I love reading and learning, but I also take great pleasure in being recognized as a reader, or simply in looking smart. I feel awful about this, as it makes me feel like a superficial person. I also unconsciously view learning not as a pursuit of knowledge, but as the acquisition of meta. Recently, I even considered getting a small library for my house, but normally I am opposed to that, as I usually give my books to other people. Sharing knowledge has always seemed better to me than putting it on display as a way of showing how -smart- I am.

Anyways I wanted to ask if you guys are suffering from same issues or what do you think about this?

>pic semi related, it is my next book (slightly commie but I am trying to read writers who I might disagree with)

Damn bro you must be smartest guy here
>>
>>24630524
I'm not like this at all. In fact, I've stopped reading physical books in public because it gives the impression that I'm smart and smug about it, or that I'm being peformative about reading. Now when I get coffee and read I just do it on my phone so others think that I'm doomscrolling.

You don't know him. Have some epistemic humility.
>>
>>24630549
Your situation is kind of similar, but you went the other way. Even when you’re reading, you think about how others see you.

When we were kids, we were implanted with idea that reading itself was this almighty, almost holy thing, something purely good. For me, dressing to impress feels totally fine and normal, but reading in public just to look good somehow feels worse even though that might not be the primary function of the activity. That difference is interesting to me at least.

Part of the reason dante meets all those souls are for cognitive intentional reasons. For dante all those judgements are cognitive conceptions of the human spirit that the love of beatrice or god provides the visionary intentionality where that can be visibly clarified. Also specifically bertran de born is that dante is often a monarchist or some such so that is reason to declaim a radical bertran de born for dante who is an exile. i am not sure whether dante thjnks about army of florence or if it was composed with mercenaries newly given gunpowder given to frequent dispute with pisa anyway that is all extraneous to this discourse which concerns the troubadour betran de born who apparently in the past dante held to be some sort of radical of a stripe or another. Much given flying the red or the black or guild disputes how does guelfs or ghibellines play into this anyways dante thought bertran de born to be some sort of radical whether positively or negatively it cannot be said that much can probably or possibly be asserted about this discussion topic from the past from the age of the renaissance.
>>
>>24630090
dante's entire life was defined and destroyed by factionalism, of course he would be harsh on someone like de born. this is incredibly obvious so i just assumed it was a rhetorical question.

I feel compelled to write a novella. I'm thinking of making the framework of it a Gnostic allegory. I realize this idea may be derided here as cringe due to reactionary contrarianism and a general over-saturation of shallow Gnostic discussion on the internet, but I happen to find the Gnostic myth inspiring. What other stories can be considered Gnostic allegories?

Have any of you read the complete collection of stories within a story? What are the best and worst tales of the Arabian Nights?

Sinbad and The Fisherman and the jenny. The worst tales are all of them because the main problem with this book was that it was boring. I'll rather read 100 new novels (cent nouvelles nouvelles) in French, or Shaving Tyrant Shagpat than suffer the two 'good' translations that are probably largely madeup political devices of the British Empire anyway.

In the footnotes of the unexpurgated Burton, he describes a woman unintentionally giving herself an orgasm through stomach muscle contractions during physical exercise in a public gymnasium. Burton's footnotes are better than the text.

I’ve read 1/3rd of the official Calcutta ii manuscript edition of stories and most of the minor ones are stories of minor Islamic hermits and fables involving animals and stuff like that. There’s the main stories and minor stuff like that. Some “nights” are about half of a page.

the Song of Roland being mentioned reminded me of the Orlando Furioso by Ariosto. There's some great stuff in there for inspiration, though I'm not sure on the quality of the translation.

The majority of adult-child sex is consensual and is reported as a positive experience by the younger participant according to representative surveys.

>>24630104
>a child's body is not designed for sex
Yes they are. Even fetuses have been observed masturbating and experiencing orgasm in utero. Kinsey found that even in a sexually repressive Western context, the majority of people had their first sexual experience, and first experienced orgasm, before puberty. All of the great apes engage in sexual activities before puberty, including humans. As far as penetrative activities go, in some cultures, coitus with pre-pubescent girls is so normalized, it is actually believed that it is a necessary requirement for attaining puberty. A child's body is perfectly capable of engaging in sexual activities; their bodies, much like adult bodies, are designed for sex. Humans are sexual beings from birth.

