Fuck and here I was thinking I could slap a thermal clip on on this shit FUCKING build
>>
>>65437515
Ever since I threw together and started shooting a parts bin C7 build, my other 2 rifles feel twice as heavy as they really are. What I started doing is hanging a 5kg calibrated ivanko plate off the end of my handguards when carrying them through the woods and hiking. I have also tried this with two 5lb weights attached with paracord, however, I have found that they create too much noise when moving and by paying attention to keeping said noise down I inevitably lose focus on the task at hand: shooting stumps. Not to mention the extra 1.02lbs I gain by using the aforementioned ivanko plate. After two weeks of becoming acclimated to the extra weight I removed the weight from my handguards and went back on duty. The results were astounding. Both rifles feel much, much lighter leading to less fatigue over sustained durations of field work, faster target acquisition, and less time spent cutting myself out of briar patches. The only downside that I have noticed is amplified felt recoil when compared to the training setup as described earlier but this isn't really an issue with 556 to begin with. I highly suggest this method for anyone looking to gain a new perspective on their primary weapon in regards to weight management and have emailed my local ranges to volunteer this knowledge in the form of long form in person lectures. So far all but one has agreed to allow me up to 2 hours weekly (in blocks of 30 mins) to disseminate this knowledge to their patrons and local law enforcement. In my expert opinion, the only alternative is lifting more and complaining less.
>>
>>65437553
How do you have it set up? Mine is only 9lb with a full mag, light, and red dot. Velos would add 15.2oz, rearden Charlie mount would ass 2.1oz

Aimpoint in footprint and dimensions, no circledot, and 2x price.
Aside from that...holosun.
That's pretty much it.
The holosun one can be had in titanium for around the same price as the sig, but it's also a Chinese optic with not as good glass.
I picked up an open box demo 4xt (the AA version) for $375.
Honestly...it's really fucking good.
If aimpoint had circledot (I prefer it for quick reaction, inside 100m shooting) and flip caps included I'd probably still pay the extra cost for that, but they don't.
I'm probably going to get another in button cell.

>>
>>65438099
>I hear good things about stuff like the AEMS
I am interested in how the AEMS max is too, but I'd want to see one in person before buying it.
7075 construction, integrated flip caps, decent sized window seems great, I guess it's down to just glass quality, quality control in general, and not wanting to give money to Chinese optics cos on general principle for me.
It's basically 4t money so it would have to stack up same or beat it in my opinion.
>>
>>65438114
I wonder why select-magnification optics like the Elcan aren't as popular compared to LPVOs when I know for a fact nobody dials there LPVO to fucking 2.4x or 5.2x, they use that shit on 1x or 8x or whatever the lowest and highest magnifications
>>
>>65438133
There is no entry level elcan so people can't just buy a cheap one unless they get a fake and most people don't want that, they want to at least pretend this is a serious purchase.

I have one, not the max but the gen 2 of that. Though I haven't actually used it yet to shoot as I've been using my aimpoint primarily. Dot is crisp and my tism has no issues with it.
>>
>>65438133
Generally I agree, there's not much of a need for most of the mag range 90% of the time.
On LPVOs specifically though there are problems with max magnification not allowing you to see target in objective view (not even sure if that's the correct term) if you're trying to punch something at extended range with significant drop, because the optic diameter is so narrow.
IE you might have to back off slightly to get your target even visible through the tube.
This is obviously a very niche concern though as most people aren't trying to punch targets at 600 yards with 300blk subs or whatever, but it is a problem that I have had with a 1-8 before when I WAS trying to do that.
>>
>>65438139
Yeah my point is why aren't there more options like that commercially available
The market is fully of mediocre LPVOs built with budget tier glass and people only ever use them at the extremes, why are there so few prisms (and no dual-mag prisms) and why do the prisms that exist get absolutely bodied by a 30 year old acog
>>
>>65438154
>why aren't there more options like that commercially available
It's probably expensive to get into and nobody wants to spend the money on trying to make an elcan competitor of which there is no guaranteed market.
>>

I don't mean a literal nobody startup trying something new, I mean your Vortex, Primary Arms, etc. that already make prisms
Hell they can even straight up just clone an ACOG and sell it for half the price, same with an Elcan
>>
>>65438172
I get what you're saying, but it would still cost a good chunk of change in R&D to do it because it's not as simple as 'just do it' and it's not like elcan is going to give away their secrets for free.

If they have patents, which the 100% do, not really. You have to figure out how to do it on your own and in a different manner than they are doing it. Otherwise they can just as casually take yours apart, see that it's similar to theirs and lawsuits fly.

Anon do you think machines and custom tooling specific to parts that aren't a simple cap head machine screw just fall out of the sky when you "reverse engineer" something? Manufacturing is extremely complex and everything from how long it takes to complete 1 of 1000 steps in the process of making a product to the logistics of getting it to dealers is baked into the price.

