printer parts, brake presses, logging equipment, robotics components, defense components & firearms parts. I am competent enough at this point that I could probably churn out a Sten gun or a single action army or many other designs with just a lathe and a mill, the right tooling, materials and technical data packages. From my experiences in Canada, the real money with machining seems to be either working on the oil patch or working up at a mine. If I had to do it all over again, I would have taken classes to get into the medical field sooner, would have studied machining on the side and used the better salary in the health field to buy a lathe or mill for my workshop. As it is now, I only have a clapped out drill press with a X Y axis milling vise.
