>>23536057Mine just shipped today, the flaubert letters are excellent if you have any aspirations of writing or like the short travel diversion.

Hardly every post in these threads but here is my stack
>>23536078You posted this in the last thread a couple days ago wym
My Joyce studies stack.Anything I'm missing? (Aside from Ellman's Ulysses on the Liffey which I got digital)
>>23536113Harry Levin
>>23536057I get paranoid about posting what books I read since they're the kind of titles that scream "gangstalk him and make sure he can't actualize his ideals"
>>23536192Why are the far right so paranoid?
>>23536113What's ur end goal for studying Joyce this in depth? Out of curiosity. Sometimes I want to study literature at a deeper level but don't see a point
>>23536192maybe because only faggots would want to fart huff their own book selection on a mongolian oriigami board
>>23536307Interest in it. Not everything needs a utilitarian purpose
>>23536314Werd
>>23536057>Francis SteegmullerInteresting, I just read an excellent biography of Jean Cocteau by him. Probably the best description of the Fin de Siècle I've read along witn The World of Yesterday
>>23536327>Fin de SiècleThe biography technically spans up to the fifties, but you get what I mean
>>23536314based>>23536319kys bugman
>>23536307I'm the one who posted the stack and not >>23536314But yeah, even though I'm entering academia and have been developing some student oriented projects about Joyce, I dont actually need grant bux nor a career, so that I've been studying him this deep out of interest. He's one of the (few?) literary authors whose work is so rich it demands this kind of thorough understanding. The amount of allusions to historical culture and his use of irony when describing ideologies require the reader to be knowleadgable enough to get at his meaning.
>>23536369Can you tell me about the Gifford book, please? Is it written like a commentary or is it more like a gigantic series of footnotes basically? I'm looking more for the former. I've peeped at the amazon page, but it's really unclear to me.
>>23536373Not that girl but it looks like this. They're annotations and you need to have he correct edition because they're paginated.
>>23536384Pretty annoying. I have the Gabler edition which has line numbers at least. So it might match up. I'll hold off for a bit.
>>23536373Yeah it's basically just footnotesAside from the introduction, there's only a brief contextualization at the beginning of each chapter (and it's mostly about the homeric parallels)For commentaries, I suggest the Burgess book on my stack + the Ellman one I mentioned above (Ulysses on the Liffey)The latter is particulary interesting as he makes a lot of original observations and proposes a organizing structure for the chapters. But I think nowadays most scholars of Joyce go with contemporart articles/essays on specific parts of the book, usualy published on The Joyce Quarterly
>>23536389>I have the Gabler editionso you have the fan made edition? why?
>>23536389Also, just rip it from libgen/z-lib
>>23536389It's compatible with Gabler, yes>he annotations have two reference points: the main one will be to the chapter number and line number (within the chapter) of the Gabler edition, published by Vintage in 1984. Line numbers are in the margins, so it's pretty easy to find. Gifford also includes reference in parenthesis to the page and line number of the 1961 Random House edition, which he notes is virtually identical to the Modern Library and Vintage texts. So a reference to 14.1344-55 (421:29-421:42) refers to chapter 14, chapter lines 1344-55 in the Gabler text, and page 421, page lines 29-42 in the Random House text.
>>23536391>>23536400Thanks for the info! I'll check the library so I can cruise through the book if a copy is available. I quite liked Patrick Hastings guide/annotations, but I'm eager to dive into more.>>23536393Cheapest version available when I bought it. I didn't notice anything untoward in it, but it was just a first read. I do plan on buying other versions at some point (I fucking loved the book and have become somewhat obsessed with it).

>>23536057Wow, we got a real MODERNIST over here. Check out this intellectual, he's a real scholarly heavyweight, he's no sentimental romantic, he knows reality. What a master intellect! I bet he's interested in boring baroque playwrights, unlike those crappy romantics like Goethe. Yeah, a heavyweight of the intellectual spheres, a self-aware modern!

>>23537480Who's the publisher for that Infante? Thank you.
>>23537709Not her but that's Marlowe & Co
>>23537960Thank you for respecting my pronouns
>>23537967No problem, girl.
>>23536901I hate arcturusThe spine and pages are stiff
>>23538328Grim. One day you should think about getting some taste.
>>23538339Post library
>>23536901Why do these spines have the same font as cereal boxes? They're ugly

>>23538223How is he?
>>23538201it suits me to be honest, I prefer this over bible paper thin pages that are practically see through. I think these books are printed in the UK, they don't tend to cheap out on thin paper and a weak spine as they just don't sell. The margins are a bit tight, but it's a good font and they're so cheap (these were $3 each)
>>23538402meh, it's a style. The cover art is kind of a simple/pop art type, but way better than. something like wordsworth classics. They are a bit cheap, but I'm actually surprised by the quality overall, they're better than oxford classics or penguin classics in terms of print quality.
>>23537711Very nice, the golden bough is pretty good, I'm guessing that is the abridged edition?
>>23536901They're always going cheap.I've done the "3 for $10" deal in 3 different Canadian cities over 3 years. They always seem to have new titles too, they just print as much english public domain as they can
>>23537480Lowry wrote Under the Volcano not far from where I live.
>>23537711>>23539864>I'm guessing that is the abridged edition?Nah, it looks like all 15 volumes and 5,614 pages are thereJoking aside, I recently finished the Oxford World Classics edition and really enjoyed it. He definitely enjoys somewhat rambling accounts of obscure tribal customs, but that can be interesting and comfy, and works well to support his final thesis (once he gets around to it). I recently picked up The White Goddess by Robert Graves which I'm given to believe builds off of Frazer's work. How recently did you read the Golden Bough, and have you read anything similar which you would recommend?
>>23537480Wtf if you can read English well enough to read the other books why the hell don’t you read Lowry in his original language?
>>23539958>have you read anything similar which you would recommend? The Black Sun by Stanton MarlanThe Uses of Enchantment by Bruno BettelheimFrom Ritual to Romance byJessie Weston
>>23537012Still no email update for me, ordered it 5 days ago. What the actual fuck is going on? I guess I'll call them tomorrow.
>>23540141Where do you live?
>>23540147west coast, I just sent them an email, hopefully they'll figure it out soon. They certainly charged me for them.
>>23540182Did you put the right email address? And you chose physical books right, not ebooks?
>>23540188Yes, apparently they only respond to emails Monday through Friday. I just used the wrong email to ask them, but it doesn't matter since they probably disregarded it since it isn't M-F.
I'm an intern at NYRB. We are having issues with shipping due to the massive amount of orders.
>>23540212Not good enough, motherfucker! Where are my GODDAMN BOOKS?
>>23536707I’m an exec at NYRB. You’re burnt. Deal with it
>>23540216What did you order?