I got a bonus so I bought both a trijicon credo and an acog to see which one I like better. On paper the credo is better in every way. Absolute tack driver to the point of becoming boring once I put that thing on and the 1X is obviously far superior....but the difference in maneuverability between the two is massive. With the LPVO taking it out of the safe and carrying it around feels like a whole ordeal. It feels awkward to sling up and swing around. With the ACOG it feels like it's just part of the rifle, like it was always meant to be there. It becomes a handy maneuverable rifle that I can yank out of my safe and throw in a car trunk if need be, and that's kind of the point of this rifle. I haven't actually shot the thing yet, but as long as it doesn't completely suck (unlikely) I think I'm going to sell the LPVO. If I wanted that much bulk I'd just buy a dedicated scope with more magnification.
>>
>>65438343
Sell it and buy a light and top dot.
>>
>>65438266

>>

Quick question: At what minimum velocity can you expect a 55 grain softpoint to fragment when hitting a human?
I've been wanting to set up a home defense AR and need to know how short I can make the barrel before it prevents my softpoint ammo from fragmenting.

>>
>>65438814
>>65438821
oh wait, you said softpoint. that stuff doesn't really fragment (or at least it isn't supposed to) it just mushrooms and expands. anyway, it's probably around 2000 or something. it's probably different from brand to brand.
>>
>>65438821
>>65438829
Okay. I'm mainly looking at softpoints because of what I've seen them do on feral hogs (nasty stuff!).
If soft points don't fragment, would a 55 grain HPBT or maybe a ballistic tip ammo be better as a home defense option?
I'm also open to consider something higher grain if necessary. I'm currently looking at a 10.5 inch AR, so anything that can reach the velocities I'm looking for would be nice.
Also, saw these on SGammo. Would they be worth considering in my use case?
>>
>>65438836
>If soft points don't fragment, would a 55 grain HPBT or maybe a ballistic tip ammo be better as a home defense option?
you don't need fragmentation if you have expansion, and there's no conclusive evidence on which is better. the military says frag (keep in mind that they're not allowed to use expanding ammo) and the FBI says expansion. me personally, I've seen what softpoint does to something living, and I think it's better than FMJ.
>>
to add to this, ballistic tip acts a lot like softpoint

actually not, "open tip" is referring only to the jacket itself. The lead core remains solid and doesn't open up like a "hollow point" projectile. Open tip is for aerodynamic purposes and also due to the manufacturing process rather than achieving expansion on target.

But putting dumb sperging aside, can any of you people tell me what actually is wrong with my AR (yes the one that's at the gunsmith)? It blows gas backwards like there's a can on it but it's a 20" with no can. Very modest BCM comp that shouldn't affect much gas flow wise. Brass gets thrown to around 4:30 so it's not like overgassed overgassed either. The guy who took my gun there said they could try fitting it with a longer custom gas tube but I have no idea what that would accomplish, I guess if they suspect it's coming from the chamber that could achieve something

He wanted something comparable to the Romeo 4T which is an aimpoint t2 chinese knockoff so I presumed he wanted something with the T2 form factor which is the Crossfire Gen 2 and the Holosun ARO (gen2?)
>>
>>65439579
In that case, I assume as long as the 62gr bullet can reach 2500 FPS, it should still fragment, correct?

Gaped gas port
>>
>>65439596
should be good, generally speaking the heavier the projectile the lower the velocity required to fragment. with typical 55gr requiring the highest velocity and 77gr OTM requiring the lowest.
>>
>>65439610
My guess too, originally I wanted it cut down to 17.5" (don't ask) to mitigate gas that way but I got talked into trying that gas tube trick
>>
>>65439614
The fix is either a new barrel or a new gas tube. If they have a boroscope they should be able to check for erosion inside the barrel at the gas journal to confirm before throwing parts at it. Or remove the fsp and use pin gauges.
>>
>>65439610
>>65439623
he said it's ejecting at 4:30, that's very close to undergassed. Given that he's getting a bunch of gas to the face still that implies all the gas is leaking past, so a BCG problem like another anon said. Why do you think that is related to the gas port or barrel?
>>
>>65439625
He said he tried 4 different bcgs, all 4 cannot be lemons that would be highly unlikely. Maybe the chamber is out of spec and allowing gas to get past?
>>
>>65439634
>Maybe the chamber is out of spec

>>
>>65439685

>seeing more about Pencil barrels online
>second guessing my purchase
Some people are saying that POI shifts are will only show if your going FA while others say it happens after a few mags. Ive only ever shot with govt profiles so that is what Im used too.
Are modern pencils as good with heat as gov't profiles?
Any reccs on 16" chrome line pencil barrels that weight less than 20.5 oz?(My FN Barrel supposedly weights 20.5oz)
>14.5
The laws were I am are complicated so pin and welding a 14.5 isn't an option for me.
Some anons in a previous thread recommended BCM ELW barrels but they weight more than my FN's.
Ive seen some posts on >reddit and the some of the commenters swear by Faxon while some say they were extremely disappointed with them.
I looked into the Faxon pencils profiles and they are only 1 oz lighter.

gas tube is probably too short or slightly sideways inside the upper receiver. Even a slight tilt on the gasblock device on the barrel will tilt the gas tube inside the upper, enough to misalign the gas key on the BCG. Would leak gas rearwards. That or the tip of the gas tube had eroded. Maybe the gas port on the barrel is too oversized as well. Would be mitigated by using an adjustable gas block.
