Most of the audience was boomers, evangelicals, and rednecks who absolutely hate trans people with a burning passion for religious or social reasons. Every trans joke got a laugh and sometimes applause, so the speakers rolled with it. Idk if you've ever done public speaking but you play into what the audience does. This was in Mississippi for reference, so the same speaking circuit probably gives a different speech in Minnesota, California, etc.It also provides a good distraction. Audience gets in a good mood and gets positive emotions from the trans jokes so they won't pressure the candidates to discuss actual substantive topics and issues.
