"Tradeoffs" is a boring answer and not the ocd fight you're after but I think it's a pretty fair one OP.
Magnacut: really well rounded default for the dude who cares to spend some dosh on a knife but also isn't that autistic about em. It's tough, it'll hold an edge ok, and it's got solid corrosion resistance=low maintenance.

Elmax: probably the most direct magna competitor. Honestly I think magna is a little better at everything but elmax is still very good so if you get a chance at a good deal then the value could be higher anyway. I've seen it for cheaper then the difference is worth.

Sleip: more min/maxed. Really really tough, but somewhat higher maintenance and diligence needed.

Maxamet: most min/maxed. Sleip taken to 11. Holds an edge like crazy, but chips pretty easy too and you'll have to be quite diligent about oiling/cleaning to avoid rust. Dunno, sorta seems more like a full on tool steel?

I care about guns more and sometimes get autistic about my blades but sometimes get hyper focused on something else for awhile and they end up sitting awhile so I've mostly settled on the first two due to my own flaws. Better men might do better with sleip.

i like 1095
is it good enough? yes, its capable of doing any realistic knife task.
is it worth it? ehh some people overprice the hell out of it but its still good.
does it rust? yes
either way its fine for anything a normal person is going to do with a knife and when it rusts just clean it its not a big deal.
im sure better steels exists.

ah sorry didnt realize I was talking to a literal mental retard. even my elderly grandmother who cannot remember things from 10 minutes ago notices easy when a kitchen knife rusts if its left wet for a minute vs ones that dont lmao. not exactly a tough observation.

except for you somehow.

No shit retard, you can buy a piece of barstock from Home Depot and grind an edge into it, that doesn't make it "good" steel. Or are you one of those mongoloids who will say "all handguns suck" to defend taking a .22 or .380 innawoods

But you won't be stabbing me because like any normal kommando I've got a gun and know the 21' rule. Also you'd have to leave your basement and not be so fat, I don't actually need to shoot you when I can just lightly jog away and stay ahead of your best wheezing efforts.

But that's not what a decent knife is for even if it could of course be used that way in some imaginary scenario. Knives are first and foremost about utility usage over years and decades not weapons. It's 2026 not 1026.

99% of people dont know how to sharpen and are really bad at it. 99% of the rest of the 1% are just bad at sharpening instead of really bad.

A 440C knife is the superior choice for ease of maintenance. $30 400 grit diamond plate is all you need.

Nta but as a general disliker of any of the 4 series steels except for 440c which can be darn passable and was considered a super steel in the 90s, buck does a strangely good heat treat on 420hc and it just works. Only buck though.

Nah. If you add up the points of the pros and cons of knife steels based upon the 3 main points of judging a knife steel, Edge Retention, Corrosion Resistance, and Strength. both LC200N and Magnacut are high scorers. but this doesnt mean that one is better than the other, just that they are both good at what they are trying to do, but I disagree with LC200N being the best.
>>
>>64999252
No you don't understand.
1000 years under sea water and the magnacut doesn't exist anymore. The rust proof knives will still be good to go. Thats a better knife in everyone's opinion.
>>
>>64999252
The reason I disagree with LC200N being the best is that you trade some strength and miniscule corrosion resistance for better edge retention
From what I know is for folding knives a "good" toughness is 3.5 and above. This is where you will see steels like D2, CTS-204P/20cv/M390, as well as 440c
so any knife steel that is 3.5 or higher on the toughness scale tends to be strong enough for pocket knife steel.
so magnacut is double that. Magnacut is 7, which is double the strength. while LC200N is 8.5, which is 1.5 higher than MagnaCuts rating of 7, the trade off of having a weaker toughness for a greater edge retention is worth it.
Being that MagnaCut goes for 5, and LC200N goes for 3. which is almost double the time inbetween resharpening.
last but not least is that you have corrosion resistance. for that trade off of a good increase in edge retention of 2 points, you will see that you only are .5 off from LC200N's 10 rating on corrosion resistances.
once again these 2 steels do get a total score of 21.5 of being the best steels that have the best attributes of strength, corrosion resistance, and strength.
but I think Magnacut is better despite it being stronger in the edge retention category. Being that LC200N is on the same edge retention scale as AEB-L, 8cr13mov, 14c28n, and AUS-8
which those steels are usually classified as bottom of the barrel entry level steels.
My favorite steels are MagnaCut and Cruwear, and if the steel lives up to the hype possibly MagnaMax. but LC200N......I SLEEP ON.

ok so you minus 1.5 points from the strength category
and you minus .5 points from the corrosion resistance category
you put 2 points into the edge retention category and you have a steel that is close to double the edge retention and somewhere near as strong and ALMOST as corrosion resistant.
and you tell me that the trade off is not worth it.
both of these steels ad up to 21.5 total rating. they do score the highest combining and scoring all the attributes. but you would seriously prefer less edge retention for miniscule corrosion resistance and slight strength increase?

I have been preparing for this kind of conversation for a while. and you didnt think i would have my reference points and diagrams on check to prove that MagnaCut is clearly the superior balanced steel over LC200N?

do you really think you will notice of strength increase of 1.5 points from a 7 to a 8.5?
do you really believe you will notice a better chance of corrosion resistance from 9.5 to 10?
you do?
because i think its better to sacrifice some strength and miniscule corrosion resistance for a 5 rating over a 3 in edge retention. which i think will be the most noticeable attribute change especially since it will wear down quite faster than MagnaCut. saving you more time between resharpening.
but those who know already know that MagnaCut is currently the best "balanced" steel on the market. of coarse their are steels that have a 10 rating on edge retention.......they are brittle as shit.
of coarse there are knives with a 10 rating on corossion resistance......they dull too quick
of coarse their are knives that have a 10 on strength.......they also suffer from dulling too quick.
it just why MagnaCut is so special, despite it being strong enough and corrosion resistant enough, its able to hold an edge better than the ultra strong, ultra corrosion resistant steels that have come before it. the 14c28n, AEB-L, H1, 420HC, 8cr13mov and of coarse.......LC200N.

Would you like me to read you a scripture of our Lord and Savior MagnaMax?
Its suppose to be a edge retention of 7, with a strength of 5 and a corrosion resistance of 9
which should put it at a total score of 21. .5 short of Magnacut. but let me tell you why its going to be good.
remember how i said a 3.5 toughness is "tough enough" for pocket knife steel? yeah well thats for EDC pocket knife steel. a rating of 5 on toughness will put it in s30v and s35vn category of strength. which those steels can commonly be found on folding outdoor steels and are "tough enough" for outdoor knives.
so MagnaCut could possibly be the best current big knife steel for outdoor fixed blades
While Magnamax could be strong enough to be used for outdoor folding knives.
which I believe would be another one of the greatest steels to be produced in the recent past.
BTW mi not a genius, mi merely a messenger who can understand what these real geniuses are doing. I cannot verify that this will be the rating for MagnaMax, but from what i have read its probably going to be around this being that its comparable to k390 in strength and edge retention, while showing very good stainless resistance. so while you may own folding knives in magnacut. its ok to keep them and not feel bad that magnamax is coming out. because they are both steels that have made steels that have come before them obsolete. magnamax will not outdate magnacut, but it will outdate a lot of steels that people think are "the best" ever.

From my experience, M390 and S110V are S tier. They just don't dull.
