It is interesting for two reasons, firstly it is the earliest romance in the Japanese language and secondly, because it is one of the earliest books to feature moon people in it. Only Lucian’s True Story is older.

You know, I am going to answer two short novels (last one is more a short story).

Convenience store woman by Sayaka Murata (doesn't explicitly contain an alien, but the main character thinks like one. I am looking forward to reading her "earthlings" which also doesn't have aliens, but has two cannibal kids who think they are aliens)

"A Shining" by Jon Fosse (this could be interpreted as someone having a spiritual experience but also could be interpreted as an alien encounter. very short and good)