>Just look at any victim of child sexual assault, who are more likely to be sexual degens, drug addicts, etc, and ask whether it was truly that harmful and corrupting for them..
This is pseudoscientific nonsense, sex is not harmful or corruptive. There is no association between consensual adult-child sex and maladjustment. Secondly, even coerced and non-consenting sexual activities are not strongly associated with maladjustment; studies which use representative samples and control for confounders find that the association between "child sexual abuse" and harm is weak. Sexual activities are not a major cause of harm; this is a medicalization of anti-sexual prejudice.

A crippled mediocre man who sought to play doctor on the world to cure himself. A feeble mind whose only shoddy sanctum was pills and peptalks to slovenly college miscreants who financed his hair transplants.

Father to a whore. Husband to a fraud. He played the jester. His fist up the ass of a Kermit the Frog puppet. Playing it up.

He comes to detest his body which lied broken with his soul in some Russian woodshed they called a hospital. His family had shut him up there. For years? His gasps of agony went unheard. Rude, foreign voices attended him. No one in the world beyond remembered his words or sought his face. He raved of something that onced seemed a reality but now comes as a warped, gnomish dream. A potbellied goblin, smoking a blunt, insisting his assistant pull something up on a blindingly bright screen. Then they spoke of cannibalistic chimps, shadowy dragons, postmodern neomarxists. The burly nurse plunges the catheter up into his bladder.

Now returned to civilization. He grins for the welcome mat. Realizes the shortness of it. How cynically the media touches him, holding him by the edges. He is frought with disgust as he uploads his latest exhibitionist blubbering to his YouTube channel. Something is missing. They have all moved on without him. A word haunts him. Covering it all in a slime that sickens him. Outdated.

Pictures of his daughter prancing around in lobster-themed lingerie are posted on his Instagram feed. He knows a legion of directionless young men in uncleaned rooms are jerking off to his daughter. She takes their money like a whore. And he too feels a tinge in his nearly defunct penis as he gazes feverishly upon the whorish images. Little whore. My little whore, he hoarsely whispers to himself. Fumbling with the cap of the Xanax bottle.

An atheist. A jesuit. A jungian. A masonic celebrity. A superfluous man.

In short, a neoliberal.

Even people like Hobbes said this was the natural order of men without a hugher power (the higher power being the state), and Schopenhauer felt that if we eliminated strife, people would just fight for no reason because its "something to do". Its not a Christian thing at all. We are quarrelsome by nature. All the advances in science does not change who we are. Global atheism doesn't solve this.

The most popular works by Nikolai Gogol or Machado de Assis. Gogol's ukrainian stuff doesn't have that as much as his more popular works though, same for Machado's short stories
Don Quixote does that quite a bit too now that I think about it. Im pretty sure Cervantes actually invented/popularized some spanish swear words in that book

I got it confused with this different but still similar joke from the Clouds of Aristophanes

>Take That, Audience!: In a fourth-wall-breaking moment. While it differs by translation, basically, the personification of Right Argument suggests clean living is important because otherwise you'll have a radish shoved up your ass and people will think you're a sodomite. The personification of Unjust Argument then points out there must be nothing wrong with being a sodomite, pointing to all of the ones in the audience.

I've been reading Marx for the past one year or so and I have to say that, after getting a decent enough understanding, I can't really seem to find existing socialists anywhere who are really Marxists.
'Marxists' today are:
>progressives who are 'intersectional' and get distracted by Palestine/LGBT/other cultural issues
>usually, they're not even good Marxists and are critical theory types, professional managerial 'class', intellectuals, etc.
Or:
>batshit insane tankies
Or:
>Maoists/Third Worldists, usually obsessed with race and calling America Amerika
Are there no orthodox Marxists today out there, anywhere? The closest thing I can think of is perhaps the Neue-Marx-Lekture.

The typical leftoid is the embodiment of Nietzsche last man, they criticize capitalism because still has self actualization unlike communism. The lefty has no urgency over it's political goals, their base is not tied to a concrete individual outside of oppression but as such is easy to co-opt their movement. Ideologies and academics changed focus. Academics shifted their study areas, maybe due to a global goy control network or because their fields became stagnant. Difficult for some people to believe, but ideas can become boring and unfashionable. I am mostly a classical liberal, but I feel like I am one of only five guys in my country.
