Is this the best book about alien first contact?

Arthur C. Clarke wrote some damn fine speculative fiction.

British "middle class" (upper class for most people). You really don't want to look up what everyone else in the sci-fi community was up to at the time.

This. Any book where alien first contact doesn't immediately turn into an existential threat for one or both parties is a children's fairytale. If aliens came to Earth, they wouldn't uplift us like Vulcans, they would at best enslave us and most likely just exterminate us like vermin.

What's Aragorn's tax plan? How does the Shire manage its sewage and toilets? Tolkein was a hack.

It's doesn't even take that long to re read the series. He also could always ask for help, make a diagram... You know, stuff good writers do.

Taxes and shitting are more interesting topics because they are relatable to every day life of the readers.

Brandon Sanderson will do it. He is *extremely effective* at not writing The Doors of Stone; his superlative work ethic has allowed him to consistently not write it every day for the last 14 years. And not only that, but he has a history of making hilarious baiting comments about it, such as saying he's confident Rothfuss will complete it eventually! This is the kind of focus and creativity a candidate needs to bring to the role of official non-completer of the Kingkiller Chronicle. Moreover, Sanderson has a proven track record when it comes to handling the unfinished IP of others. He is the ideal candidate to not write this novel.

Reading the Henry VI plays after Henry V made me mad. Henry VI fucked everything up and did everything wrong. God damn
>>
>>24652657
And if only he had fucked up harder France could have taken over that godforsaken dump off the side of Europe and we‘d be living in a decent world.

Why are some of the greatest works in western canon tragedies? Tragedies almost don't seem to exist in the east.

this is literally the opposite of the truth though, you get that right? you understand that this statement, if said in earnest, would be cartoonishly and pathetically delusional? you're just baiting, right?

You literally don't know what you're talking about.

Westerners have more empathy and can feel a wide range of emotion when reading something. Easterners lack empathy and their literature expresses their general unfeeling autism.

I knew India was retarded but holy shit, I read that whole thing just waiting for the "by the way this is obviously wrong and retarded" but it was played straight from beginning to end.
What an utterly inferior culture.

Well the problems you list also exist in the west too, particularly under the school of Utilitariniasm. Anything which puts actual end result of your actions (“works” in Christianity) over the subject’s intention would have the same conclusion.

>What are Some good book recs for an orthobro Catechumen?

The Orthodox Church by Metropolitan Kallistos Ware: This is often considered the quintessential starting point. It's a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the history, doctrine, and practices of the Orthodox Church.
>>
>>24652421
I would start with the epistles of Paul and then compare what you’ve learned from the word of God to what you read in the words from the fallible minds of the Orthodox Church fathers. I assure you you will find in those church fathers damnable ideas that offend God

Recommended reading charts. (Look here before asking for vague recs)

See pic related if you want a sci-fi variant that was actually fairly popular for what it was but not xboxhueg. Its direct sequel is one of the best written sf I have ever read in my humble opinion.

>>

Pretty much. Initial comments on the question rushed to defend GRRM and shame the person who asked it as if the commentors, and the rest of the internet, haven't been making the same joke for the last 15 years. But this person got tired of the jokes and asked it hoping for a real answer only to get dogpiled on because the question was worded poorly or otherwise lacking in tact. Now you see people unironically saying shit like "George doesn't owe anyone anything" and "Now I hope he never finishes the books" because condoning fat old cunt behavior now earns them likes and upvotes.
>>
>>24652378
>Brandon got asked a question about hard magic systems and how he creates them. George jumped in and went on a ten minute rant about how hard magic systems are dumb, he hates them, no one wants to read them, and you're a questionable author if you write them.
I sympathize with this sentiment, but unfortunately people do actually want to read about them.

will i enjoy against nature if la bas filtered me, /lit/?

>against nature
>down there
>maybe it was the translation
I can't say it's the case here but I don't trust translations that can't get titles right. "Down there" is AI automatic translation level, it should be "Out there".
"Against nature" is plainly bad and makes it sound like it's about gay saunas (which is worse in the anglosphere because the book is already associated with Oscar Wilde). "Against the grain" that has also been used previously is better although far from perfect which is why they changed it (it refers to social expectations but the book is spent in total isolation). Why not just say "Contrary"?
>>
>>24652660
>it should be "Out there"
if you want to be a pedantic little nigga, it should be "there below"
>>
>>24652665
No it certainly wouldn't be. That's even worse than "down there".

>True evil—conscious, calculating evil—does not seek to destroy life, but rather encourage it. True evil—malicious in every action—cheers life on. True evil—defiled in every pursuit—is not, as Max Andrews proposes, maximally selfish, rather full of restraint and accommodating in every way to the needs of men, mice, mushrooms, and microbes. True evil—debased in every motion—promotes, defends, and even admires life in its struggle to persist and self-adorn. True evil—known only to itself—urges life to grow more complex, more bold, more adventurous and more expressive, for only then is it at its most vulnerable, and when it is at its most vulnerable it is pregnant with possibility. Nothing, after all, can be truly lost or truly broken before it is first acquired, held to the bosom, adored, and cherished.

I quite liked wheel of time, don't get the issue others seem to have with it, some of the middle books are great fun. others are a boring slog.

I did read game of thrones but couldn't stomach reading any more of the soiaf books despite all the recommendations.

I just don't get people who think because Sanderson finished WoT, he has to finish all dead author's book series. Even after the mixed feedback on his work on WoT. And Sanderson isn't the young guy in his 30's that he was when he took on WoT, he's pretty deep into writing the Cosmere now. It's no longer his purview to finish someone else's work; nor is George his hero like Robert Jordan was. Have one of gurm's proteges like Ty Franck or Daniel Abraham write it instead.
