Most doors to places swing outward rather than in, so it's just the natural way to make that a polite gesture rather than awkward. I always hold the door open for people, regardless of gender or age, if they're standing close enough for it that's how I'll treat them. It'd be pretty hard to hold a door that swings outward open for someone else and go in before them though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I get it if that makes you feel good or whatever, you can believe it all you want, but this is just standard practices. When you open a door for someone who enters or exits first is based entirely on which way the door swings.
