Something I've wondered for a long time is what effect asexuals had on our societies. The way many societies have historically shunned sex and tried to compartmentalize it as just for reproduction sounds a lot like what many asexuals describe doing before they figured things out.
Could asexuals have been responsible for a great deal of religious and legal anti-sex propaganda? And subsequently bolstered their own ranks in a sort of self fulfilling prophecy? (e.g. if you despise sex, it's a lot easier to become a catholic priest and actually practice what you preach)

I could see it. Being asexual would make coping with purity culture much easier, at the very least.
When I questioned my orientation as a teen, my dad was mainly worried about me being gay but when I explained I was thinking I might be asexual, he was actually kinda on board for "purity" reasons
