How are they portrayed? What problems arise when depicting serial killers in fiction? Why do we find them captivating, eg American psycho, silence of the lambs etc

They are captivating because in all of us broods a taste for mindless violence, seldom admitted. We only hate killers when they've been caught, up until that point we are cheering them on
