The simple, irrefutable facts are that gold and silver have held their value since the dawn of civilization, and they've nearly always also been money. Guns and ammo have never been used as money, as far as I know, and their value isn't nearly as stable as gold and silver historically. If you just want to USE the guns and ammo that's great, but if you want to sell or trade them then you'd be better served by precious metals.
