>To make a very long story short: his Firing-Pin-Retaining Pin was bent. Being bent, it was putting pressure on his Firing Pin, effectively locking the Firing Pin forward. This caused the rifle to slam-fire when he did the reload. Thankfully, it only happened once and the rifle didn’t continue firing as a runaway gun. In all my years of shooting, I have never seen this before.

question I'm interested in is how'd it get bent? Seems like carbon in the firing pin channel was already binding up the firing pin...simply lubing it would probably have helped prevent

referring to the BCG in general. When I'm done shooting I throw a bunch of lube in the carrier, let it break up the carbon overnight, then pull and wipe down the next morning.
>never ever lube firing pins
Oil's gonna migrate there anyways which is fine as long as its a high quality synthetic. Unless you strip/degrease your firing pin and channel and reinstall it in a clean room every time it's gonna have lube on it

>>65147018
>>65147029
sometimes those fuckers do not want to cooperate (mainly the one in my bootleg adjustable for some reason) but I've run the same BCGs for 12+ years and never bent one.
>>
>>65147045
Enjoy slamfire city retard.
>Oil's gonna migrate there anyways
not really. you don't need to autistically remove and check your firing pin all the time, just DON'T LUBE IT.
Dunking your entire BCG in lube overnight is a bad idea unless you are completely cleaning it. Oil picks up dirt/dust/tiny metal particles and will eventually seize your firing pin up.
You want 0 lube on the firing or in the firing pin channel. This is basic maintenance not just for AR-15's but the majority of non-open bolt firearms.
>>
>>65146957
>how'd it get bent?
Overgassing
Gas blows by the gas rings and impinges on the front flange of the firing pin shoving it back against the retaining pin.
>>
>>65147045
I bend a few every day to stay limber
>>
>>65147045
>Oil's gonna migrate there anyways
It really shouldn't migrate into the bolt and firing pin itself. You should normally be putting oil only on the part of the carrier that will be sliding against the upper.

My current practice is take apart the bcg (but not bolt) for said wipe down after I let the lube do it's thing - separate and wipe the firing pin/cam/cotter pins just not the extractor/ejector. Unless you live in a zero humidity environment, the carbon fouling in your firing pin channel will absorb moisture and oxidize those tiny metal particles. Residual lube on the firing pin is not a concern if your rifle is left long enough for that carbon to rust. I've never had a slamfire despite testing various rifles/bcgs with limited maintenance. Even casual wipedowns done frequently enough catch and solve all this anyways

"some people" as in "this picture I found on reddit"?
Nowhere in US military manuals will you find any mention of lubing the firing pin on an M16/M4. The only reason to do so is if your putting it into long term storage.

You'll find several forum posts telling you to lube all moving parts including the firing pin. You'll also find other forum posts saying to not do this. I lean towards not to do this, but I am explaining to anon the two opinions people have.

Speaking of round counts to determine reliability, how do all of you personally determine when a gun is deemed reliable? Is it a round count, a series of demanding drills, or some combination of both?

I take my PSA out for its annual shoot and put a solid 50 rounds downrange. if it makes it through all 50 I publicly proclaim YEP NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL RELIABLE. then I take it home and put it back in the closet without any cleaning. repeat the next year until it fails the drill (at which point I light up the manufacturer on all forums).

This obviously excludes issues that can be easily traced to bad mags, or bad ammo.
Guns shouldn't need a break-in period, but some (shitty) ones still do. So you may want to keep that in mind if the gun is brand new.

I don't know anon, 200 rounds sounds kinda minimal. Okay but seriously I am guessing it would be something like 17-.221 fireball or some shit. I was always intrigued that CBJ specifically chose .300 blackout as their testing bed for the same AP bullet magic but out of an AR, iirc it had to do with caliber, .223 was too small to make a reliable sabot for it.

Guess I should have said "a few hundred" rather than "a couple hundred".

It's my personal opinion, but if I can shoot 400 or 500 rounds of various types of ammo through a rifle with zero malfunctions, or maybe just one, I consider it more than reliable enough for 99,95% of situations a civilian rifle can be reasonably expected to face.

For actual military rifles that's another story. Those rifles may be expected to face a wider variety of environmental conditions, and possible dirt ingress, but they're tested with a very limited selection of ammo types, and they're expected to be cleaned and lubed to specific standards.
100% reliability under outrageous circumstances can never be guaranteed. Battle hardened door-kickers will tell you that, as well the people who built the rifles those guys use.
The only people who'll tell you that a 30k round count rifle is supposed to work flawlessly with a mix of Bubba's handloads, vietnam-era milsurp ammo, and experimental 5,000 FPS depleted uranium dart sabots, while the rifle is fouled to hell, packed with dust, and operating a temperature range shifting wildly from Antarctic to Saharan, are spineless guntuber shills trying to sell you useless snake oil for $35-ounce.

Recently took a Ruger RXM straight out the box and proceeded to put 1,000 rounds through it without cleaning or lube. It just broke 1500 actually and I might wipe and lube soon. Only issue so far was one failure to lock back on blazer 124gr bc I was riding the slide. I'll take that and call it reliable enough to carry.
>ran a P80 past 3500 rounds without cleaning or lube with zero issues, 95% on blazer 124gr

Rifles get a similar treatment, thousand rounds is kinda the industry standard. I like to try a few different types of ammo and use some old mags with weak springs and see if it locks back. But I don't count malfunctions while testing, like a failure to cycle with heavier buffer weights, for example. I shoot exclusively suppressed so 1k really starts to introduce some good fouling aka testing conditions. Most rifles have been pushed past 1500 without cleaning, sometimes with lube sometimes not. Once they pass that break in/initiation period I give them a good cleaning and put em on a regular maintenance schedule

VLTOR IMOD clubfoot
Magpul CTR
B5 Systems BRAVO
Doublestar ACE Entry stock

These are objectively the best AR15 stocks and any other choice is wrong and a waste of money.
>>
This is actually my favorite magpul stock, but the QD might need some reinforcement.
I like having some meat on the bottom of the stock so I have a place to put my support hand if I'm shooting from a rest.
The B5 is light but it's collapsed on me from bumping the lever.
I also have a B5 Seirra K buffer system that is too heavy to reliably activate my BHO on anything but my overgassed 16"

If I lived in a ban state and didn't already have a submoa gas gun....probably not but still kind of interesting. Barrel length needs chopped in half though

>>65151210
12/13" is the dead zone where you add length without meaningful increases to MV. Even 14.5 is a little underwhelming, but much easier to run an RC2 compared to a full 16"

11.5 and 14.5 (or fine, 16) are best lengths depending on application. If you're shooting past 1000y then 5.56 was probably not the best choice
