Christmas Edition II: The Reckoning
previous: >>41869583 >>42044782 (Fell off the catalog)

Goal of the thread: Food and cooking is a core pillar of self care. It is self expression, sustenance, social interaction. Enjoy a homecooked meal from fresh ingredients, with others, if you can.
Daily goals can be repeated. Remember to keep score, it can only go up!

>What is this thread for?
Getting better is hard, and sucks. A lot. It does not get easier doing it alone.
Share resources and experiences with combating depression, anxiety, personal issues, achieving or maintaining a healthy weight, etc.
>Why is this thread /lgbt/?
Struggles with mental and physical health are an indisputable part of /lgbt/ life, be it from dysphoria, social pressure, heartbreak, or just unfortunate lifestyle choices.
>Notes to consider:
Please be civil. Shame is your greatest enemy in fighting urges of self abuse (be it sh, drugs, or just self deprecation). Relapsing into bad and unhealthy habits is to be expected, the goal is to increase the average amount of time it takes between relapses. Any improvement is a victory no matter how small. Your worth and right to get better are non-negotiable. And most importantly:
WE ARE NOT THERAPISTS, WE DON'T REPLACE MEDICATION
>Note on advice
Generic advice won't necessarily help you in particular, but for those it does it is an essential foundation to build future progress on, not a miracle cure. Do not underestimate the effects subtle changes to your lifestyle can have. Try first, keep us posted on your progress, build from there.

We are *always* short on self help resources, so if anything was useful to you, let us know!
Since the OP is getting too long I moved all resources into their own post, see below!

Apart from the GOTT, here are a few things you can do _today_ to make your life a little better. Keep a diary and write down every success. Some you may do as often as you please, but write down each one individually! You deserve it! Do not feel pressured to do all, but feel free to select one or two!

- prepare 1 load of laundry
- do 1 load of laundry
- read one page of a book or manga you have been putting off
- cook yourself a meal, or try learn to make a simple dish
- eat a meal
- pick up items on the floor for 5 minutes
- make your bed
- if you have a bad habit, try making it more inconvenient (putting things in hard to reach places for example)
- do the dishes for 3 minutes
- write down one thing you are grateful for (from abstract things to something like a cute image you saw)
- Clean up 1m^2 of your floor (~40x40 in)
- Open your window for 10-20 minutes
- try to exercise for 5 min (walk outdoors, walking stairs, whatever you wish)
- take out the trash
- drink a glass of water
- put one item of trash in the bin
- reach out to an online contact
(perhaps even try arrange spontaneously meeting up with an IRL contact near you!)
- BONUS: Repeat a goal to hit a milestone (1 book chapter rather than a page, the laundry pile, the floor of one room, etc)

That's a really rad project actually! Don't hesitate to keep us posted on your progress! I wouldn't mind hearing your thought process and such, problems and milestones alike! Wishing you all the best for your physio and other goals as well, of course! It's very nice how you have essentially a full road map ahead.
>it feels nice for there to be someone who cares, thank you
My pleasure, Anon!
>>42053781
No biggie, Anon. You can always revisit posts if you wanna, or not. I am just happy to hear from you. We're there for one another, and that's what matters in the end.
>>42049240
I'm glad things worked out in the end, Anon!
>We're not getting my medical financial aid stuff done today after all, we're going to cuddle in bed with low lights and I'm going to work on my journal
Sounds like a lovely plan overall, I hope you two had a cozy weekend. Never hesitate to update us on your situation!
>>42054016
Wonderfully done, Anon! I know that feeling too well, I find it helps a lot to be able to cook for others on top of oneself, I bet you can relate.
>>42060360
Tell me what it is you are tired of hiding, and tell me about the sources of your pain, Anon. We're here to listen!

