>>42033302im from a city not a town, sorry to nitpick lol i just want to be clear i didnt grow up on craggy island. there is, or was at the time, only one public gender identity clinic in all of ireland and its in dublin, to get HRT from them you need to be referred by your GP or a psychiatrist and then they assess and gatekeep you. because the west of ireland is more conservative on average you would often have a harder time finding a GP whos even aware the GIC exists let alone knows how to refer you, thats the point im making. i think thats likely changed now because public awareness of trans people has improved in the past ten years, but the waitlist for the GIC is definitely much worse than it was when i was younger and theres no real political will to change things. activists have been trying to get GPs to prescribe HRT for years now but obviously the consultants in the GIC maintain a lot of power from being the only people in public healthcare who are able to prescribe HRT and thus would like to hold onto it. power-hungry consultants blocking change is an issue in irish healthcare across the board though and why we have some of the worst ratings of OECD countries for healthcare access.