>bought myself a Hamtaro plush that I wanted really bad as a kid.
Oh my gosh! Believe it or not I actually have one of Hamtaro myself, I really loved the gameboy color and GBA games, too.
>what then?
I understand the regret you feel fucking with you. I genuinely empathize. It sucks thinking about lost time, things that were never in reach and lost opportunities. I don't wanna at any point invalidate those feelings. But I wanna try help you find an answer to that question. What would you value, is the question. Insight into deeper truths, love, the satisfaction of creating things?

I think the other Anon was onto something, there are plenty of jobs where the field of study does not matter as much, but there is a genuine advantage to a degree regardless, secretary comes to mind. The reason? Having successfully finished a degree is not about the subject, but a matter of work ethic, socialization and rigor.
>>42074389
>to what end
Do check what I told the other Anon in the reply above yours. It depends on what you enjoy/value.
>>42066633
I think there is nothing wrong with quitting at all, agreed. Hell, if you end up finding a job that really excites you and needs higher qualifications, it's not like you are barred from reentering. But studying as means to an end has no sense beyond what is required for you to get where you wanna be.

>I'm sorry if this is a mild trauma dump, I'm looking for advice on what to do.
No biggie, I think it's great you're speaking up about what troubles you.
>I wish my dad would control himself when drinking.
>I'm scared that this is because of me.
There is a very important thing for you to keep in mind: Don't blame the sparks for the presence of the powder keg. While it is very understandable to blame potential things he might struggle to cope with (esp in this case where you feel you have agency) the real issue is how he copes (something you can't control directly).
>What do I do?
Given the above, your and his improvement must be treated strictly separately. Starting with his: keep in mind uncontrolled alcohol withdrawal can be lethal. As for why your dad may react aggressively.. he knows he is fucking up, and he might feel treated like an invalid when people try to help him, or simply reminded of his own failings. Alc is also a snooze button for emotional processing. As he sobers up all his feelings will come crushing down on him while his body is gonna makes him feel like dying on top. You will have to tread carefully, and your family will need to work together in this. Making him open up would be important, and weening him off alc in a way not to trigger DT. Depending on how bad it is he might actually be given benzos. Consider reaching out to pros, usually there are help lines for alcoholism and how to deal with it safely in each country. There are some techniques I could offer you, too. VERA (picrel) can help to crowbar people open. But you won't be able to reason with him when he is inebriated, and if he is a violent drunk it will take a serious infringement of his agency to get him to a point of talking to begin with.
As for your own goals, they sound very well structured. You working on yourself will be worth it in the long run, even if your fear for your dad makes you second guess everything. It's human. It's natural.

Guys you should learn about macrobiotics, it's basically traditional east asian medicine and diet

Drinking green tea is good for your liver & weight loss, eating probiotic foods like miso soup or kimchi is good for your gut microbiome (which affects your mental health too), eating whole grains like brown rice & whole wheat bread instead of white is healthier and helps your digestion because it has more fiber, also humans have longer digestive tracts than carnivorous animals who comparatively have shorter digestive tracts, so when we eat meat and animal products it causes bacteria to build up in the digestive tract which causes disease, you dont have to eat any animal products. if you dont eat any dairy at all it even makes your body odor or sweat go away. also indians figured out that different types of food have a certain "nature" or "mode" to them and things like meat and eggs are "tamasic" (the mode of ignorance).

>if you dont eat any dairy at all it even makes your body odor or sweat go away.
correction, i mean it makes your body odor and i think also the odor in your sweat go away. i even heard asians literally have some kind of gene that makes them less or entirely not prone to body odor at all

also for anyone who is interested you should learn about hara breathing. it helps your body / mind calm down and might even help with inflammation. one time when i actually made a serious effort to do it for around maybe 10 minutes it started to feel like i ate a mint but in my whole body. it was really refreshing. I learned it from Yuki Shiina at Zen Kokyu on youtube a few years ago

Financial aid has been applied for, nothing about my income has changed so fingers crossed I get full coverage. If I do I might see about occupational and speech therapy if I can get myself to take time off work.
